The week on the Stock Exchange opened quiet
nnd rather listless, in which half a dozen stocks
monopolized the interest, and two made the
temper of speculation at different periods of the
daj'. The announcement of a proposed extra
issue of stock by the St. Paul compmy, coming
after the unfavorable bank statement of Satur
day, created a marked depression in grangers,
in which the general list sympathized to a lim
ited extent. Later ill the day there was a sud
den spurt in Western Union, based upon wide
spread rumors that a dividend would shortly be
declared upon the stock, which scheme is said
to Is- favored by several of the most influential
stockholders. Then the feeling became notice
ably firmer throughout the list. There was an
extensive short covering in Pacific Mail through
out the afternoon, and the stock made ama
terial advance. The improvement in the market
was also aided late in lue day by a reduction in
the rates of sterling exchange. The opening
was moderately active and weak, first prices
showing declines from Saturday s final figures
extending to % per cent. Fort Worth and Den
ver ami Wheeling and Igike Erie showed consid
erable strength. After the first hour a firmer
tone was imparted tothe trading, notwithstand

Western Union suddenly sprang Into promi
nence after 2 o'clock, displaying unusual
strength. The general list became firm and
fractional gabies were recorded. Pacific Mull
afterward becoming the leading strong stock.
Prices shaded off a little in the lost hour, but
the close was steady nnd generally near she best
prices of the day. Total sal.-* 266,000 shares.

Green <fc Co.’s report on cotton futuressavs:
“It has been a rather slow and more or less
heavy market all day, with buyers getting
mostly the advantage on the old crop. Foreign
advices were favorable, and there was nothing
brought out that could be considered particu
larly depressing, but the absence of buying
orders seemed to discourage bullish efforts and
induce considerable selling out on near options,
the supply being increased by orders from New
Orleans. The raid was the most severe on Au
gust, which, alter a small gain to commence
with, dropped 10@.ll points from the highest,
and shaded Saturday evening some 7 points,
with indications _that some short selling took
place under the influence of weakness. The new
crop was offered carefully, attracted some at
tention and made only slight shrinkage.”
