TO TREAT Q3 NOT TO TREAT.
Wow tie Question la Regard**! in New
York Clubs.
from the -Veto Yorlc Star.
Almost every club in New York has been
tt * of much discussion upon the ques
tion of treating, and in nearly all the cus
tom has been more or loss restricted by a
tacit understanding not embod.ed in any
hv-law or house rule. The code on this
subject is peculiar and somewhat compli
cated. There is probable more treating in
' young clubs than in the older ones, and
among young members than among the
ctxv beards.
h There is more treating in the cafe than in
the dining room, and in proportion to the
number of persons using the billiard room,
perhaps more there than in either of the
JJtbe-s. The House committee of a oom
naratively new but highly prosperous club
vas a little disturbed rece"ily to learn that
go T e members had pledged themselves
ceitner to treat nor accept treats in the
clubhouse. On the very evening that this
D es "'as announced one of the parties to
the egreement, formerly a conspicuous
politician, declined several invitations to
Sink at tbs expense of fellow members,
but finally yielded to imnortunity.
Another tarty to the agreement steadilv
declined every offer of hospitality, and.
when all about him were drinking at a fel
low member’s invitation, wrote his own
order for his own drink.
A prejudice against all-round treating in
clubs has arisen from two things—the
costliness of the custom to men of moderate
means, and the feeling that a social evening
should not be turned into a drinking bout.
At the same time, no House committee
locks with entire satisfaction upon an abso
lute anti-treating sentiment, because the
club bar is ordinarily a profitable institu
tion, and anything that tends to diminish
its p’r fits upsets the financial calculations
of club managers.
There is among club habitues a pretty
well established rule against treating at
dinner. The man who dines four nights
oat of seven at his club does not pay for the
wn.e or the dinner of the fellow member
who sits bis vis-a-vis, perhaps, three nights
out of the four. The rule is not absolute,
far it is not unusual for a birthday, or some
other anniversary, to be made the excuse
ter an extra bottle of wine by one of a
party who, for the time being, plats
host. The ordinary rule, however, is that,
each man shall pay for his dinper and wine,
just as if he were dining alone. Many an
old club habitue would as soon think of
paying for hi* fellow member’s coat as for
his” wine at dinner. In clubs serving ala
carte meals it is not uncommon for meu
who habitually dine together to taka turn
about in paying for the dinner. This in
sures some economy in ordering, and yet
avoids the obje tionabie features of treat
ing. The constant habit among naval
officers aboard ship of throwing dice to de
termine who shall pay for wine and cigars
is rare in well-regulated clubs.
Now and then, when a large group has
formed in a club cafe, someone asks every
body to drink at bis expense. It is a rare
thing, to find that every one accepts. Many
men have formed for themselves a rule to
decline when above four or five have
accepted, or when the company exceeds
half a dozen. It would be a group of very
young men, or of old and hardened
drinkers, that should continue drinking
round after round when the company num
bered as many as a dozen.
Barroom habits are distinctly disapproved
of In the best clubs. In any but a few po
li ical and flash clubs, the man who should
frequently order enough champagne for a
group gathered in the cafe would be
set down as a cad. The pop of the cham
pagne cork is not the constant music of
the well-regulated cafe. The distinguished
editor of a New York paper, presiding
late after a club election, while
the assembled members were awaiting
the election committee’s report, invited
everybody to drink, and everybody
accepted because the occasion was unusual.
Had the same roan offered such an invita
tion in ordinary circumstances, he would
have been met with stares of astonishment
and disapproval.
No well-trained club servant passes the
cigar basket ail around the room when a
member invites the men sitting im
mediately around him to smoke,
fcbould a servant make such a mistake,
the basket would probably pas3 un
touched. A great many men frown upon
the habit of declining to drink, but elect
ing to take a cigar instead. Tnese men in
sist that he who takes a cigar when asked
to drink might just as well sail for a sand
wich, or a necktie, or a corner lot. The
object of treating, they say, is not to give
something to the man who accepts
the proffered hospitality, but to show
good will and promote good-fellow
ship. This truth was weil illustrated by
a naval officer who had long been disgusted
with a shipmate’s willingness to drink and
smoke at the expense of others, without
mading adequate return. The usual invi
tation to smoke was accepted with alacrity,
and the sponge held out his hand to receive
the cigar, saying: “Thanks; I’ll smoke it
after awhile.’’ “No.” said the intending
host, “you’ll net. I don’t offer you cigars
to smoke after a while, but to smoke in mv
company,” and back went the cigar into
the owner’s pocket.
A habitue of one quiet club in New York
carries his anti treating convictions, or un
social instincts, to their logical conclusion.
He reaches the clubhouse about half an
hour before dinner, looking fierce and inac
cessible, with his gold-rimmed eve-glasses
ar.d great gray mustache. He reads
an evening paper for half an
hour, and then, seating himself
in tire dining room at a small table, care
fully chosen with reference to temperature
and draughts, drinks hi* pint of claret and
dines in solitary solemnity. He dallies
with coffee and cigar for half an hour after
dinner, and then is off, without having
spoken a word to any man, save his whis
pered commands to the waiter.

Is Friday an Unlucky Day?
More or less superstition attaches to the
sixth day of the week, and numerous are
the undertakings or ventures .that are post
poned to a more propitious ID day. Friday
is as good a day as any other in which to
inaugurate a quest for health, and P. P. P.
(Prickly Ash, Poke Root and Potassium) is
the very best weapon wit:: which to begin
n onslaught on disease. For all blood im
purities snch as are indicated by Rheuma
tism, Gout, Syphilis, Scrofula or eruption

remedy. For women suffering from loss of
fippatite, strength and vigor it is a splendid
tonic and remarkable In its results. All
druggists keep it.

SKIN CAAcLiL
Several years ago I was called to see a colored
woman who had a malignant form of cancer oa
her foot. The cancer grew worse under the pre
scribed treatment, and the toes and one side of
the foot were at length eaten entirely away. The
patient could not have survived much longer,
but I commenced the use of Swift's Specific,
and it cored her sound well. That was three
years ago, and there has been no return of the
disease. 1 regard Swift's Specific a most excel
lent medicine for blood diseases, as its tendency
is to drive out the poison.

CANCER OF THE TONGUE.
For three or four years I had an eating sore no
my tongue that made a considerable bole in it.
I became alarmed at its progress, and went to
Atlanta for treatment. Tbe result was that I
commenced the use of Swift's Specific, and th
sore was soon gone, without a trace of it left.
