are to be practical and prominent farmers
and will take in the full fail’s and stock

they s'.ail visit the great grain and stock

ROMANCE OF TWO CONTINENTS
Involving the Kidnaping of the Child
of a Gorman Nobleman.
Pittsburg, Aug. 3. —A romance of two
contineuts, with a sensational climax, in
volving the alleged kidnaping of the ille
gitimate child of a German nobleman, has
just come to light in this city.
One day this week there called at the
office of W. J. Jordan, a well-known attor
ney, a boaut.ful young German woman,
who wis. ed to retain his servie?s to assist in
recovering her ch.ld, which had, she said,
been spirited away from the West Penn
ti .spital. Her Dame, she said, was Barbara
Hoffman, and her home is at Furth, a
Bavarian city. Her father was a well-to-do
shoemaker in her native town and has died
since she came to America.
T—AX ItTMATE OF A BARONIAL CASTLE.
When Barbary was still in her early teens
her beauty attracted the attention of a
daughter of Baron Poertel, a wealthy noble
man, residing a short "distance from Furth.
Tue result was that the shoemaker’s daugh
ter was installed in tho castle of tho Poortels
as an attendant to the young lady who had
admired her beauty. As Barbara advanced
in years her beauty became the ta kof all
who saw her, and at 20 she was thought to
be one of the handsomest women in Ba
varia.
About this time Baron Adolph von
Biener, tiie young son of a noble friend of
Baron Poertel, came to the latter’s ca3tlo on
invitation to spend the three months’ leave
of absence ho had obtained, he being
attached to a civil government office.
Adolph and Barbara fell in love with each
other. Her betrayal followed. About a
week before he was to leave Barbara tear
fully told him that she would in time be
come a mother, and begged him to do
something to bide her shame, as the knowl
edge of it would kill her father. Baron
Adolph, on account of social differences,
declined to marry the girl. Jie told her he
weuld give her money- to take her awav
from her native city and support her. lie
said be would also take charge of the child.
THE GIRL COMES TO AMERICA.
Plentifully supplied with funds the girl
was sent to this city where an uncle, Will
iam Kingloman, resides. At Castle garden
a “shark" robbed her and p it her on a trai l
for Pittsburg. Arriving Imre she wandered
about the streets until taken in by a Ger
man family on 8 mailman street. There
she remained until Jan. 8, when she was
taken to the West Penn hospital, where
her child, a girl, was born. Two days later
a closely veiled Indy, who had lost her coild,
called at the hospital. She wanted to adopt
Miss Hoffman’s babe, and by promising to
write frequently and rear as a Oath lie, se
cured the young woman’s consent. 0.1 Jan.
11 the child was talteu away. Barbara
knew not whither.
For many weeks she lay in r fever. Baron
von Biener, too, wrote’ asking her to gn
back to Germany, sending money and
promising to care for their child, it was
not until tho middle of May that the young
woman was able to leave the hospital. Since
then she and her friends have searched and
inquired for tho veiled woman in vain.
Neither the hospital authorities nor the girl'
had seen her face or asked her name or ad
dross. Nothing has been heard of her since
she t 'ok the little German babe awav. Tiie
hospital people say it was tho girl’s affair,
not theirs, and that such cases are frequent,
THE BARON WANTS lIIS DAUGHTER.
But Baron Adolph von Biener wants his
daughter, and has instructs! Barbara to
employ counsol and spare no expense to find
the veiled woman and recovor the babe.
Father Loo of St.. Augustine's Roman
Catholic church has aiso taken an interest
in the case.
Once iound Barbara and her child will
return to Bavaria and then there will boa
wedding in Furth.
