My subjects were ordered to put on tlie mask,
And tlieu iu hersunshiue exultmgiybask ;
It was done iu «i trice—and so well they agreed.
They acted as though they were Christians indeed.
»Tis thus I have gained the ascendancy o’er
The kingdom* of Europe from -hue unto shore;
From the Mexican gilll to ihe • • ■ er La I’i.ite,
They are governed by law s ol the church and the

Anil homeliest garb hath oft been found,
When tvped and motiided to t■ shape,
To deal such shafts of mischief round
As wisest men can scarce escape.”
gaint Gregory of Nazianzum, who himself
wrote poems, and w;-is the only one el the ..tillers
of the first four centuries who did so, :s thus ren
dered :
Let not thine eyes, whose light forbids

Let not lhox$ hps of man be won,
To brea’ht nihoughuhat w arms thy guile

But like May-buds that fear the sun,
Shut up in rosy silence, ev. r rest,—
Silence that speaks tlie maiden s sweet

But St. Basil comes nearer Little's poems
’Twas by clothing the priest- at the altar with
power,
I’ve w ielded tho sceptre to this very hour—
Nor shall I desist till all peopio shall know
That I govern iu tins w orld as well as below.
In the blood heat of zeal, some fanatics arose,
Who injured their friends by attacking tbeir toes
Even Calvin and Luther have aided my cause,
By blending together religion and laws.
In Geneva, where Calvin erected his throne.
There dire persecution conspicuously shone;
Mv mioiouswere present aud all wide awake.
.My minions were present
When Michael Servetus was burned at the stake.
In England I ouce held the reins of the state,
Aud still there my iullueiiceis Uow very great;
There remains but a sembiauee ol Luther s re
form.
For the whole of the difference cousisted in form.
When sweet bloody Mary ascended the throne,
She was true to her trust like a child ol my ow n ,
My mandates w ere ever the joy ol'her life.
And had 1 been human I d made her my wife.
But Henry the Eighth proved a truant for life,
Embraced therefoun to get rid ot bis wife ;
The Pope then discarded the recreant fool.
Who to Luther’s devices became a mere tool.
In the United States I’m deprived of raj right—
I mast pocket the loss or prepare for a fight;
My priests arc compelled e'en to beg tor their
bread,
Aud scarce one iu ten but is sparingly fed. -
“There shines ?n all pervading grace,
A charm diffused through every part
Of perfect woman’* form and face.
That steaL. like light into mao’s heart.
Her look is to his eyes a beam
Of loveliness tint never sets;
Her voice is to bis heart a dream
Of melody it ne’er forgets :.
Alike in motion or repose.
Awake or slumbering, sure to wic ;
II. r form, a vase lfausp:urent shows
The spirit’s light enshrined within.
Nor charming only when she talks,
Her verysileucespeaks and sliires;
Love gilds her pathway when sho walks,
And lights her couch when she reclines.
Let her’ in short, do what she w ill,
’Tis something for which man must woo
her;
So powerful is that magnet still
\\ iiicli draws all soul’s aud senses to her.
This ancient is afterwards kept iu countenance
by a'paraphrase of modern Barite us, a stanch
Calvinist:
“Now, perhaps, having ta%;d my poetiea,
art.
To indite you this erudite letter,
You’ve enough of the sex, aTer all in jcui
heart.
To hke a few kisses the belter.
And in sooth my dear Anuet, il you rc p.ot-,
ty as wise,
I might offer tho gifts you prefer.
But that Barbara tells me, with love m her
eyes
T must keep all my kisses for her.”
