The Settler.
His echoing axe the settler swung
Auiid.the sea-like solitude.
And rushing, thundering, down were flung
The Titans oftlie wood;
Loud shriek’d the eagle asi he dashed
From out his mossy nest, which crash'd
With its supporting bough,
And the first sunlight, leaping, flash'd
Oil the wolfs below.
Rude was the garb, and strong the frame
Of him who plied his ceaseless toil,
To form that garb, the wild-wood gamo
Contributed their spoil.
Tiie soul, that warm’d that frame disdain’d
Tho tinsel, gaud, and glare, thatreigned
Where men their crowds collected;
The simple for untrimm’d unstain’d,
This forest tamer deck’d.
Tho paths which wound mid gorgeous trees,
The stream whose bright lips kiss’d their
flowers.
The winda that » veil’d their harmonies
Through those sun hiding bovvers,
The temple vast—the green arcade.
The nestling vale—tl e grassy glade,
Dark cave and swampy lair.
These scenes and sounds ma jegty made
Iiis world, his pleasures, there.
His roof adorn’d a pleasant spot,
Mid the black logs green glowd tiie grain,
And herbs, and plants the woods knew not,
Throvein the snn and rain.
The smoke wreath curling o’er the dell,
The low—the bleat—the tinkling bell,
All made a landscape strange,
Which was the living chronicle
Of deeds that wrought the change.
The violet sprnug at Spring’s first tinge,
The rose of summer spread its glow,
The maze hung out its Autumn fringe
Rude Winter brought his snow;
And still the lone one labor’d there,
Ilisshout and whitest woke the air.
As cheerily he plied
His garden spade, or drove his share
Along the hillock’ side.
He mark’d the fire-storm’s blazing flood
Roaring and crackling ou its path.
And scorching earth, and anelting wood,
Beneath its greedy wrath.
He mark’d the rapid whirlwind shoot,
Trampling the pine tree with its foot,
Aud darkening thick the day
With streaming bough and sever’d root,
Hurl’d whizzing on its way.
His gaunt hound yell’d his rifle flash’d,
The grim bear hush’d his savage growl,
In blood and foam the panther gnash’d
His fangs, with dvinghowl;
The fleet deer ceas’d its flying bound,
Its snarlin wolf foe bit the ground,
And with its moaning cry
The beaver san beneath the wound
Its pound-built Venj.ce by.
Humble the lot yet his the race!
When Liberty sent forth her cry,
Who thioug’d iti Conflict’s deadliest place,
To fight—to bleed—to die.
Who cumber’d Bunker’s height of red,
By hope, through weary year- were led,
And witness’d York Town’s sun
Blaze on a Nation’s banner spread,
A Nation's freedom won.

Good Mews for Speculators —It appears, from a
statement made to Congress, a few days since, by the
Secretary of tiie Treasury, in answer to a resolution
of the House of Representatives, that the quantity of
Government lauds surveyed aud offered for sale prior
to the lstof January last, was 169,178,042 acres; and
that the quantity surveyed and remaining unsold, at
the same date, was 119,259,728 acres. Difference,
49,918.314. So it appears that the quantity already
surveyed and subject to private entry for purchase, is
a good deal more than double the whole amount sold
from 1787 to the 1st of January last, a period of 49
years. And, gentlemen, when you have bought this
small patch of 119,259,728 acres now ready at your
hands, thete will remain afew acres more, which, upon
a pinch, can be surveyed and brought into market.—
To more than -100,000,000 acres of such lands, i. e.
lands not yet surveycu. the ludian title has been alrea
dy extinguished. The whole amount of unsold lands
to which the ludian title had been extinguished prior to
the beginning of 1832, was 227,293,884 acres; and
very large additions have been made since, far exceed
ing the amount of sales. The following schedule
shows where the surveyed lands are situated. The
first column expresses the number of acres offered for
sale prior to last January, and the second column the
number of acres remaining unsold.

Fall from Paterson Falls.—A little girl, named Bus-

our lungs with wind and gave us a respectable
cold for which we had to be bled and physicked.
Our reporter, who defies wind and weather,
volunteered to risk a visit to the corse, and says
, the whole affair was beautiful, aud created
much excitement. The Northern boys wore full
of hope and glee—snuffed up the cold air—rat
tled lieuton’s miut drops triumphantly in their
pockets, and squinted knowingly at the draft
hats from the Sou h; while the lads to the side
of Mason and Dixon’s line quiet as }njtubs—pat
ted the smooth coat of their horse—pretended to
look grave—took up every bet offered with great;
coldness—but there v> as a lurking devil iu their
gye that gave assurauce of triumph. Tap went
the drum and off went the animals. Bascomb
a bright cljesnut, and Post Bov a dark bay—both
five year old creatures; Post Boy inside, John
Bascomb laggiug behind at his ease. About
halfway around tlje course, John Bascomb shot
ahead, and came in from forty to fifty yards win
ner. Our Northern boys were a little taken back,
hut rallied their spirits, aud felt sanguine that in
tho second heat Post Iloy w ould win. First heat
run in 7 minutes 49 seconds, the four miles.
In a half h< ur. both horses started in fine stylo
aud kept neck and ueck, nearly the w r hole heat;
it was evident, however, that the rider of tho
Southern horse possessed most skill, and Post Boy
was pushed with great Ibrce. John Bascomb
trailing along wiih ease, aud came out winner ;
the last heat being run in seven minutes aud fifty
one and a half seconds.—Both nags are of fiuo
speed aiid bottom. Post Boy the strongest in
the loins, aud probably as swift as John Bascomb
hut there is much iu training and riding. Ilad
Post Boy won the second heat, we think his bot
tom would have iusured a victory.
