ACTS LIKE! A CRAZY MAN.
The Mclntosh Mail Robber Believed to
be Insane.
John Dailey, indicted last week by the
grand jury of the United States circuit
court for stealing a United States mail bag
from the Mclntosh postoffioe, has had his
case set for trial next Thursday. W. R.
Leaken, Esq., has been appointed to defend
him.
Mr. Leaken had bis client brought to the
United States court roam yesterday after
noon for a consultation, and it is Mr.
l.eaken’s opinion that Dailey is insane, an 1
he believes the prisoner has escaped from
some asylum.
Very little satisfaction could be obtained
from Dailey, and the attorney’s patience
was quite exhausted, as he cjuld not get
him to understand the gravamen of the
indictment or the gravity of the offense
with which he is charged. Dailey could
only say that he is being wronged and that
it must all come right Ue imagines him
self to be a race horse, and he s lys ho has
made a mile iu 2:30 on the Cincinnati race
track. In more lucid intervals Dailey said
that his parents live in Norfolk, Vs.
Dailey was clad only in coat and panta
loons, and these were infested with parasites,
and these facts having been brought to the
attention of District Attornev Erwin by
Sir. Leaken, the former said he would
direct United States Marshal Corbett to
supply the prisoner vVith a suit of clothes.
Mr. Leaken will doubtless plead the insanitv
of his client as a bar to prosecution under
the indictment, a plea which, if reasonably
well taken, will not likely be resisted by
the government in attempting to force a
trial for the crime under the indictment.
A CONDUCTOR’S LAMENT.
The Daya that Street Car Travel is
Heaviest.
“Don’t know what’s the matter to-day,”
said a West Broad street car conductor
yesterday.
"’Taiu’t been such a dull day since I’ve
been in the service.”
The conductor said that Monday is one
of the busy days usually. Asa general
thing over 500 people are hauled to the car
on Mondays. The travel for the rost of the
week except Saturday does not begin to
come up to it. Saturday is the biggest day.
Six hundred people are hauled Saturdays.
People returning from market make the
travel heavy Saturdays. The heavy travel
ou Monday is caused by the washerwomen.
“It is their day,” the conductor said.
“They begin to crowd into the cars as early
as 9 o’ciock in the morning, and it is a rush
until 4or 5 o’clock in the afternoon. The
front platform is loaded down with baskets
full of soiled linen and we are glad when
the last trip has been made.”
The business on the West Broad street
line and the Belt line cars running out West
Broad and Montgomery srreots is heavier
than on any other lines. The greater num
ber of washerwomen live in the outskirts of
the city.
SCHOTTKY PLEAD3 GUILTY.
The Other Brunswick Counterfeiters
to Be Tried This Week.
In the United States circuit court yester
day, Charles Schottky plead guilty to the
charge of passing counterfeit money, and
the court reserved sentence.
Robert Moran, Janies McDonald, and
James Booth, indicted for a like offense,
were assigned counsel, Thomas S. Morgan,
Jr., being appointed to defend Moran and
Booth, aud W. R. Leaken was assigned as
counsel for McDonald.
The cases are set for trial on Thursday,
and Schottky’s wife, who is in Charleston,
has been sent for by District Attorney
Erwin, and other witnesses are to be
brought from Brunswick, Darien, and
Doboy, and from Fernandiua, Fla.
KAIL. AND CROSSTIS.
An extra freight train on the Central
railroad ran off the track at the 185 mile
l ost yesterday morning at 9:40 o’clock,
delaying the south-bound fast mail train
three hours. No serious damage was done.
No one was hurt.
A report of the officers of the Georgia,
Carolina and Northern shows that the bonds
are all sold and the money ready to complete
the road to Atlanta. Nine hundred thousand
dollars has been spent on the line. The con
tracts for grading have all been let to the
Savannah river from Monroe, N. C. The
headquarters will be moved to Athens by
Feb. 1.
The great Rhode Island mogul, one of the
largest engines in the service of the Atlan
tic Coast line, will arrive in the
city to-day or to-morrow for repairs.
This engine fell into the Ashepoo river
and Messrs. H. W. Crouch & Bro. were
awarded the contract for raising. The
weight of the engine and boiler, full of
water, was 162,000 pounds, and Crouch &
Bro. raised the enormous mass bodily out of
thirty-two feet of water and placed the
locomotive on the track wi bin seven
days from the time they commenced to
erect their derricks. Usually such heavy
lifts are made with the aid of hydrauhe
power aud consume a much longer time.

The Tribulations of Salesladies.
Possibly the hardest worked class in
America are the shop girls in our stores.
On their feet for long hours, the constant
strain soon enfeebles the body and brings
on that sallow, careworn look so frequently
seen in the faces of girls and women com
pelled to labor be iud counters for a sup
port. To such P. P. P. (Prickly Ash, Poke
Root aud Potassium) is a welcome remedy,
as it is a great natural tonic and invigorator
aDd brings back the color to pal a cheeks
and strength to tired limbs. It is the best
all round blood purifier, and if the blood is
pure aud clean the body must of a necessity
derive great benefit and ultimate vitality
and energy. P. P. P. cures all blood dis
eases, such as syphilis, rheumatism, gout,
scrofula, and is a foe to that great human
demoralizer dyspepsia. It can be obtained
of all medicine dealers and druggists.
