NO GROUND HOG DAY THIS Y2AR.

-ullford, re... 2.— To-day, according to
all tra iiti >n and precedent, sh uid l.ave
* ground hog day, and the Dike county
backwoodsman are iu a painful Quandary.
Fo in tbe days of their remotest ancestors
they have believed in the well-known su
pers.itiou that the ground hog is an unfail
ing prognosticator for the rest <,f the winter,
by waking up from the sound sle*p be lias
been indulging iu for three months iu the
depths of uis cosy burrow, ami coming to
t e surface to tane a long look around on
the. outside, where, if he did not see h s
shadow, he remained, but which i e
instantly abandoned for the inside
again if his shadow showed u: .
The former action of tho gr und hog imai.t
tnat the remanding weeks of winter would
be mild, whilo the latter indicated inevit
able cold and genuine old wintry weather
for weeks longer. But ground hog day,
INK), is a puzzler to tho woodsmen, lor the
ground hog has not been asleep in his ho’e
tuis winter, and consequently can’t wake un
and come out and be a weather propter.
The ground hog saw no reason wav ho
sh >uld be stowed away a fath nn or so under
the ground while dandelions kept right on
blooming, and clover W'as greon aud juicv,
and people were bobbi.ig for catfish instead
of fishing for pickerel through the ice. So
he has been out in the fields almost daily
ever since winter began. Fat and lively
ground hogs have been killed in Novem
ber, December, and January, something
never known before. In Pike county the
year 189 J will have to go on record as the
only one in history that had no ground hog

‘' Wat be we a cornin’ to, anyhow?” an

without a summer, but w’at’s that ’longside

A NUN’S ROMANCE.
She Flopes With a Young Man Who
was to Have Married Her Sister.
From the Xetc York Sun.
San Francisco, Feb. 2.—A romantic
story of the elopement aud marriage of a
nun from Notre Duma college, in this city,
has just come to light. Sister Margaret
Mary was the name which Cora La Taa
nuno assumed two years ago, when she took
the black veil and became a teao.er in
Notre Dame college, which is opposite t e
oid mission Dolores church in the suburbs.
Her father is a French florist, and she has
two sisters, one manned.
The unmarried sister, Berthe, was re
cently engaged to Charles Perkins, an iron
moulder. Berthe and her betrothed paid
sevei al visits to Cora, and young Perkins
seemed greatly struck with the nun.
Berthe noticed his infatuation, and they
quarreled on the day the three went ro
goti er to inspect tho new house widen
Perkins was furnishing for ins intended
bride. Berthe’s jealousy flamed out, and
sue asked him to decide between them. He
chose the nun, and the younger sister ac
quiesced.
One stormy night two weeks arc the oon
vont sisters found that Marg -.ret Mary had
disappeared. They could get no clue to
her, but last night she was found in the new
cottage with her husband. From his story
and that of the sister it seems Cora obtained
a dispensation from the Mother Sunerior
releasing her from her vows, at and also one
from the archbishop. They kept her secret.
They were ma ried, and after tt bri -f honey
moon returned to the house that had been
furuishedjforthe youu ;r sisteer. Berthe does
not seem tomiua her f .iluro to get married.
She says it was better to givo up her lover
than to make two people wretched.

Cured by CisSicura
Our oldest child, now six years of age. vchen
an infant six months old, was attacked with a
virulent, malignant skin disease. All ordinary
remedies failing, we called our family physician,
who attempted to cure ir; but it spread with
almost incredible rapidity, until the lower por
tion of the little fellow’s person, from the mid
die of his back down to his knees, was one
solid rash, ugly, painful, blotched and ma
licious. We had no rest at night, no peace
by day. finally, we were advised to try the C'uti
ctra Remedies. The effect was simply marve
lous. in three or four weeks a conmlete
cure was wrought, leaving the little fellow s per
son as white and healthy as though he bad never
been attackeff. I” my opinion, your valuable
remedies saved his life, and to-davhe is a strong,
healthy child, perfectly well, no repetition of
the disease having ever occurred.

Coy Covered with scabs
My boy, aged nine years, has been troubled
ail his life with a very bad humor, winch ap
peared all over his body in small red blotches,
with a dry white scab on them. Last vear ho
was worse than ever, being covered with scabs
from the top of his head to his feet, and con
tinually growing worse, although he had been
treated by two physicians. Asa last reso: t I
determined to try the ('rncm Remedies, and
am happy to say they did all that I could wish.
Using them according to directions, the humor
rapidly disappeared, leaving the skin lair and
smooth, and performing a thorough cure. Toe
Rcticdba Remedies are all you claim for them.
They are worth their weight in gold to any one
troubled as uiy boy was.
