WHAT BAPELO OFFERS.
The Bar Haa a Depth of 25 to 28
Feet at High Water.
Darium, Aug. 12.—“ The many projected
railroad lines, in conjunction with those in
tho actual course of construction, from the
interior through the river and coast coun
ties of Georgia, naturally attract a good
deal of attention at tho present moment,”
said a prominent citizen to-day. “Apart
from the certainty,” he continued, “that
these roads will prove profitable in
themselves, traversing as they do
sections that are rich in material
and fertile in soil, additional
speculative features of interest are a-soei
ated with them by their respective chances
of connection with inland lines seeking new
ocean outlets and better shipping facilities
for their yearly increasing lreigut. iVtitle
powerful railroad corporations interested in
such commercial strongholds as, for in
stance, Savannah, will naturally fight
bravely against any attempt to divert ai.y
share of the interi r trade to new points f
outlet—evep though it be demonstrated
that these new outlets offer superior ad
vantages—yet tho day is not far distant
when the rapidly increasing commerce of
the country will demand not only addit - mal
outlets, but that the points offering the bo-t
facilities shall be utilized in preference to
others.”
“You think, then, that some places are
favoied from simply selfish motives?”
“I know they are! Hero is a map of the
last government survey. Look at the depth
of water on Sap-.-lo bar—lß feet. Well,
with a rise of tide of from 7 to 10 feet, tln-re
is not a particle of doubt that Sapelo can
boast of from 25 to 28 teet of water—suffi
cient for the largest ocean-going crafts.
Now, look at the surrounding ports. There
is no place, in fain, on the South Atlantic
coast whien can cope with Sapelo.”
“But perhaps the configuration of the
surrounding land is not suitable. It may
be marshy and unhealthy—unfit, perhaps,
for the building up of a city?”
“No, sir,” was the answer. “You make
a mistake there. Here is Sutherland's
Bluff, and next to it Belleville and Bais
den’s Bluff, all surrounding the harbor; the
highest, kind of coast land and tho healthiest
place in this great land of ours.”
“Admitting that these places are ex
tremely healthy, ms they naturally must be
from their close proximity to the ocean,
there may be other stumbling blocks in the
way. Perhaps, for example, shipping
might be exposed to the fury of a turbulent
ocean ?”
“No,” was the answer. “Vessels could
ride out any gale with perfect safety in the
sound, but, apart from this, the loading
places for vessels of deep draught, viz.,
Dog Hammock, Julienton creek aid
Creighton Islaud are almost entirely land
locked.
“Well, now, speaking about these coast
railroads, the timber trade of Darien, de
pendent as it is upon the water courses, A1
tamaha, Oemulgee, Oconee and Ohoow-e, is
hound to hold its own ngaiu-t any land
transportation combinations that mar ba
formed to lessen it, will it not?” was quer
ied.
“Not at all,” he replied. The Americas,
Preston and Lumpkin road on both sides of
the Oemulgee will drain the principal tim
ber belt ou which the Oemulgee depends.
Tho material under the control of this r- ad
will be landed wherever they decide to
locate their terminus. On tha eastern side
of the Eat Tenness‘o, Virginia uud Go r
gia road the two lines, Hawkins’ and the
Central’s, take in the best timbered lands of
Montgomery and Tattnall counties,
thus diverting the lion’s share of
rho Oconee’s and the Ohoopa-j’s supplies.
Emanuel county’s supply to the water
courses is also cut short by the Central’s ex
tension, and Laurens ami Johnson counties
likewise. ”
“But it will make no perceptible differ
ence in our supplies for years to come?” was
asked.
“Oh, yes, it will. The Americas, Preston
and Lumpkin roadjou tho western side of the
East Tennessee, Virginia and Goergia road
has already decreased the Ocmulgee’s sup
ply considerably, and when either Che Cen
tral or the Hawkins line is completed east
of this rqnd the loss to the Oconee and the
Oemulgee will bo severely felt and uvu here ”
“How do you propose toiamedy this?”
was asked.
“By railroad connection,” ho replied,
“with one or more of these systems. Our
rivers will always bring us a certain sup
ply of timber. That these railroads with
their many extensions will lessen it to a
lamentable degree is certain. But no net
work of roads possibly contemplated could
oyer deprive us of a fair supply of yellow
pine. All we yant is the attention of com
merce drawn to our ocean-shipping facili
ties in the county, viz: Sauelo. This ac
complished, not only the resources of
adjoining counties in the state, but the
products of other states will seek
an outlet at our unequaled Sapelo liar. The
magnetic needle of western and northwest
ern commerce will al ways persists itly point
toward Sapelo. We may have to wait a
year, or a few years, but* it will eventually
dawn upon parties interested that while
millions of dollars are being wasted oil
inferior bars and harbors, Sapelo, assisted
by nature alone, will remain the queen of
ocean outlets. Hm.

Hale and Hearty in Old Age.
What is more beautiful than an ancient tree
clothed with an ample robe of verdure? Apt is
the comparison between such ft growth and an
old man or woman infused with health and
vigor. The sine qua non, the indispensable con
dition of vigorous youth, robutft manhood and
a virile old ago is sound digestion. Without
this life is shorn of Lhe heart.; zest that should
attend it. No more beneficent nud agreeable

found than ilostetter's Stomach bitters. Dys
