BOOK NOTICES.
Rondah; or, Thirty-three Years in a Star, by
Florence Carpenter Dieudonne. Cloth, To
cents; paper cover, 50 cents.
The plot of this story is strange and
weird, and the incidents surprising in the
highest degree. The scene is laid chiefly in
a little star with subterranean volcanic
fires and boiling seas. To this small planet,
not yet entirely fitted for human inhab
itants, some of the characters are conveyed
by extraordinary means from tbe Earth
while a tempest is in progress. Their ad
ventures during the luxuriant summer and
the icy twenty years’ winter are vividly
and strikingly depicted, love, hate, jealousy
and enthusiasm entering largely into their
very peculiar and interesting experience.
Five Hundred Dollars and Other Stories
of New Enoland Life. By C. H. W. 16 mo.
cloth. Price 81.23. Little, Brown & Com
gwiy, Publishers, 254 Washington street,
oston.
This is a volume of humorous stories by a
new writer who has met with great favor
as a contributor to the Century Magazine,
in which “The Village Convict” and “Eli”
—two marked successes—as well as some of
the other stories now collecte 1, were origi
nally published. They are full of quaintly
humorous sayings and sketches of Massa
chusetts fishermen and country fol s along
shore and in the back “deestricks,” and
their peculiarities and genuine, although
homely, wit and humor are depicted and
described by a very careful and truthful
observer and clever writer.
Ecdora; a Tale of Love (illustrated). By M. B.
31. Toiantl, with drawings by H. Siddons
Mowbray and W. H. Gibson, and decorations
in the text by L. S. Ipseu. J. B. Lippinoott
Company, publishers, Philadelphia. Price $3.
This volume is chiefly valuable for its
handsome illustrations—and they are very
handsome —and for its beautiful binding
and handsome typographical work. The
poem is one of considerable merit, but after
all it simply offers the artist, the printer
and the bookbinder an opportunity for dis
piaving t heir skill and taste. The volume
would make an acceptable Christmas
present.
Ashes of the FcTrßE;'a study of mere human
nature. The Suicide of Sylvester Gray, by
Edward Heron-Alien. Belford, Clarke A Cos!,
publishers, New York.
With reference to this work the author
says: “The romance included under the
heading of ‘The Ashes of the Future,’ con
stituting in substance the com
pleted history of a single life,
contain but a single moral, viz: that
man’s dreams of the future are never
realized; that bis castles, reared proudly,
and finished in the air, seldom rise above
the first story on terra flrma."
Anti-Poverty and Progress; Labor and
Capital. By Sister Frances 31. Clare (The
Nun of Kenmare). Belford, Clarke A Cos.,
Publishers. New s’ork.
This work is interesting in view of the fact
that questions which tave been brought be
fore the public by Henry George and Dr. Me-
Glynn are ably and interestingly discussed
in it.
MAGAZINES.
The January numlier of Scribner s begins
the second year of this publication. The
features of the new year promise to be most
interesting and valuable contributions to
literature, and the publishers’ announce
ment of increased excellence in illustration
is evidently to be richly fulfilled. The first
of a series of thoughtful and charming
essays, by Robert Louis Stevenson, is en
titled “A Chapter on Dreams.” In it, he
tells in a personal, intimate way the story
ot “51 v Brownies, God bless them! who do
one-half my work for me while I am fast
asleep, and in all human likelihood, do the
rest for me as well, when I am wide awake
and fondly supix'se I do it for myself.” The
origin of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hvde” and
“Olalla” is incidentally related. ’The lead
ing article of the number—“ The Man at
Arms,” by E. H. Blashfieldand E. VV. Blash
field—is very richly illustrated by the for
mer. Mr. Edward L. Wilson, whose arti
cle on “The Modern Nile” in the
September number of the magazine
was so cordially received, contrib
utes an equally interesting account
of “The Great Pyramid” of Cheops! which
desoribes the appearance and structure of
that ancient monument. The fiction is also
nu exceptionally strong feature of tho num
ber, and much of it is abundantly illustra
ted. Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York.
Tho Cosmopolitan for December presents
the Shah of Tersia in the light of an avari
cious barbarian, to whom cruelty and the
accumulation of wealth are sources of great
pleasure. Olive Thorne Miller’s article on
“Mr. Crowley, the Chimpanzee,” illustrated
by J. Carter Beard, is a charming study of
a creature in the Central Park Zool .gical
Museum. “From Forest to Floor,” a pro
fusely illustrated article by J. Macdonald
Oxley. Accompanying a b au’iful frontis
piece of Mnie. de Longueville, ougraved by
Emile Clement, is an article, entitled “A
Politician and a Saint,” by James Brack
Perkins, who describes vivaciously and wit
tily lie career of the handsomest and most,
notable French woman of the seventeenth

K.NG OF THE DUDES MARRIED.
His Quiet Wedding in Baltimore.
From the Baltimore American.
Among the passengers on the express from
New York Friday afternoon, was Mr. E.
Berry Wall, ox-king of the dudes. Ho was
accompanied by two ladies, one of them a
tall and graceful blonde, with a very pretty
face. Mr. Wall upon leaving the depot or
dered a cab, and the three wore driven to
the St. James Hotel, where the ladies regis
tered—M rs. Milbourne,Washington ;Miss Sa
lome Milbourne, New York. The best rooms
in tlie house were engaged for the ladies,
who immediately retired. Mr. Wall then
called a cab, but before it arrived Miss Mil
bourne had left her mot' er ami joined Mr.
Wall in the reception-room. They were earn
estly engaged in conversation when the
cab was announced. Miss Milbourn was
then placed inside the vehicle with Mr.
Wall, who ordered the driver to call first
at the Maryland Club. Upon arriving at
the club house, Mr. Wall left the young
lady in the cab w hile he sought Mr. Wins
low Williams. That gentleman was found
in the cafe at dinner. Mr. Wall called him
aside, and hastily told him that lie was go
ing to be married at once, and he wanted
Mr. Williams to be his best man. Mr. Wil
liams treated the affair as a huge joke, and
refused to believe him at first, but when
Mr. Wall informed him that he was never
more serious Mr. Williams consented to
act. He then asked when it tvas to come
off, expecting fully a week’s grace, when
Mr. Wall informed him that the prospective
bride was at that moment waiting in
a cab outside to appear before a clergy
man. Mr. Williams protested that he was
not suitably dressed, but to no purpose.
The cloth s he had on, Mr. Wall said, would
answer first-rate. The ex-King of the
Dudes then referred to his own dress as be
ing only ordinary. He wore a black cut
away coat, brown, baggy trows rs, white
vest, a four-in-barni white tie, and a low
derby hat. Mr. Williams was then given
only time enough to get his great coat and
hat, when he was taken out to the cab am l
introduced to Miss Milbourne. Both gen
tlemen got inside, and the cab rolled off to
the office of the Clerk of the Court of Com
mon Pleas, where Mr. Wall expected to ob
tain a marriage license. The clerk’s office
was closed. Here was a dilemma. Home
one around the building suggested
that if the parties were in a hurry
they might hunt up the marriage clerk at
his home, on Caroline street, and perhaps
he could be persuaded to return to tlie court
and issue the license. Acting on the sug
gestion, the party drove over to Caroline
street, saw the clerk, returned with him to
the court and the license wa- issued.
It was now 5 o’clock. “Drive quickly to
the parsonage of St. Paul’s church,” was
the order Mr. Wall gave the coachman as
he was leaving the court office. In a few
minutes the party awaited Rev. W. S. B.
Hodges in the parlor of his residence, on
Saratoga street.
Miss Milbourne, who has auburn hair and
large blue eyes, was dressed in a gray trav
eling dress, a brown hat, and a magnificent
sealskin dolman
Presently the doctor entered the room and
asked Mr. Wall his pleasure.
“We wish to get married,” said Mr. Wall;
“here is the license.”
Dr. Hodges glanced over the document,
and, finding it in regular order, immediately
began tbe coremonv, with Mr. Williams as
the only wit.:ess. When it was all over the
t ride and groom were congratulated by l)r.
Hodges and Mr. Williams. Then they all
left the house and returned to the St. James,
where a handsome wedding dinner was
sened.
Afterward Mr. 'Wall sent a telegram to
the EbLitt House, Washington, eng ging
rooms for to-night. It was reported at the
hotel that Mi's. Milbourne also sent a dis
patch to the same city, something like this:
“Berry and Salome went out for a walk.
When they came back they were marrieiL
Nothing to be dgue but to submit to it ”
It could not be learned to whom the tele
gram was sent, but it is presumed that it
was addressed to Maj. Milbourne. A second
dispatch was sent by Mr. Wall to his
mother in New York. It read:
“I am married to the loveliest girl in the
country.”
After receiving a few friends at the hotel,
the bridal couple, accompanied by the young
iady's mother, left for Washington on the
8:15 train. The bride is a daughter of Maj.
Milbourne, of the 1 War Department, Wash
ington, and has been abroad for nearly
two years. With her mother, she has been
in New York for the past week or so, whither
she went to see her aunt, Mrs. Stone, leave
for Europe. Mr. Wail has known her for
several years, having met her at a swell re
ception in New York.
Longest Balloon Voyage on Record.
From St Nicholas for December.
Prof. John Wise, a world-famed remnant,
sailed through the air in July, 185!). from
St. Louis, Mo., to Henderson, Jefferson
county, N. Y., —a-distauc • in a straight line
of 835 miles. He laid claim to 1,050 miles,
by reason of the many turns taken during
the trip, which took his baboon out of a
direct course into circles and curves. This
voyage is the longest recorded in baboon
history.
The balloon was in the air over night—a
period of about twenty hours. Prof. Wise
tried more than once, but without success,
to equal o;‘ exceed the famous trip mention
ed. Finally, a few years ago, he left St.
Dili is in a balloon on a long trip, for the iast
time. He has never been heard from. A
reporter who went with him wus found
dead some weeks later on t:ie short- of Lake
Michigan. By reason of this and other
disasters, the suggestion ot a long a;i-voy
age gives rise in the public mind to a keen
sense of the perils which attend every at
tempt to stay in the sky over night.
