A number of different causes conspired this
morning to create a more confident feeling upon
stocks, and the market was firm almost the en
tire day. a few slight setbacks being occasioned
by efforts of various room traders. The de
cision of the Interstate Commerce Commission
had a materially reassuring effect. There were
numerous points afloat in regard to Western
Union, the tenor of most of them being that the
opposition was shortly to be removed. The in
creased supply of hills of different kiuds caused
another drop iu sterling, and considerable talk
was heard of imports of gold. London was a
free buyer, which encouraged local operators to
cover their shorts. The entire list participated
in the advance, although fluctuations in all but
a few were narrow. The opening was firm to
strong at advances over last evening’s close ex
tending to % per cent There was some irregu
larity early, but the market was only fairly
steady until toward noon, when, under the lead
of coalers, the market advanced. Business
showed a gradual falling off, hut prices con
tinued firm until 1 o'clock, when a sagging ten
dency was developed. The close was steady at
fractional concessions from best figures. Total
sales 243.000 shares. Almost the entire active
list, is higher to-night, the only important ex
ception lieing Pacific Mail, which was sold down
rapidly iu the last hour. The following are the

Green & Go. s report on cotton futures savs:
“The contract market was of rather narrow
tone, and while prices have shown a gain of 6 (.77
points for the day, there appears to be nothing
significant in that beyond a timid feeling among
a few of the trade on the short side. Uuder the
impression that cotton was sure to go down, in
sympathy with other speculative commodities,
the market has possibly been shorted by small
operators depending upon a quick decline, and
that not coming they have simply covered,
larger operators were doing little beyond watch
ing the position and standing under August
whenever it was necessary. New crop is slow
under continued cheerful" accounts from the
plant.’’
