THE BLAG OF THE UNITED STATES

A lovelier banner for the brave,
J h:tn that our bleeding fathers won,
And proudly to t he\i- children ga ve :
Not earth a fairer gem can bi-ip**.
Or freedom claim a brighter scroll
Than that to which our free hearts elin-—
I he flag that lights the freeman’s soul!
Its glorious stars in azure shine.
The radiant heraldry of heaven;
Its stripes in heautious order twilit
The emblems ofour Union given.
Ami tyrants with a trembling gaze,
Survey its brr^t'aiiti meteor glare !
Hhflo glorious bennjsjarouud it blaze.
Aud rest iu fadeless sgleudour there!
Look, freemen! on its streaming folds,
As gallantly they range afar,
Where freedom’s bird undaunted holds
.1 he branch of peace and sjfear aud xvar
W iiiln high amid the rolling stars,
With words which .every heart expand;
Within her beak serene she imars ‘
The badge of our united lautlf
Behold, thy star-wrought ensign sweep.
Thy country’s pride, the tyrant's bane ;
Unrivalled outlie fo.'tirfiiig) deep,
Unconquered on the. battle plain,
Along the exalting mountain gale
’Tts borne with wild majestic flow.
trailing meteors-skyward sail.
And leave the dazzeled world belowl
From shore to shore, from hill to biff,
\\ hero freedom's voice hath yethepniteard*
’Tis welcomed with a holy thrill,
Aud oit rebellion’s flame hath stirred.
Around the globe, through every clime
Where commerce wafts or man hath trod,
It floats aloft, unstained w ith crime,
Bui hallowed by heroic blood.
Tho’ France hath crushed her Bourbou
flower,
Aud stezed the bag her valor sought,
Slio holds it as opp -esslou’s dower—
A name is.all ihe boon it brought.
Though Albion Least her cross of blood,
Enerimsofted oti a thqqsaud plains,
Yet freedom’s canso site lialh withstood,
Aud mark’d it with a rcdeemless stain.
But thine, Columbia! thine’s the prize,
To cheer the free and guide the brave,
T.o wave through earth’s remotest skies,
. Aud plant upon oppression’s grave.
Thine is the standard freedom wrought
TV rear above the lion’s form,
M hose flame their martyr’d father’s sought,
To cheer them through the battle’s storm.
Flag of the free! still bear thy way.
Undimm’d through ages yet untold,
O’er earth’s proud realm thy stars display.

IMPROVEMENT IN COFFEE- , .;
Mr. Fessenden—To the lovers of good cof
fee, a simple, pra ticable, and easy method, can
readily be adopted to insure au improvement iu
this delightful beverage.
Every one knows the difficulty of getting a cup'
of good coffee at any of the city or country ho
tels, or on hoard our steam boats. Not one time
ill a hundred, will he succeed, (and by the bye,
if he gets it good at homo he docs well.) 1 have
"for a long time made use of a German prepara
tion (imported I believe only at BalSthoVc.) which
is the best thing I havo yet seen. Fot the want
of a supply of this article. I have been induced
by the rocommendation of a friend, to substitute
prepared carrot, and, much to lay surprise aud
satisfaction, 1 find, with the exception of the pe
culiar sp;cy. .flavor, the carrot‘possesses all the
properties of the German coffee. It improves the
color, smooths the sharp angles, and makes a
rich nutricious and luxurious beverage.
To prepare the carrots for use, as a matter of
course, you will wash them clean, slice them in
pieces the thickness of a dollar, spread and dry
them, and after the bread is withdrawn, place'
them iu the oven, on sheets of tin, aud let them
remain uutil they become slightly brown, when
they are fit for use, and may be bruised in a mor
tar, orused without, as you prefer. But be care
ful not to attempt grinding them unless you wish
to dull your mill.
I have heard of a score of substitutes for cofi’ee,
.rye, com' arid potatoes, the only recommendation-
of which, was economy, and after all it was rye
coffee aud nothing else. This not only embraces
economy, but at the same time, furnishes you
with coffee, and r.right good article too, with tho
addition of cream, which every one should have,
.yon will equal the Delmouico’s.
I make use of two parts of prime old Java cof
fee, (five years old the better,) and one part of
bruised carrot.
. Although a trial of it cannot fail to be approved,
yet being left to the thanagrnient of domestics,
those Who have a full bag to go to, will, to save
iliemsoivos the trouble, neglect this valuable pre '
pnration.
'rite best time to prepare it is late in the fall,
after the flics have taken up thier winter quarters.
All know that carrots arc ntnoug our most
healthy aud nutricious vegetables.
A most valuable article, and which should bo
in every family, is a patent cylindrical coffec-
tonster. \a

Discharging a Load.—A bachelor in Essux

and his lovely dulcinea made her appearance.
After a mutual nod, the following laconic dia

The Peach.—The late Andrew Parmenticr/
of Brooklyn, recommends fish, and also bruis
ed sorrell, to be put around the tree, to prevent
the injury from worms. Dirt heaped up a few
inches has the same effect. He thinks the yel
lows is caused by improper transplanting.
