Thi harrels are ‘27 inches long or thereabouts
and figured The
te gbt is anywhere from 4 pounds to
.1 . at a’ P unds being recommended. The
£ormarny is 'JO. It shoots three
eVir-ha of an ounce of fine shot ahead of
two drams of Schultz powder which gives
verv ii::le recoil. It has a killing circle of
wes in diameter at 30 yards, costs from
si i to *250 and is usually made to order to
t he strength and figure. A woman is
measured about as accurately for a flue
shotgun as for a gown. Tue lower Bioad-
Kuv dealer, who has built more guns, in all
nrobabilitv, for tue use of women than any
other man in America, has a biauk form to
be filled in with the bight, length from
armpit to tips of fingers, width from point
of one shoulder to point of tbe other, chest
measure, full breasted or otherwise. Ili ad
dition to these particulars, if the gun is
ordered by the sportswoman in person he
always gives her one to handle, getting points
as to beads and weights from observation of
her carriage.
Mrs. Pierre Lonllard, who has an excel
leut reputation for coolness in the field and
skill owns some tine weapons. Mrs. Cleve
land’has a pretty 12-bore, which was a gift
to her on the eve of one of tbe Adirondack
vacations, but which she has not often
used." It weighs 5% pounds, and the har
rels are of full weight and strength and of
the handsomest finish possible. It requires
loss skill to kill a partridge with it than
when a smaller bora is u-,ed, and hence the
light 12-bore is quite a favorite among
women, at least in their first season’s shoot
ing bertha von Hilleru, who wou quite a
reputation for herself as a pedastradu, is an
excellent shot and uses a single-barreled
gun, which is of 28-caliber and weighs a
trifle under 4 pounds. Miss a Becket, the
artist, who for many summers sheared Miss
von Hiilern’s mountain studio in Virginia,
is rlso an nccui ate markswoman and shoots
with a double- barreled gun of 3t5-caliher.
It is told of the pair that one duy while
they were shooting at a target in the Blue
Kiuge mountains a party of mountaineers
lounged up and watched the practice,
challenging the ladies to a test of skill. The
men were armed with old-fashioned Ken
tucky rifles, while the two artists had modern
breech loaders. The mountaineers were in
vited to set up a target to suit themselves
and choose a distance of 100 yards. They
shot well, but the womeu were iti good
training aud the impromptu match ended m
a draw. A woman who is credited with
almost as much skill with a gun as in snap
shots with the detective camera is the wife
of ex-Seuator l'latt, who is off to bag game
in Alaska.
The rifle, the weapon of precision, is used
by fewer women, though numbers of the
old make of the Remingtons are still in cir
culation. The Marquise de Mores brought
down some game during her ranching ex
periences in Dakota. Her rifle had a short
stock, was of bk-caliber. with 24-inch bar
rel and weighed not over pounds. Tee
breech mechanism was simple, and it was
told of her that first shepbotographed from
horseback a scene of wild life and than she
brought tbe animal which was its focus of
interest down. More ladies shoot at a mark
than at game, but the oxodus to England
every summer and tbe sight of their cous
ins across the waters regularly taking stands
at tlw butts during a grouse drive aud
bringing the game to hag with the skill of
veterans is having its influence on American
women. (load double shot guns are beyond
the purses of any but the rich, but good
si-.gle guns and good single shot rifles are
cheap enough to enable anybody who is not
whsfted with her eyes q,s deadly weapons to
kill in a more effective way.
The business women of New York are
actively discussing the style of dress best

her work she expressed the opinion that it
must be inspiration, a judgment in which
her fellow-boarder war fain to acquiesce,
seeing that away from the writing desk the
famous writer's conversation was equally
thrilling with that which greeted ths ears of
an anxious listener who crept up to Harriet
Martineau and one of her oriiliant contem
poraries to catch the crumbs of wisdom
that might be dropoirg, only to bear in a
tone of profound conviction, “Well, dear,
if I were you I think I’d turn it and have it

Now is the season when the daughters of
wealth plums themselves on foregoing the
joys of Newport or Bar Harbor to make
pilgrimages among the teuement factories,
dropping flowers beside tee machine and
winning black looks for their beneficiaries,
or victims, from the taskmasters who
grudge tue moment of time spent over the
posies. It is too obvious a suggestion to lie
worth making that a movement on tue
part of customers to demand underwear and
clothing which can be guaranteed as paid
for at better rates would enable the teue
ment seamstresses to buy their own blos
soms and the flower distributors to take
their vacation ease with clear con
sciences. The providing of cheap coun
try board for working-woman’s vacations
is a less sensational form of charity than
flower slumming, but more practical. Mrs.
Schuyler Van Rensselaer, the writer on art
and architecture, does much toward main
taining a house on the sound, where girls
can get good rooms and comfortable meals
at 84 or {5 a week while enjoying sea air
and bathing. Mrs. Harper, wife of one of
the members of the publishing firm, pays
out of her own purse the deficit in the bills
of a similar house which takes women for
two weeks’ vacation at Long Branch Still
a third of these summer homes interest tae
efforts of Mayor Hewitt’s daughters. Laura
C. Holloway’s Seidl society takes women
to Brighton beach for afternoon outings
cost free, and the Working Women’s Vaca
tion societies of New York aud Brooklyn
assist several thousands to the joys of green
fields and blue skies. Most of the working
girls’ clubs have saving bank deposits for
vacation funds.

GBOaQB LAW FLEBOSD AGAIN.
Said to Have Been Duped Out of S3O,
000 at Daly’s Gambling House.
From the JVete York Herald.
Lono Branch, July ll.—There is a story
being whispered to-night about the hotels
and places where the wheel goes round and
the chips rattle that is almost a counterpart
of tbe robbing of George Law last summer
in Saratoga. Strange to say, George Law
is again the hero, or rather the victim, of
the occasion.
It is said on the best of authority that on
Monday night Haw was swindled out of
$30,000. According to inv informant. Law
tail the story himself. The young man. it
is well known, is very wealthy, and while a
shrewd, industrious business man when
sober, when drunk is very easily led to part
with large sums of money. This fact has
been cf late years turned to account by a
gang in New York, who have become so
notorious as to bn called the “S.vipes
Guards”and “The Hessians.” They follow
Law about, keeping out of the way while
he remains sober, but a3 soon as they hear
of his being on a spree they swarm down
on him like wolves.
Last year at the springs, when Law was
stopping at the Grand Union, the Hessians
swooped down aud induced him to distrib
ute about sl.'),ood worth of diamonds in the
bar-room. Jere Dunu wears a magnificent
ring presented to him at that time, <uid Joe
Coburn has also a costly memento of the
occasion.
This time, however, the Hessians seem to
have been left. It was tha Long Branch
gamblers who fleaced the victim.
Law came here from Saratoga on Sun
day. He had his valet with him, aud was
just beginning a “toot.” He registered at
tha West End, where the best of care was
taken of him, special efforts beiug made to
save him from tho gang who it was ex
pected would soon flock around him.
SECRETED IN A ROOM.
Mr. Hayes of the hotel tells me he had
Law secreted in a room other than the one
opposite his name on the register. This
was done solely for protection. A forerun
ner of the gang had bean noticed hanging
about the hotel. This was tha spy who
always follows Jaw to notify the Hessians
when to come on. Law was put ia the
second room because at Saratoga tho gang
got onto his apsrtment and actually made
him got up and go away with them.
According to Air. Hayes, Law and his
valet did not leave the room they were put
in, and therefore the story about the young
man’s losses are not true. Ha says a close
watch was kept for the arrival of the gang.
On Tuesday who should put in an appear
ance but Jere Dunn. Law kept out of his
way. A fellow named Shaefer also came
and registered as belonging to the United
Stetes army, but got out when he ascer
tained that his supposed game was known,
but if George Law himself is to be believed,
Dunn and Shaefer, if they baddesignson
Lavr, came to late.
A gentleman from the south, well known
in the sporting world as a man of un
doubted voracity, -and another from tho
west, also of the best standing, tell me that
they saw Law' a few days ago, and he told
them that lie had just been fleocud out of
$:!t),000 by Long Branch sharpers. Oao of
these gentlemen said:
“Of course this thing is being kept quiet.
I got it trom Law’s own lips, and I believo
it.”
SWINDLED WHEN DRUNK.
“This is an outrage. George told me that
he was taken to Daly’s gambling house
while druuk on Monday night , and induced
to play. He did not remember anything
that occurred, except that lie made several
thousand dollar bets. When he got through
he was told that he owed the house $:>0,0U().
He has been iu lots of such scrapes, aud I
consider him a fool to pay under such cir
cumstances; but George is the soul of honor
and always pays.”
“Law has been plucked again sure,” said
the other gentleman referred to. “He told
me so himself aud Ido not doubt it. Thirty
thousand dollars is not much to him, but
the way he lost it makes my blood boil.”
There are two gambling houses here kept
by the Dalys. “Phil” Daly runs the Penn
sylvania club house and John Daly is pro
prietor of the Ijong Branch club house. All
knowledge of the loss of SBO,OOO by Law
was denied at both places.
The young man is said to have gone to
Now York on Tuesday, but I am told that
frieuds have him safely housed iu a cottage
not far from the Branch.
Gossip of tho Stage.
Thatcher, Primrose and West dissolve
partnership Aug. 80.
Emma Abbott is in Bayreuth, Germany.
She sails for home Aug. 10.
Robert Downing’s new play in which he
will be seen next saason is called “The

Mrs. Langtry is confined to her bed at
Long Branch, N. J., with an unusually
heavy cold, and is threatened with an out.
break of congestion of the lungs.
Etolka Gorster u at Berlin, 'Germany,
and it is denied that she has lost her voice
entirely. She sang at a concert in Berlin
last week, for the benefit of tho Johnstown
(Pa.) flood sufferers, and raised about S4OO.
Dunlap’s Stage News has this to say of
one of the Fords’ actors of two years ago:
“Even the cars are beginning to come Mr.
Horace Vinton’s way now. For a time,
even the wild winds didn’t; but now he is
to go on the road with ‘The Dark Secret.’
He is a fine, capable, conscientious actor,
and his ‘Armltage’ in ‘The Livers aud
Lights of London,’‘Denver’in ‘ The Silver
King,’ and his splendid impersonation while
Rose Eytinge’s leading man, cannot readily
be forgotten. For fourteen months he sup
ported Charles Wyndham in Loudon, fie

' I ’HE Cheque Bank checks are equal to cash,

convenient for travelers than letters of credit
or circular notes. They are cashed at current
rate of exchange uud free of commissions or
brokerage fees, ami without Identity of person.
In any part of the world at any time of the day
without reference to banking hours. In other
words, they circulate very much the same
actual currency of the place where they ara
cashed.
The Checks of the Cheque Bank are sold at
tlie current rates of exchange of the day they
are Issued, aud even if the rates happen to ba

We have always in stock large supply of assort
