AGRICULTURE.—Gov. Matey, of.New,
York, in his message to t! e legislature on (lie
2d inst. alludes as follows to the farming inters
est.
“From the consideration of these important
subjects, I pass to one of greater and more gen
eral interest, lying more directly within .the
reach of our legislative act ich, and demanding
from its a particular attention. Agriculture
was undoubtedly the primitive pursuit ol men
in a civilized state of society, and seems to he:
indicated to them by Heaven as their best em
ployment. Vigor of body and purity of mind
are eminently enjoyed by the husbandman.
Without in aning to disparage any class ol men,
or to deny a due measure ol public virtue to aill'
history and experience warrant the assertion,
that the cultivators of the soil have ever been
among the first to clierish, and the Inst to a-
bandon, free institutions, It is not, however;
for this reason that agriculture presents pecul
iar claims for your guardianship. It not only
furnishes occupation to a much greater portion
of our citizens than any other department ot la
bor, but it supplies the materials for all others-.
I L must be regarded as a matter of some s'ur-
priv'/that an employment in 'vhich so great a
number of the human family-are directly enga- ;
gud, to which all look for their daily bread, and
upon, which commerce, manufactures and the
mechanic arts—indeed, all the various pursuit^
of mankind—so necessarily depend, should not
have risen to a still higher consideration than it
5as yet attained, and received from those en
trusted with the power oi legislati n more liber
al aids.
“The numerous agricultural societies organ
ized in the several counties in this state in con
sequence of our legislation, flourished fora sea
son, then languished, and are now generally
dissolved.' The interest-of agriculture was, to
a considerable extent, promoted by tliese socie
ties. The contributions from '.e public treas
ury, distributed principally in premiums, gave
a sudden impulse to agricultural industry, and
induced many laudable efforts among farmers,
not only to excel in their productions, but to
introduce valuable improvements in husbandry,
yet it has been questioned whether the b< nefit-
thus:obtained, wvre of such an extensive anc
abiding character, as might have been..realize:,
by a different application of the funds uenve-
froni the government. Agriculture is a
once, as well as an art: and both must be
tematically cultivated, and widely dissemina
ted, before it would attain a high degree ol im
provement. The general intelligence and in
dividual enterprise of those devoted to the put -
suit, have carried the art as far, per taps,
could be reasonably expected without a bette.

turcs and a flourishing Commerce, demanding
the surplus products of husbandry;, with a pop
