ISLANDS.
“The houseboat i ids fair to becoino a
distinctive feature of our sea lery. Four or
five wealthy Canadian families are sum
mering m these delightful floating cottages.
They are ranged close to the shore over
against two ot the prettiest Canadian
islands and form quite a social colony,
where afternoon teas are given, visits made
in fast-flying canoes, with now and then a
moonlight concert, a dance or a supper and
about all a tense of romance and glorious
freedom. When you get tired of the rocky
shores overhung with trees about your
houseboat, all you hive to do is to up an
chors and shove yourself along with poles
to a fresh abiding place, or if a more am
bitious move is desired you call a launch
or a tug and steam away to another island.
Yesterday afternoon was a fete day and we
were almost as gay as at Henloy ou the
Thames. Our Canadian friends enter with
the utmost heartiness into everything. The
houseboats were decorated with bright
flags and huge parasols of flowers. There
were flowers everywhere. Huge eartheu
ware vases and blue china jars were ranged
along decksand golden rod and wild scarlet
hollyhocks and cardinal flowers bloomed in
profusion, clematis vines with iheir white
feathery : eeds clambering from drawl ridge
to awning. Light cedar canoes glided from
island to island and dozens of rowboats
danced on the waters. There were tennis
games and cricket on a convenient
meadow, and these northern girls
looked more blithesome ovtu than
during the winter carnival iu their silk
blouses of lilac, pale yellow, scarlet ami
blue, with white glazed sailor hats, baseball
and Eton caps, soft round felts and broad
brimmed bead fixings of every desoripti in.
Sometimes, a whole boatload wore the same
colors. A six-oared barge was man ■ed by
half a dozen damsels in yellow and black,
who made a picturesque crew But if you
want to fail a victim to the ewig weibliche
you should see a handsome Canadian girl
puddle a canoe. The houseboat in which
we are visiting is not by any means a mere
drifting raft. It is a regular two-story
house built ou a barge, with lace cu r tains
at its windows and ten rooms inside. It
has a flat roof where we strew rugs and
cushions and lie in steamer chairs amf ham
mocks under a gnv, striped awning It
hasn’t ns many gables as a Quee.i Anne
cottage, indeed, truth compels the admis
sion chat it is rectangular in sh peand
suggests a packing box floating, but it is
painted in reds and cool greens and 1 oks
very gay of an evening with rows of Japan
eselanterns hanging from beam to beam,
ft has a gooa expanse of deck fore and aft
where are more awnings and hammocks a id
easy, chairs, and where we l ave morning
giories and nasturtium* and scarlet runners
growing in flower b xes. There is a bath
room upstairs, but if you want a really
good plunge of course you take a header
out of tue windo w. We haven’t a piano,
but our next boat neighbor has, and the
music goes very well with our violin. There

FROM A PRETTY NARRAGANSF.TT MAID.
“Here is the device of one N'arragan
sett girl. Wearing a pale blue musliu
gown embroidered about tho bottom iu
jink and gold tinsel, with a pink and gold
carf about her waist and a leghorn hat on
her head, from which droop garlands of pink
and yellow roses, she takes her seat at the
fashionable driving Hour every afternoon
in what sort of vehicle do you suppose'
What but a hand cart or push cart, per
haps you call it, of the same sort as those
used by city costermongers, but minus the
bells over the top, neatly finished in black
and gilt and sumptuously cushioned. With
a blue gauze parasol knotted with pink
ribbon t > shade her face and a tail toot
man in knee breeches to propel her she looks
as well content as if she ha,l coosen for her
pleasuring any one of the dozen or more
and g carts or wagons at her command. This
eccentric belle conies from Denver and tnev
say she has money to throw away. She is
quite pretty and doesn’t appear conscious
ttiat she is doing anything strange.”
FROM A WELL-KNOWN LITERARY WOMAN
WHO HAS BOUGHT A VACATION HOUSE
FOR HER CHILDREN.
“I tried the stable for a while, but the
b ard money burned iu my pocket, and be
fore the first week was over I was the own
er of a steed. Ho is, I admit, not a thing
of beauty, though he apparently has been a
borse forever. Ho is not fortunate in bis
color, being a dark shade of white mottled
with a kind of crushed strawberry spots.
His gait is a little uudulatory, especially on
a down grade, where he finds it convenient
to favor one of bis off legs. He is not bur
dened with superfluous flesh and has served
as an object lesson iu anatomy to our chil
dreu, thus enabling us to combina instruc
tion with pleasure as we jog along. Archi
tecture.iy considered, he would perhaps be
classified as a specimen of the pointed
gothic, would be called by archaeologists
antique, and by the ladies possibly a moire
antique. The name by which he is known
among the people whose parents ho has out
lived is ‘Whalebone,’ which gives some clew
to his character. The young members of
the family wished him rechristened and to
please both of them we added the word,
‘Hatty,’ subsequently changed to ‘Dick.’
The young man of tho household, following
a taste we fear vitiated by surreptitious
reading, added his mite to tho horse’s name,
so that at present he is known in the fami
ly which he adorns as ‘Whalebone Ned; or,
the Phantom of the Plains.’”
FROM WANDERERS DOWN IN MAINE.
“Wecame across three women farmers
the other day the story of whose doings
might interest you. Driveu out of the
woods somewhere above east Norridge wock,
for lack of provisions, we met a good-look
ing woman iu wide-brimmed felt hat and
thick boots driving an ox team. Inquiring
of her where we could obta.n a dinner, we
were directed to a long low farm house, a
weather beaten pink in color, standing un
der a group of magnificent maple trees.
Here we found twoothor women, intelligent
looking like the first, oue digging potatoes,
the other canning berries in a spic and span
Kitchen and apparently on a large scale. Wo
had stumbled on a partnership,
the members to which are ail feminine. It
seems that two of the women are sisters,
the Misses F—, and that the farm belonged
to their father who left it to them in a
somewhat run down and unprofitable con
dition. Unable to sell except at a sacrifice,
they were puzzled as to their proper line of
action until Miss M—, wh i had inherited a
lit ie money and earned a lit le more in the
millinery business, tired of the confinement
of indoor life, proposed to go in with them
and test the question whether women could
make a farm pay. They aro not flue lady
farmers by any means, overlooking t ings
in a Dresden china sort of way, but spend
much of their time at such work as is not
too heavy for thorn in the open air. They
have about 200 acres, a part of which is in
pasturage, and on the rest they grow pota
toes, turnips, carrots, onions, cibbiges and
the crops of the general farmer. They have
an apple orchard in a tine state of cultiva
tion, and raise quantities of blackberries
and raspberries and some other small fruits,
which they can for the Boston market.
They do toeir own milking, make butter,
when the factory is not running, feed their
own pigs, ride the mowing machines and
the reapsis and help iu all the operations
ot sowing aud harvesting. For the heavier
work they have two farm iabirers, some
times in t e busy season three. They read
the Atlantic Monthly and are progressive
Yankee women witn ideas about temper
ance and dres3 reform. They aro all throe
in excellent health, have forgotten the
meaning of headache aud say they like their
work and are able to make a very fair liv
ing. In the winter they frequently chop
wood witn their men.”
FROM THE PROUD POSSESSOR OF A BROTHER
AT YALE.
“We had a tenuis party at Great Barring
ton on Saturday, and between you and me
it was quite a pretty affair. Ail the young
men who were iuvit and were Yaie students
and accordingly we had a deep blue awning
—the college color —spread under a group
of oaks overlooking the lawn. Beuoaih
this was the tea table with a scarf of blue
silk running the length of the cloth. For
the central ornament we had a low antique
bowl of blue china holding white lilies, aud
occasionally trailing water lilies
with their twisting stems. Be
side each plate were set small
tennis shoes of while straw filled with blue
chiccory a ternating with miniature tennis
rackets having clusters of blue bachelors’
buttons knotted upon tueln with blue rib
bons. These were for favors, and very
pretty they looked hanging from the girls’
waists by their long streamers. All the
girls who received wore white gowns with
blue sashes and carried bundles of blue
flowers. The Y'ale men sang their college
glees and with them they mi ngled songs of
the sea and of the country lanes, every su;
gestion being of coolness, of sparkle, of the
green grass ad trees of midsummer. I
have seen only one fete this summer that
was prettier and that was a grape party at
Stockbridge a fen days before. The wide
verandas of the cottage furnished tho as
sembling rooms, aud these were draped with
green vines which hung like portieres in
the doorways. Huge white marble vases
stood in corners filled with double white hol
lyhocks, wild carrot and caraway blossoms
and stalks of feathery grass-s. Tea was
se. ved iu the fruit garden under a long
grape arbor. Tne table was covered with a
cloth of pinkish green silk embroidered in
purple floss with grape clusters. In the
middle of the table was a crystal bowl piled
high with green and whito grapes half hid
den in their own loaves. The nostess wore
a pale green silk Josephine dress with a
purple scarf at her waist, and the attendants
were maids in white dresses with vine
leaves on their hair. There was a harvest
dance of children dressed os cupids and
nymphs in tho edge of the evening.”
FROM THE ADIRONDACK WILDERNESS.
“The yew bow is the latest appendage of
the woman who plunges among the treei.
Wherever you come upon a camping party,
tho summer girl, be she climbing a wooded
slope or picking berries in an open glade,
abandons ber nbbou-tied Alpenstock and
leans like Maid Marion on a bow. This
sudden passion for Robin Hood’s weapon
does not imply a high degree of the archer’s
skill. Indeed, many of the belted and tas
seled damsels would be at a loss if called
upon to nock the arrow or draw the string.
Tuough a few of them can knock over a
partridge or a horon at short range, the de
sign of the arcber’s outfit is nothing more or
les ■in most instances than to justify a
pretty and convenient woods costume. A
typical example of the bowman’s drees is
worn by a Brooklyn girl whose party have

been in camp for a mouth ou one of the be.-t
grounds. The gown is a <lark hunter’s i
greon serge, tne skirt of which is turned up
in a hem S or 10 inches wide.aud which falls
only a trifle below the knees. With this is
worn a loose sailor blouse of the same color
aud ma'erial brier stitched in white and
with a crimson tie knotted under tne collar.
Lubber-soled buskins without heels cover
the feet, and above theeo are bucKed leg
gins of undressed tawny leather reaching
above the knees. On her head she places a
green serge fore-and-aft cap, and about her
waist is a bolt of the same tawny leather,
holding pouch for the arrows, tassel and
spare string. The bow itself, which, like a
muff or a parasol, compie'es the t ilet, is a
little over 5 feet long between nocks, and
its strength is about 2fi pounds. It is a tine
piece of yew, valued at nearly f liG. and
makes a pretty appearance with its crimson
plush-covered handle. To do this Brooklyn
girl justice, she practices shooting at a tar
get nearly every windless day aud is quite
absorbed in the care of her turkey feathered
arrows.”
FROM ATLANTIC CITY.
“There is one thing that occupies women’s
thoughts in summer to the exclusion of tue
suffrage, and that is hair. What becomes
of’he possessor of tresses in a damp sea
son! Where is the use of spending hours at
one’s mirror to make feat hers lig itiy blow
ing ab ut one’s temples or rings that catch
the light in their love curls when ten nnn
utos of fog or sea turn will reduce tne whole
to dank, wet looking strings* Where is the
joy of passing one’s summer on yachts or
rocks if pretty hair is to be impossible from
June to October? Here is where the sum
mer youth has an incontestable advantage.
He can sit down beforo the clipping ma
chine and rise up to pass tho season in his
scuff. He does not u tve to labor over an
artistically careless coiffure to see Dame
Nature lay it in inartistically careless ruins.
