*" ,- ae Old U orld and from the Now, who
* ind that many changes have been
aie since the time of the last exhibition.
e old playhouse, waicii stood at the
rtiiern ena of the idyllic village, has been
n hated by a newer, larger and mor?
' 1 t structure. For tie first time in the
w ,-V of the Passion Play the theater is
’ , . i wi*h omplete stage machinery,
\ • . r U cted after the best modern fasuion,
,' vet true to tue traditions of that place.
4° immense s'ago i as been constructed and
led into several compartments.
0 jn front of t:e stage is a large platform,
on which move the great processions
which form so important a part of ttie
, n par back and in the center rises a
- - ircli, with a facade in the style of an j
Indent temple. Under this arch, running
still farther back, is the middle stage for
•hepresentation of the tableaux vivants.
tcis great arch is flankeil by two smaller
-rebe- one on each side, through each of
1 feii ch’the eye of the spectator looks bac.t
*‘,,Vwhat appears to be a street of old Je
"nj-fl.em. Commencing at the outside end
ox each of these smal'er arches, andcomiDg
round to the front of the stage, on the arc
of ii circle, are colonnades and buildings of
(irecian architecture. The buildings repre-
K tu the palaces of Pilate and the high
purst Annas, and the colonnades serve for
J,),, rect'pt ion of singers aud rabble.
Ibe slugs itself is open to the shv, with
the exception of the middle stage behind
ti e great arch, which is inclosed and cov
ered with a glass roof. Over the front of
the stage is thrown a huge proscenium
arch, bv means of which is secured a mag
nificent landscape effect. In former times
the effect of the play was greatly damaged
bv imperfect illumination on the stage.
A'.iw all the dark corners and the partly
translucent decorations will be illuminated
by artificial lights. Care has been taken to
tecur ‘ greater speed in changing the tab
leaux, and new machinery has been put up
f> r the ascension of Christ.
The financial condition of the Oberam
roergau community has not permitted th in
to rebuild entirely the main body of the
theater; but an extension has been planned
which will provide for the accommodation
of some 5,000 spectators. The royal boxes
and an especial’box for distinguished guests,
with vestibules and conveniences, together
with about 1,500 of the seats, are roofed
over; the rest of the seats, lying next the
stage, are in the open air. The entire
tbiater covers an area of 3,300 square
iru-Urs, half of which is allotted to the stage
anil half to the auditorium.
It was the custom in former times to de
fray the expenses from the receipts, with
settlement ufter the close of the season, but
the Bavarian government has now required
from tiie town authorities a definite plan
providing for the payment of the debt in
curred. In 18S0 the town government was
uuahieto find a bank in Bavaria which
would advance the necessaiy funds, al
th> ugh its members were individually
liable. After a long search the Alsatian
Bank in Strasburg was induce to advance
the money. The town offered its forest as
security, but the pledge was not accepted.
A bank in Munich lias advanced the funds
f r 1890. From 12,0U0 to 14,000 marks have
been expended for new costumes, which
must be made of good and genuine material,
for daylight makes the use of tinsel and
cheap fabrics impossible. The costumes,
too, have been improved to correspond
to the improvement iu the new decora
tions.
The election for the players took place
late in the autumn of last year. Joseph
Mayr, who takes the part of Christ, declared
himself ready to undertake again his ex
acting role. The election always creates
greater excitement in the village than do
those for the German Reichstag or the Ba
varian Landtag.
Rehearsals are going on now. In good
weather they are neld on a little stage, built
for tiie purpose near the theater; in bad
weather they are conducted in a room of
the new Inn Wittell acher Hof. It is in
-1 ended to enlarge the orchestra. In respect
of the text of the play there exists at
present in the ruling circles of Oberammer
gau some difference of opinion. Strangers
have suggested changes, but the prevailing
sentiment among the local artists seems to
lie that no alterations should be made in
arrangements which time and success have
justified.
The construction of the new playhouse,
decorations, machinery aud adjoining build
ings has been accomplished under the
supervision of Earl Lautenschlageh, the
chief engineer of the Court theater in
Munich, a man of great distinction in his
especial vocation, who has been called to
uil the principal theaters of Europe, not
excepting the great opera house in Paris.
SENATOR BRICS’3 FORTUNE TOLD.
Assured, When a Poor Young Lawyer,
He Would Becomo a Millionaire.
From the Philadelphia Press.
Findlay, 0., Jan. 19.—As Senator Cal
vin S. Brice is now a national character,
stories regarding his early life, when he was
a poor, briefless lawyer, struggling for an
existence in Lima, are of interest. The fol
lowing is related by a gentleman of this
city who was a schoolmate of Senator
Brice:
At a party given at the residence of Judge
Hughes, in Lima, which was attended by
Mr. Brice, a young lady amused the com
pany by telling their fortunes, which she
dully pretending to read the lines in the
hand. When it came Mr. Brice’s turn to
see what the future had in store for him,
tee fair astrologist said:
“Mr. Brice, before you are tan years
older you will be a milliouaire.”
The prediction was accepted in the spirit
in which made—that of a pleasant jest—bu t
Mr. Brice replied : “If what you predict
comes true, I will buy you the finest dia
mond ring I can procure with SI,OOO.
Laughing the lady answered: “Be sure
you don’t forget your promise,” and the
matter was dropped without any further
thought.
In lass than eight years from that time
Mr, Brice was, indeed, a millionaire, bu t he
dul not forget the lady who had so cleverly
predicted his future. He bought in New
York a superb diamond ring for the fair
ortune-teiler, which sho shows with pride
as she relates how she came by it.
