RACE HORSES IN ENGLAND.
The value of race horses in England may bfc
undet stood from the following passage of a re
cent account of tho Doneaste. -nices. •
j “At two years old, Fang was purchased for
•3,300 guineas, with conditions which made tho
. pfico equal to 4,000; at tiie same age, Conrad
t was bought for 2,000 guineas ; and Francesca
i for 1,200 guineas, half.tho Champagne stakes
: aud other provisos fuvora&is to the seller. Mar-
! grave cost 2,500 guineas. Trustee 2,000, and
| Gratis 1,000 guineas! The on di/s are that
Lord Exeter refused 5,OaL) guineas for lielram,
■ before it was decided not to Sind him to tho
| north—that 4,000 were offered for Nitocris,
j 4,000 for Ludlow, and 0,000 for Retainer!—
• And yet people talk of tho badness of the
; times.”
AGE OF IMPROVEMENT,
j Mr. F. Palmer, of Buffalo, N. V., has invent-
; ed a new method of making nails lor shoeing
; Itojrseg atid oxen, for which lie lias obtained a
patent. It is an invention which promises to
1 be c ’ great value to tiie community and to the
j inventor, who is at present the principal pro-
i prietor. Some idea may be formed of its im-
aparilia, ■ portance, from the fact that one man can man-
• ufacture nails, in this way, at least as last as fif-
