Dread ful Accident and loss of Life—We lenm
with regret, the fallowing particulars of a mo3t
dreadful occuirence, which resulted in the death of
an amiable young lady. Miss Martha AVilsox.
Oa Wednesday morning last, this young lady
daughter of Mr. Lurn Winso* of Effingham
County with her mother and brother attended
our market; on their return home the same day,
(at night,) ahouf 14 miles from this city they cam
ped out; a fire was kindled, and by it a bed or
a place to rest upon, was pul uear the fire—the
clothiug of which, after some -short'tiinc, was
discovered to be on fire, together with the dress
of the young lady, who immediately jumped, up.
Her mother and brother heiug near by, hastened
to her aid; and attempted to tear the clothing
ir i n h r—in which attempt the hands of Mr.
Wilson were severely burnt. While iu this art.
Miss Wilson being wrapped in flames, extricated
herslf from her brother and ran off. and before ho
could reach her she was ii'cmliy burnt to death.

Tuesday morning at the wooden tenemeut in
Bay lime, just back of Mrs. Battey’s boarding
house. Air Winkler's stable, to the West soon
caught, as also did the carpenter shops of Mr.
Cartier and Air. Gammon and a small building
occupied hy Air. John Audehest, the three on
Bryan slicct ucarlv opposite the Plautcr ’ Bank,
and the whole were quickly consumed.

AVhereas the twenty-ninth section of said act, does
not make it penal with free persons of color to harbor,
conceal or entertain any slave, who may he a runa
way, but merely inflicts a fine on such free persons of
color; for remedy thereof:
See. 1. lie it enacted by the Senate and House of Jlc-
presentitlicesofthe State of Georgia in General Assem
bly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the
same. That from and after the passage of this act. all
free persons of color within this State, who shall har
bour, conceal or entertain a slave or slaves, who shall
be charged or accused of any criminal matter, or shall
be a runaway, shall, upon conviction (in addition to
tho penalty already provided for iu said section) be
subject to the same punishment as slaves are under
said section of the above recited act.
Secy®. And be it further enacted by the authority a-
fortsaid. That any lawful constable having reason to
sns.mct that runaway slaves, or such negroes who
may be charged or accused of any criminal offence,
are harbored, concealed or entertained in the house or |

Section 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of
Representatircs of the state of Georgia in General As
sembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the
same. That from and after tbo first day of January
next, any person or persons having in his, her or their
employment, any slave or free persons of color in any
apothecary shop or druggist store in this ’State, in the
apothecary branch of their husiness, in putting up,
compounding or dispensing purchasing or vending
any drug or drugs, or medicine* of any description,
kind or sort, whatsoever, shall be guiltv of a high mis
demeanor, and on conviction thereof many court hav
ing cognizance of the same, shall be lined' tho sum of
om»hundred dollars for the first offence, and for every
subsequent offence shall be fined in the sum of five
hundred dollars, one half of said fine to go to tho iu-
f inner, and the other half into tho county treasury for
county purposes.

Unjortunnte Occurrence and Loss of Life.—
We regret to state, that on the evening of the 23d
inst. John D. Gray, Esq. the contractor for the
Sr. Joseph Rail Road, was capsized iu a sloop,
while blowing a gale at the East pass or Eastern
entrance of Apalachicola Bay. while on his pas
sage to M. Alarks. to superintend tlio public work
he has there under contract. There were, at the
time of the® ceurrctire, himself and four negroes
in the vessel, one of whom was unfortunately
drowned, and load it not been fort he great ex
ertion of Captain Grecnlcnf. of the ship Supe
rior, now lying at that pass, nil would, undoubt
edly have lic^lust. Too much praise cannot be
awarded him for tli: perseverance and exertion
used at the risk of his own life upon this occa

Experiment on a drunkard.—Ignition of hum
an blood.—A'» experiment wes recently made-in
Berwick. Me by a student of medicine, nu the
blood of a common driiukara. The sot had pro
bably swallowed two gallons of rum, during tho
previous five days, during which time lie hail ta
ken littl- or no food. The student remarked to
him that he was in duuger nf perishing hy spon
taneous combustion, and stated that Ins blood .vas
su much eiicuin >ered by alcohol that it could be
ignited, tlio drunkard asked to be Med. A pint
of blood was lakeu from him. A bowl contain
ing this blood was handed to one of the specta
tors, who ignited a match, and on bringing it in
contact with the contents of the bowl, a confla
gration ensued, burning with a blue flame for the
spare of twenty five or thirty seconds.

Departed this life on the 11 th inst at the residence of
j her father Thos. Swift Ksqr iu Morgan county, Mrs
Harriett T. Furtow, consort of James W. Furlow, of
Monroe county, iu the 19th year of her age. Thus
she was cut off in the bloom of youth, when she was
just beginning to occupy a stand iu society which pro
mised to be one of great brilliancy and usefulness. Her
amiable and heavenly disposition had rendered her
donbly deaf to her husband; her humane and kind
treatment had rendered her beloved by her servants,
and her --(Table deportment had generated an affection-
ute regard in the bosoms of all who knew her. Her
death hus produced a chasm in her tiereaved family
which time cannot fill, and imposed a load upon the
