STOLEN AND SOLD.
£ Baltimore Cbild Sold for S2OO to a
Woman of Vile Reputation.
The New York Mercury of June 16 pub
lishes the following remarkable story:
A remarkable case of abduction has just
been brought to light through Fuller’s
detective agency of this city, and a young
woman restored to her parents after an
absence of many years. Just nine years
ago this May, there resided in Baltimore a
dealer in fancy goods and notions named
Richard Hapeood, with his wife and two
interesting children, a boy and a girl, re
spectively aged 6 and 8 years. The girl,
whoee name was Isabelle, was one
evening playing around the garden
in front of her home when she was ap
proached by a woman who spoke kindly to
her and induced her to stroll a short'dis
tance from the house. That evening, when
Isabelle failed to appear, search was made
for her, but without avail The following
day it was learned that a woman wearing a
heavy veil was seen accompanied by a little
girl of Isabelle's description going toward
the railroad depot. Mrs. Hapgood employed
detectives to overtake the woman, who, it
was learned, had g t off the train about
seventy-five miles fom Baltimore. Here
all further trace of her was lost.
The mother of Isabelle was almost broken
hearted at her disappearance and remained
confined to her bed for almost a month, at
the expiration of which time, although the
woman was not yet 30 years of age. her
former luxuriant head of black hair had be
come completely gray. Almost a year
later, one morning upon open.ng his mail,
Mr. Hapgood came across a letter, written
in almost an undecipherable hand and
dated at Baton Rouge, La., reading as fol
lows:
Mister Hapgood—Ton never done mo
wrong, and I as know de lord almighty will
call all akontable for dey sins dey commit I
will tell you yer chile* was stole by dat
woman Martha Sims, who I used to see at
yer house. I lived with Martha when she
gone and took yer chile r.nd run away and
lef me to go tc New Orleans. When you
sent her away she sworeshe wood get square
and so she has. 1 don’t want to have any
ting to do wit de bisniss, only I seen as how
yee must worry for de little one as gone. I
am gone to new York, and have done wid
de Soth and Martha Sims, and write you
us jest to free my mind towards yee sir.
J. W.
The mention of the child in connection
with the woman Martha Sims at last let
some light upeu the abduction of the girl.
Mr. Hapgood recalled the fact that Martha
was a young octoroon not more than 33
years old, quite light in complexion and
handsome for one of her race, and that she
had been employed in his house for almost
two years as a chambermaid and nurse.
The woman has a habit of considering
herself almost as important in
the household as her employer’s wife, and
Mr. Hapgood noticed that while he treated
her considerately as a servant she at times
acted as thoujh she was desirous of more
familiar rectgnition from him. For this
the man thought it high time to rid his
household of iliss Martha, and one day paid
her in full and gave her notice that her
services were no longer require!. The
pretty octoroon left, vowing she would
make’ her employer regret the action he had
taken.
Losing no time Mr. Hapgood dispatched
a detective to New Orleans in quest of the
octoroon, but he failed to get on her track.
Nine long years went by. and during that
time not a word was heard of Isabelle.
After leaving Baltimore and locating in
this city for six years vast, Mr. Hapgood
learned from a buainesi acquintance in
Baltimore that some pers.n lmd been seek
ing him for the purpose dt giving him in
telligence as to the whereabouts of Isabelle
Hapgood. Mr. Hapgood lurried to Baiti
more about a month tgo, and there
learned that a colored man was
the party memtionec as seeking
him. The man had informed the
present occupant of the ifepgood’s residence
in Baltimore that Isabels could be found in
possession of a white wanan, formerly of
Norfolk, Va.,who was eiucaiing and bring
ing her up as her own, inder the name of
Sarah Hueston, in or nar New York. Mr.
Hapgood came to this 4ty and made haste
to place the task of ccovering his child,
who must now be aboit 17 years of age, in
the hands of;Fuller’s detective bureau. With
a photograph of Isabelb just before her dis
appearance, and a pr&ty good account of
the pretty octoroon md her antecedents,
Supt. Fuller personaly took up the case
and at once started fo' Baltimore to begin
his investigation.
Within thirteen da’s Mr. Fuller returned
and reported to his dent that he had traced
every movement o! Martha Sims since
leaving her former unpioyer’s house, and
discovered that she ted abducted Isabelle,
as suspected. The jirl he had located in a
secluded seminary ii New Jersey, under the
name of Sarah Lueston. The woman
claiming to b her mother, Mr.
Fuller ascertained, was none other
than the misress of a well
known Sixth avenue business man
of this city, and prmerly prop ietor of a
a gilded bagnio oi Thirty-first street. Supt.
Fuller last week acorted Mr. Hapgood to
the seminary, on the hue of the Erie rail
road. The fathei of Isabelle was kept in
an adjoining roon where he could have a
go and view of theyoung girl the detective
was to interview The girl was not made
aware of what she was wanted for until
Mr. Hapgood w fully sati-fled she was his
long missing chid.
Sarah Huestol, as the girl was known at
the seminary, vas then put under close
questioning as bher memories of her earlier
life. The girl well the day she
was taken fron her home in Baltimore by
the young octoioon woman and her arrival
in New Orleans; then her traveling to the
north and beirg compelled to work as a
servant with tie octoroon, who represented
she was her amt, and finally her being
placed in the rare of the white lady, who
treated her kiadlv, and whom she has since
been told w m her mother. This lady,
the girl explained, had cared
for her for ever six years. Upon her
left wrist was noticed an ugly sear, as if
from a cut. This the girl explained was
received in a Ight her octoroon abductress
had in prevertine a colored man, who fre
quently called upon her, from taking her
away, avowng that he would send the girl
back to Baltinore. This incident seemed
to indicate tht the colored man alluded to
mnst have be n the party signing himself
• W.,” who first communicated the fact
that the Sims roman had the child in her
possession to Mr. Hapgood.
The mistressof the Sixth avenue business
man who hac adopted Isabelle Hapgood
"as next vi-it*d, anil she produced a writ
ten document ngned by Martha Sims as
the foster-motbr of Isate’.le, which showed
that as a constleration for the fuil sur
render of the gyl she had received S2OO
cash. \
However, littlt persuasion induced that
woman to expresi her willingness for the
return of the girl/to her rightfui parents,
and the same aftjrnoon the daughter of the
Hapgoods was tdtoti from the Jersey semi
nary and conducted to her future home on
West Fifty-sevbth street.
Last Wednesday the girl was shown a
life-size crayonpie’ure copied from one of
herself when achild just before she was
stolen. She recognized the clothes she
wore in the picture as a child, and when
her mother erfered the parlor the scene be
tween parent and long-lost child became
extremely tqiching. Last night a Mercury
reporter he.rd the story of the girl’s abduc
tion and find recovery from her father.
The oct<roon’s whereabouts cannot be
learned, tat a warrant for her arrest is
to be isued as soon as she can be lo
cated.
