the heroine op the corona.
Charity Lambert, the Negress Who
Saved eo Many Souls.
FYnrn the New York Times.
New Orleans, La., Oct. 19.—1n almost j
every B rfca: disaster among; the steamboats j
of the Mississippi river some ideal Bludsoe
or realistic Given has appeared, to leave the
impress of his heroism and self sacrifice
upon the terrible event.
Charity Lambert, the simple black ne
p-ess whose bravery saved so many lives in
the recent explosion of the Corona, is one
of these heroic souls. Chanty was born in
Maryland —when she does not know. Mrs.
Capt. Blanks, with whom she has served
for many years, thinks she must !*e on the
shady side of half a century, though her
face' is deceiving. When only 5 years
of age she was sent south, and
the changes of time made her a resident of
Arkansas, where she spent a goodly portion
of her early life. Here she lived during the
vears of the war between the states, and she
Served faithfully as a domestic, finding her
wav finally into the Blanks family. Nearly
twenty years ago she came to New Orleans,
and for eighteen consecutive vears she has
been in the employ of Cant. J. W. Blanks,
always steadfast, always dutiful.
Fourteen years ago Capt. Blanks offered
her a berth on the river, and up to the time
of the explosion of the Corona she has been
steadily running on the Misissippi and its
various tributaries in which Capt. Blanks’
boats have plied. She has been in several
previous accidents, but has always been
fortunate, and ha3 always shown most re
markable presence of mind in times of
danger. Many years ago she was on the
Lottie Warner’ which struck a snag
and sprang a serious leak. The boat did
not go down, but there was much alarm
aboard, aDd Mammy showed the stuff of
which she was made later on. She was a
passenger on the Rapides, on which an ex
plosion of the boilers was narrowly
avoided. The flues had become red-hot at
night through some fault of the employes
of the boat, and the passengers were awak
ened by stifling steam in the cabins. There
was the greatest consternation while
the boilers were being cooled
down, and, in momentary fear of an ex
plosion, the passengers were in the deepest
distress. Here again Charity stood true to
her name and used all her exertions in calm
ing the distressed. In later years she was
on the John Wilson when that boat was
snagged on Black river, and repeated her
previous jiorfcrinances when the danger
was worst. The same was true of her when
the Wilson took fire, and here again she
showed the same admirable disregard for seif
and brought her coolness to bear in pacify
ing the panic-stricken passeugers.
But the crowing glory of her life was her
heroism in this last disaster, in which forty
souls were hurled into eternity without
warning. Charity was token aboard the
boat by Capt. Blanks as chambermaid. The
ill-fated boat was ascending the river at the
usual rate of speed, and Charity was to
ward the rear of the boat ironing when she
heard the whistle blow. The familiar toot
ing of the Corona had scarcely died away
when the most terrific explosion
that ever shocked her ears took place,
and the gallant craft shivered and shook
and seemed to be parting in two. Mammy
had scarcely time to look around when the
door burst open and the ladies ran in im
ploring her assistance. Her quick intuition
oame to her aid, and she saw that some
thing must be done, and done quickly, to
save the passengers. Hurriedly, but
calmly, she went to the place where the
life preservers were kept and parceled
them out to the terror-stricken ladies until
all were supplied but herself, and, heedless
of her own safety, sheled the way to the
roof.
All who had been provided with life
preservers bv the noble, self-sacrificing old
uegress floated on the surface and were
saved, except Mrs. Hough, who was struck
by a door and drowned beneath the weight
übove her head. Oid Mammy, after strug
gling in the water for several minutes, was
finally rescued by a roustabout. Ever un
selfish, she begged her rescuer to save the
white ladies iirsc and leave her to take care
of herself.
Tne Kickers’ Column.
We have opened this column for “kick

nature, and want to air them. Although
no public invitation has been heretofore ex

contributors.
Editor News: Why don’t you publish
more society news? and why is it that my

Editor Morning News: Why is there
such a dearth of decoration in the drawing
rooms of our leading people? Have you
seen the lavish display of decorative arti

berg & Bros.’? 1 never saw the like—like a

modesty I would suggest that a Gold-headed
