LOCOMOTIVES,
rah ! hurrah ! tuvny we go,
ithout a spur or goad,
iron coursers snort and blow
Along an irou road.
Your itchiest steeds of flesh and Mood
Are soon with loi! o"er:icne.
But wheels impelled hydro and flood,
Forever may roll on.
Noload, uor length of w ay fatigues,
Our wild unslunt iering team,
A jaunt of a hundred thousand leagues.
Is baby play for steam.
The hills may lift their foreheads high,
The rivers may oppose in vain,
Our srtokv motions soon shall fly
From Mexico to Maine.
Then farewell to domestic jars.
All bullying nonsense done.
A n endless.ctiain of rail-road cars,
Will bind us nil in one.
The goodly dames of former times.
Were doomed qt home to stay,
Or jog o’er dislocating ways,
A dozen miles a clay.
Affairs of moment only led,
Their steps of course to roam,
And comfort too. was born and bred,
They might suppose at home.
But now a feather has force enough,
To send our damsels forth,
Forayatd of bobbin, cr a thimble of snuff.
To tite East, West, South, or North.
The western plough-hoy hastes to hear
The Atl’itttie billows roar,
And Yankee sailors try to steer,
The Pawnee prairies o er.
The Southron sweep comes, in front work,
Where’s Mrs. Soot ? says lie,
Si.-e’sgone for a moment to New York,
But will be home to tea.
O, well, says Darky, then I’il go,
As tlie cars are whirling by,
Fora mouthful of Boston air or so,
And a bite of pumpkin pie.
Could our forefathers quit their shrouds,
How w ould the good folks stare,
To see theirsons in countless crowds,
Driven on by heated air!
To see the stately steam-boat glide,
Eucumbered by no sail.
Regardless of ih’opposing tide,
The fair, or adverse gale.
Yet boast we not, the power of mind,
Must onward, onward go.
Our sous will stare in turn, to find,
How little is nil we huow.
But off!—hurrah ! away we rattle.
On the st ings of the red hot wind,
And scare the fish and kill the cattle,
And leave all care behind.

THE GOLD WATCH.
I have now in my hand a gold watch, which
combines embellishment and utility in happy
proportions, aud is usually considered n very va
luable appendage to :• gentleman. Its hands,
face, chain, and case are of chased aud burnished
gold. Its gold seals sparkle with the ruby, the
topaz, the sapphire, the emerald. 1 open it and
find that tiie works, without which this elegantly
dressed chase would be a mere shell—these hands
motionless—aud these figures without meaning,
are made of brass. I investigate further, and
ask. what is the. spring by which all the works
are put in motion, mc.de of? I am told that it is
steel. I ask what is steel ? The reply is that it
is iron which has undergone a pertain process.
8o then I find that the mainspring, without
which tiie watch would he motionless, and its
hands, figures, and embellishments but toys, is
not of gold, that would not da, hut of irou. I-
rou therefore is the only precious metal; and this
gold watch is an apt emblem of society. Its
hands add figures which toll the hour, resemble
the s; iritsofthe age, to whose movements every
etc is occasionally directed. Its useless, but
sparkling seals, sapphires, rubies, topazes, aud
embellishments, the aristocracy. Its works of
brass; the middle classes, by the iucreasinc pow
er and intelligence of which, tiie master spirits of
the age are moved, and its irou main spring shut
up iu a box, but never thouhgt of, except when
it is disordered, broke, or wants winding up,
symbolizes the 1 borious classes, which are igno
rantly aud superciliously miscalled the lower
classes, which, like the main spring are wound
up by the payment of wages; which classes are
shut up in obscurity, aud though , distantly at
work, am! absolutely necessary to the move
ments of society, as the iron mainspring is to the
gold watch, are never thought of except when
they want their wages, or are in some want or
disorder ofisomc kind or other.

Anecdote of Richard 111.— In the town of Lei-
ceistei Haitland, the house is still shown where
Richard Ill passed the night before the battle .of
Hos worth; & there is a story of him still presc-rv-
I < <1 in tiie corporation records, which illustrates
i the caution and dnrkne>3 of that prince’s charac
ter 1' w as his custom to carry among the Sing-
gage of bis camp a cumberons wooden bed which
t:e pretended was the only bed lie could sleep
in. Here he contrived a secret receptacle for his
treasure, which lay concealed under a weight of
timber. After the fatal day on which Richard foil,
tiie Earl of .Richmond entered Leicester with his
victorious troops ; the friends were pillaged, hut
the bed was neglected by every plunderer as use
less lumber. The owner of the house afterwards
discovering the hoard became suddenly rich wi
thout any visible cause. lie bought lands and at
length arrived at the dignity of being mayor of
l eiceister. Many years afterwards his widow,
who b d been left in great affluence, was murder
ed for her wealth i.y her servant maid who had
been privy to the affair : and at the trial of this
wotnan and her accomplices, the whole transac
tion came to light.
To render good for evil is God like ; to render
good for good is man like ; to render evil foi evil
is beast like : to render evil for good is devil like.

The white Mulberry, besides its admirable
