Oh Time and Death! with certain pace,
Though still unequal, hurrying on,
OVrturniug in your aw ful race.

Not-a! ways in tho storm of war,
^ Nor by the pestilence that sweeps
From the plague-smitten realms afar
Beyond the old and solennrdec[m.
In crowds the good and mighty go,
And to those vast, dim chambers hie,

Dead Ctesars aud dead rriiakespears lie !
Dread Ministers, of Ood! someth, er.

In all Earth’s ocean-severed climes,
'Those—whoso renown you cannot kill!
When all the brightest stars that bunt
At once are banished from their spheres;
Meu' sadly ask, when shall return
Such lustre to the coming years ?
For where is lie (a)—who lived so long,—
\\ ho raised the modern Titan’s ghost,
Ami shewed His fate, in powerful song,
W hose soul for learning’s sake was lost:
'• here he—-r!-n backwards to the birth
Of Time it i’ 1 '. adventurous trod,'
And in the mingled mass of earth,
. Found out tbehandiivork of God ? (b)
Where he—who in the mortal Head (c)
Ordained t i gazq pg.He.TFch, could trace
The soul’s v;nit features,-mat shall tread
The stars, when earth is nothingness?
B here he—who struck old A Iliya's-lyre, (d)
Till round the world its echoes -oil,
And swept, with all a Prophet's fire, -
The diapason cf the soul ?
Where he—who read the mystic lore (e)
Buried, where buried Pharoahs sleep,
And dared presumptuous to cxniore
Secrets four thousand years could keep? 4
Where he—who with a poet’s eye (/)
Of truth on lowly nature g-'zed,
Aud made even sordid Poverty
.Classic,when iu his numbers glaecd?
Where—that old sage so hale and stniif, (g)
The greatest go^'d.who soughtto find:
Who in his garden mused, ’and made
Ail forms of rule, for all -mankind ?
And thou—whom millions far removed (A)
Revered—the hierarch meek and wise,—
Thy ashes sleep, adored, beloved.
Near where thy Wesley's coiliulies,
II e too, the Ilcir of Glory—where
Hath great Napoleon’s scion lied?
Ah! glory goes not to an heir!
Take him, ye noble, vulgar dead 1
But hark! a nation sighs’!’for he, (i’)’
Last of the Brave who perilled a!!
To make an infant empire free,
Obeys the inevitable call! *
They go—and with them is a crowd,
Fur human right who thought mid did ‘
We re*:- to them no' temples proud,
Each hath bis-mental Pyramid.
All earth is now their sepulchre,
Tile Mind, their monument sublime—
Young hi eternal fame they are—-
Such are. your. triumph'acDeaib and Time.

“I send you a Washington Chesnut tr-'e. Tho'
history of ft is this: On tilt; day that tho lat John

and Col. Pickering (1 was present at tho time)

nuts for several years; the other perished. So
ill t the nut which produced the grand parent tree
(if I may so call it) was planted by the Father of
