The “May Blossom" Company Opens
Its Savannah Encasement.
The “May Blosaoin” Company opened ite
engagement at the theater last night with
the popular Madison Square success. “May
Blossom’’ is one of the prettiest plays that
is seen in Savannah, and the company pre
senting it last night is one of unusual
strength. The way the audience received
the company is the best evidence of its
ability.
To-night “Kathleen Mavourneen” will be
given. The News and Courier says of a
recent performance of the play by the
company in Charleston, following a per
formance of “Oliver Twist,” by the same
company:
“Miss Lillian Brainard proves herself an
actress of rare versatility. From the rough
and tragic ‘Nancy Sikes’ of the night be
fore to the tender and bewitching ‘Kath
leen’ is a wonderful change, and though
her acting in ‘Oliver Twist’ was admired,
the applause and laughter last night
showed that the majority of the theater
goers prefer comply to the harass
ing scenes of sensational drama. Mr.
Maurice Flynn was perfectly at home in
the character of Terrence and excited the
risibilities of the audience in the lighter
scenes and made them weep with him when
he was about to be torn from his sweetheart
to face the gallows. Mr. Fred Jerome, in
the part of ‘Bernard Kavauaugh,’ was
very effective. Miss Marie Merriam as
•Kitty,’ and Mr. Opperman as ‘Billy But
toncap.’were extremely funny: in fact the
whole company showed to the best ad
vantage.”
AN INJUNCTION WANTED
Against the Central Kailroad and the
City of Savannah.
James R. Ward filed in the office of the
superior court clerk, yesterday, a bill for
for injunction, for damages and equitable
relief against the mayor and aldermen of
the city, and the Central Railroad and
Banking Company, Garrard & Meldrim
being the attorneys for the petitioner.
The declaration alleges that a portion of
plaintiff’s property at the corner of River
and McGuire streets has been encroached
upon for the purpose of widening River
street, and that his brick building, occupied
rs a grocery and residence, which he values
at $9,(100, has been lessened in value and
impaired both as a residence and a business
property. He claims that the walls of the
building have been cracked by the jar of
the cars striking each other, and from
causes, and that the proximity of the
railroad to his property not only interferes
with his business, but prevents him from
the quiet and enjoyment of nis home, and
he asks that the railroad be enjoined from
operating the road, and the city from re
taining the encroachment without a reason
able compensation for the same. The
amount of damages is not stated, but the
court is asked to grant equitable relief.
NEW LOAN COMPANY.
A Branch of the Southern Home
Organized in Savannah.
A branch agency of the Southern Home
Building and Loan Association was organ
ized last night at the office of G. B. What
ley, with the following board of directors:
R. S. Mell, George W. Tiedeman,
Lester Hubbell, R. L. Rockwell,
J. F. Teitjen, M. Dryfus,
T. H. HcGillis, R. H. Bashlott, Jr.
The following officers were elected:
President—R. S. Mell.
Vice President—George W. Tiedeman.
Treasurer—Lester Hubbell.
Secretary and Attorney—G. B. Whatly.
The association starts' off with a sub
scription of nearly SIOO,OOO, most of which
has been taken within the last ten days.
The association is a branch of the Southern
Home Building and Loau Association
of Atlanta, an institution capitalized at
$20,000,000. The Savannah brauch operates
under authority of the Atlanta association.
All loans are negotiated through the local
branch.
The United States Court Grand Jury.
The United States grand jury, which
was In session yesterday forenoon,adjourned
until 9:30 o’clock this morning, at which
time the court will convene and a partial
report of the grand jury is expected to l e
made. All the examinations of cases which
have been under consideration by the grand
jury have not yet been concluded. Judge
Emory iSjieer and United States Marshal
Corbett will arrive this morning from
Macon. United States District Attorney
Marion Erwin, who remained here during
the session of the grand jury, has been kept
busy, and some thirty or forty witnesses
have been examined.
RAIL AND CROSSTIS.
Pekin, China, is to be illuminated by
electric lights under a contract just made
with the Westinghouse company at Pitts
burg. In this country the electric light has
followed the railway, but in China it will
precede it, and the illumination will tend to
disperse the superstition which thus far has
prevented railway construction.
India has now 15,345 miles of railway, the
mileage having nearly doubled in ten years
and almost quadrupled in twenty years,
while thirty years ago It was only 630 miles.
Projects covering some 2,300 miles have
been ratified, and a more rapid rate of in
crease is likely to be seen. The average
capital expenditure thus far bas been about
$60,000 per mile. With its enormous area
and its dense population India furnishes
opportunity for a system of railways many
times larger than it now has, and the gov
ernment and capitalists of England evi
dently appreciate the possibilities.
A most remarkable engineering project
was suggested at the recent meeting of the
Iron and Steel Institute in Paris. It is
nothing less than the erection of a great
bridge between France and England, from
(.Ape Orisuez to Folkestone. An idea of
what is involved in this gigantic undertak
ing may be gathered from some estimates
prepared by the proposers of the project.
Ihe length of the bridge would be twenty
i"ur miles, the number of piers 130, the
headway for ships for 180 feet, and the
mght from the foundation to the top of the
structure 600 feet. It is proposed to build
bridge entirely of steel. To do this
i,000,000 tons of steel would be required,
snd the cost of the bridge, it is estimated,
would amount to about $175,000,000.

Advice to Mothers.
Mrs. Winblow's Soothing Syrup should
always be used when children are cutting
teeth. It relieves the little sufferer at once;
it produce* natural, quiet sleep by reliev
ing the child from pain, and the little cherub
awakes as “bright as a button.” It is very
pleasant to taste. It soothes the child, soft
ens the gums, allays all pain, relieves wind,
regulates the bowels, and is the best known
remedy for diarrhoea, whether arising from
teething <JC Other CBUMW, Ceiiti
