At Athens Tu.-s.lay while young Jolm
Barnes, a university student and a son of
Congressman Barn**, of Augusta, was
walking with a friend on College avonfie, in
the dire. *tion of the p>st offire. a negro man
insisted upon going between Barnes nnd his
friend, who were walking arm-in-arm.
They naturally resented this and ordered the
negro to go around, whereupon lie became
impudent and insulting to th*- young men.
Mr. liana - quietiv knocked the fellow down
nnd passed on. The affair was really laugh
able, owing to the is 1 manner in which Mr.
Barnes laid the" negro nut and liis apparent
indifference to the matter.

the work which the company will push is
the erection of three splendid stores on the
well-known D'Antignac property, on Broad,

At Athens after much delay the contract
for th -new Oiira has been finally
awarded to McGinty & Cos. It is not known
what the figures ai-c, though considerably
above sjo.inx) for the walls, root* and the
Hour. The interior of the hall will lie decorated
and tiiii-h yd bv contractors yet to be selected.
McGinty & ('o. have also received the con
tract to build a three-storv brick, iron front
store on the corner of Clayton and Jackson
streets for Dr. TV. A. Carlton. This house
will adjoin the op.-ra house stores. The va
cant lot between the opera house and Craw
ford’s drug store was purchased Tuesday
from Ferdinand Phinizvby McGinty & Cos",
who will erect a three-storv brick, with
iron front. It will lie seen that the whole
block on Ciavtor. street, opposite the post
office will be built up with tnree-story brick,
iron front stores. The contract calls for the
oomph tion of the work by Sept. 1. Athens
will thus, in one place, get over $50,000
worth of improvements.
The rumor about the students at Athens
boycott iig a certain drug store, while not
unfounded, hi basis! on a simple misunder
standing. For several days past the grand
jury liailifts have Leu serving subpoenas
upon students in order to get their testimony
about certain matters the jury was investi
gating. The students uatumlly were dodg
ing the ba/iiff and some of them were hiding
out to esvi.pe summons. One of the bailiffs
was a n-w hand, who did not know the
students whose preseuoe the jurv wanted,
and when he stepped into the store of G. TV.
Rush, bn College avenue, ami inci
dentally asked who a rertain student stand
ing on the other side of the street was,
Mr. Ruth, not knowing who he was. gave
his name. The Iwiliff went across and
served the subpeeua on the young man. who
denied '“being minted so-and-so. ■•But," said
the hajliff. "I know you aie. for Mr. Rush
across the * -eet told me so." So the cat got
out of th ■ Ixig, and a boycott was on lend
by tfie studi-ntß against the ilrug store of
Rush. If the young men had investigated
the jhat'er they would have seen that the
information was given unintentionally. It
is said, however, that the real secret of the
trouble dates back to the refusal of Mr.
Rush, the owner of the drug store, to give
certain young men credit: in fact, this is
.the cause of the whole trouble, in Rush’s
opinion. The boycott is not being very
' strictly enforced.

articles known to have lieen marked were
the solid silver spoons, marked "TV." The
extent of the robbery is about SSOO. No

that it was the work of someone well ac

FIRE FIGHTS FIRE.
Ten Miles of Country Swept Over in

From Ihf ,-i thru* [Ga. j Funner- ll*cgr/i rutin.
Hon. R. K. Reaves returned yesterday
from High Shoals, and gives us the follow
ing additional information in regard to the
tire that ravaged the country around and
above High Shoals Saturday:
It seems that the tire broke out in the
neighborhood of Carith-rs' store, and as
everything was as dry as a tinder box and a
stiff breeze blowing, th* flames went at the
s l*’fi of a race horse, gathering fresh force
with their advance. They swept everything
in their uatu —fences, forests, fleltjs aiih

of the fire there • was a perfect
hail of burning fagots, scattering the
flames in every direction. It was im
iiotsible to approach near enough the fire to
attempt its extinguishment, for it would
have Lieu at the peril of one’s lift-. Black
clouds of smoke hovered over the fare of the
land, making it dark at noondav and add
ing to the terror and gloom. In the track
ot tliis conflagration was the most .Jismal
sight imaginable. Nothing that could L
