Cotton Movement and Fluctuations —La
tham, Alexander A Cos., bankers, commission
merchants, New York.
This work is for the season of 1886-’B7, and
the present season of 1887-’BB. It contains
the firm’s annual letter reviewing the busi
ness of the past cotton year, and discussing
the prospects of the new crop and the busi
ness outlook for the coming year. It also
contains two interesting and valuable arti
cles on cotton and cotton prospects, written
by Thomas Ellison, of Liverpool, specially
for this book It has the usual carefully
prepared tables showing the fluctuations of
cotton contracts and cotton in this country
and Europe, and the receipts, exports and
general movement of cotton for several
years past; also much other information
bearing on cotton the whole forming one
of the most complete, concise and practical
covion reference books published.
Nana: sequel to “L’Assommoir.” By F.miie
Zola. T. B. Peterson A Brothers, Philadel
phia. publishers. Paper, price 25c.
•’r'Nana" is a careful study of the life and
manners of a certain class of people, ordi
narily designated as those of elegant leisure.
The heroine is a variety actress, whose face
and figure create a furore among the fash
ionable Parisians, who follow her on and off
the boards as if she were a veritable queen.
Her life is a life of perpetual excitement
and uninterrupted pleasure, portrayed with
an intensity of graphic delineation which is
almost terrible to realize.
Modern Cities and Their Religious Problems.

affairs to be found to-day in all of our great
eities. It is certainly “ worth a careful
perusal
