gSCOND ADVENTISTS GETTING
BEADY THE IB BOBES.
■rjjeir prediction Said to be Pounded
on Biblical Prophecies— Former ‘ Last
pays" Recalled The Followers of
Wi'liam Miller as Confident Now as
in Former Years, but No Exact Date
Given.
From the Xew York If" arid.
Forty thousand apparently rational men
s ad women throughout the United States
Canada believe that on or before tne
cjffiing iSth day of October, A. D. 1889,
the world will have come to an end; that
the nations of the earth will have been
blended into one people, speaking one
tongue, and that over all for 1,000 years
one spiritual ruler will hold sway. They
believe that if it does not happen before
toat day the sun on the morning of Oct. 36
will remain stationary on the horizon, and
on Its upper and visible arc will appear,
reaching back into an illimitable vista, an
angelic host, and in the midst of this host
• a woman, clothed with the sun and the
moon under her feet, and upon her head a
crown of twelve stars.” Tnen the seven
trumpets are to be sounded by the seven
angels, and the “third woe,” as predicted
in the Book of ltevolations, will have begun
its fulfillment.
Contrary to all precedents, the Second
Adventists, both of the United States and
England, have not set a specific day for the
cm?of time, but they are mutually agreed,
with a few isolated exceptions, that tne
most careful calculations prove beyond the
possibility of an error that the hour will
not go beyond the date named. In 1843 and
1544 William Miller fixed the day in each
year as Oct. ID, anu when his prediction did
not come to pass he explained that the
diffe.ence between Jewish and Roman time
misled him both as to the month and the
year. Before bis death, which took place
in 1849, he left directions sfiowiug how ac
curate calculations might be made, and on
these were based the prophecies of the
world’s end in 1857, 1867, 1873 aud
the present year. They all rest on
one foundation, viz., the fulfillment of pre
vious bitiical prophecies and the assump
tion that this indicated further fulfillments
thereafter. It is claimed that inasmuch as
the birth of Christ was foretold (Isaiah vii.,
14), and that the birth should take place in
Betidebem (Micah v., 3), and the several
other prophecies concerning a Messiah
(Isaiah iii., 8-9; Psalms xvi., 10) all came to
pass precisely at the time aud in the manner
prescribed, that the fourth prophecy (the
second appearance of the Messiah) de
manded belief. It was not until William
Miller undertook to set the exact period
that there had been any previous effort in
that direction. The beginning of the
eleventh century had been looked forward
to—with awe and dread, it is true —but
none of the religi .us teachers of those days
ventured positive predictions. It was not
until nine centuries had elapsed that a
prophet arose, who, in an incredibly short
space of time, gathered about him thousands
of followers who have maintained their
faith with a steady persistency in the face
of failure, opposition and ridicule.
Millerism, or, as it is called now, second
adventism, has its strongest foothold in
New England, where all herterodox isms
seem to flourish best. It has more believers
in the state of Massachusetts than in any
other of the eastern states, and in the city
of Boston there is a weekly publication
devoted to the promulgation of the doctrine.
Vermont furnishes the next largest quota,
and then comes New Hampshire and Con
necticut. A few are scattered through
Maine and Rhode Island. There is no
regular place of worship in the city of New
Wk, and the believers, even in a city of
2,000,000 people, are few and far between.
In the city of Philadelphia there are two
small congregations, and in south and east
New Jersey half a dozen all told. In the
upper part of this state and on the Pennsyl
vania border line there are several thousand
believers.
The western states, especially Minnesota,
furnish the next largest number of believers.
They may be grouped in this wise: New
England, 13,000; middle states, 6,000;
western states, 8,000: northwest, 2,000;
Canada, 5,000. Asa body the Second Ad
ventists do not differ materiallv with the
great leading doctrine of the Evangelical
church. They are essentially Casuists, but
conform readily to whatever forms of law
under which they live.
The failure of Miller’s prophecy in 1543
first brought the sect into prominence
throughout the civilized world. The
founder was a man of much magnetism
and, while not scholarly, possessed a rude
logic that attracted attention even among
the learned. His hypothesis was so in
genious and so cleverly dovetailed that the
announcement that the end of the world
was at hand created a noticeable excite
ment all over the country. While
thousands scoffed at the theory, they never
theless felt slightly uneasy as the day
approached, and there are men living now
who remember many who, though loudest
in their ridicule, were the last to go to bed
that night. Among the believers the faith
was firm. Scores of farmers in Massachu
setts, in the vicinity of Pittsfield, abandoned
their property to whoever cared to take it
-or a few hours, and patiently awaited the
Plowing of Gabriel’s horn. Marriage en
gagements were broken, written business
contracts between believers were destroyed,
11 J 'O belief that they could never be carried
°ut. Children were permitted to go un
for t and mothers who had been
- ritty housewives for years dropped all
heir household duties. As the day came
earer the fervor grew greater, and con
locked to the Millerite standard by
ousands. Among the extremists in the
active preparations were made for

J. McArthur, he shakes his head doubtfully and
tries to raise objections, but it is one of the
truths of history all the same.
While Miller was disappointed, he was
not dish?artened, and ha immediately set
about discovering the cause for his e ror.
He found it, as he claimed. In the anachron
ism, and in a few weeks made bis second
announcement for the year 1844.
The faith of a number of believers had
weakened by that time, but they were in
the minority, and almost the same scenes
were re-enacted that year that had caused
such a sensation in 1843. The world in
general took Jess interest in the movement,
aud the chroniclers of the day devoted
themselves principally to bn ad buriesque.
In 1857 there was a still further falliug
off, although the financial panic of that
period was looked upon as one of the
principal omens. Ten years later, after the
war of the rebellion had closed, there was
another prophecy which was not fulfilled,
and then came ’73, and with it the great
financial crash. Again this was looked upon
as an omen, and many of the faithful gave
up their property and abandoned their pur
suits. The anachronism was blamed a fifth
time, and the calculators applied themselves
diligently to hunting for the causes. A
great many years were spent in this work,
aud at the last it was found that 1889 was
the fateful year, and that the “seventh dav
of the tenth month” fell between Oct. 15
and 35, according to the present method of
time computation. On this the Adventists
take their stand, and ask the unregenerate
to take heed and prepare for the “dies
tree.”

What?
What is the use of wasting by paying
from $3 to $5 more for a suit of clothes than
you can buy at “ The Famous ”? If you
have plenty, there is no use in throwing it
away; if you work hard for it, so much
more reason for saving it. If you want as
much for your dollar as anybody can give
you, you must buy your clothing, hats,
etc., at “The Famous,” 144 Congress street,
corner Whitaker.
The Tribulations of Salesladies.
Possibly the hardest worked class in
America are the shop girls in our stores.
On their feet for long hours, the constant
strain soon enfeebles the body aud brings
on that sallow, careworn look .-.o frequently
seen in the faces of girls and women com
pelled to labor behind counters for a sup
port. To such P. P. P. (Prickly Ash, Poke
Root and Potassium) is a welcome remedy,
as it is a great natural tonic and invtgi rator
and brings back the color to pale cheeks
and strength to tired limbs. It is the best
all round blood purifier, and if the blood is
pure aud clean the body must of a necessity
derive great benefit and ultimate vitality
and energy. P. P. P. cares all blood dis
eases, such as syphilis, rheumatism, gout,
scrofula, and is a foe to that great human
demoralizer dyspepsia. It can be obtained
of ali medicine dealers and druggists.
When
You are ready to buy your clothing, go
straight to ‘‘The Famous." I have fresh,
choice goods at most reasonable prices. I
have also the stock of the old firm, which I
bought below par and offer at 70 cents on
the dollar, a big thing if you know- the
value of goods. If you are looking tor bar
gains you must go to “The Famous": on
hats you can save 50 cents to sl. 144 Con
