AT TH3 COURTS. Gossip Pioial Up Haps and Thare In t:ia Court Rooms. The session of the superior oourt was taken up yesterday and to a late hour last ilight in the consideration of two appeal cases from the justice’ courts. The flrst "ase was a suit between two old fishermen, D. A. Mooney and John Roe. Mocney sued Roe for SB6 for repairs to nets, boa:, etc., and got judgment in Justice Reynold’s oourt for ssl, nut as the case was heard by the trial magistrate outs do of his district, a second trial was had in the proper district and judgment -iven Mooney by default for the full anu.uut claimed. Roe appealed on the ground that the finding was excessive, ar.dtha jury yesterday found for plaintiff for only $lO. Roe claimed that Mooney was not to charge for Ins wi rk, but they helped each other to rig up their outfit for partnership fishing. The other case was that of Cox vs. Smith, appealed from Jus tice Russeli’s court. This was a suit on a note for SIOO, judgment being given for the defendant in the trial court below. The jury last night was instructed to bring in a sealed verdict. In the city court yesterday morning there were ten arraignments. In the case of ejimon Miller, charged "iththe larceny of a coat and vest from Frank Murphy, the court sa.d that the evidence indicate ! that the offense, if any, is larceny alter trust, aud he ordered the defendant rec mi milted to answer in the superior court for the greater offense. Albert Wallace and Ben Robinson, for carrying concealed wen.uons, were fined $25 or two months each. Henry Cotton, who carried off a pair of ~hoes'from Tuberdy’s, was sentenced to six months on the cliain-gai g. Dolly’ Styles was acquitted of the charge of stabbing Ohloe Garrett, but convicted of stabbing William Garrett, and fined $25 or three months. Edwin Davis was giveu six mouths for the larceny of a coat aud vost, the property of Robert H. Governor. J. C. Hawkins was permit ed to settle Jie costs on a charge of wife-beating. He was Che one whom Justice Endres had so much trouble with on a West Broad street car last Saturday night. There will be uo session of the city court to-day. The civil calendar c&sas wiil be sounded to-morrow, and on Friday the grand jury w id convene at 4 o’clock p. m. The grand jury of ihi superior court will be in session vo-morrow afternoon, conven ing at 4 o’clock. C. H. McGillis was reappointed a com mercial notary public by Judge Falligant yesterday. Justice Russell had a field day yesterday. He committed Grant Bacon to jail to an swer iu the superior court for burglary. Bacon was caught iu the act of ransacking the premises of Joseph Golden, at the Coast Line junction, Sunday morning. Christian Halm gave bond on two charges, one for carry ing concealed weapons and the other for pointing a pistol at C. M. Emo. Justice Russell committed Allen Brooks to jail on a warrant for an assault and bat tery upon one Estelle Jack-ion. A colored woman went on Brooks’ bond some time ago and Brooks skipped out, but Officer Humphries caught nim at Augusta and brought him back. George Parker, the colored saloon keeper who was held in jail here for the unlawful sale of liquor in Americus, was released on bond a tew days ago. He returned to Americus, and has succeeded in placing a criminal charge against each of the negroes who prosecuted him. Parker is state’s wit ness in each case. He is regarded highly in Americus by the better class of color, and peo ple, but he has made himseif very unpopular there by informing on the criminals. Deputy Jailor Strickland said that Parker conducted him: elf ali right in jail in Sa vannah. The Purse-McAlpin case, which was set for a healing in Magistrate Davidson’s court yesterday, was postponed, owing tithe absence of J. K. Sarnsy, Esq., ccuusel for the defense. The civil action of forcible entry and detainer was brought by Capt. J. W. McAlpin against D. G. Purse and J. C. Rowland immediately after the defendants tore down some houses at Reiv Deptford, erected by Capt. McAlpin. The houses were put up the first week in February. The suit was made returnable to the court in which the lauds lie, which is the Fifth district. The only facts wmeh were to have been tried, and which will tin tried on March 25, are the questions of possession and forcible entry, and detainer. The question of title will not coma up. “PBNNSY’d” PRE3ID JNT SOUTH. Mr. Roberts and His Party to Stop Here on Iboir Way Back North. President George B. Roberts of the Penn sylvania railroad, accompanied by his wife and daughter, Superintendent of Transpor tation S. M. Provost and wife, and Mrs. Wyatt, and President John Hoey of the Adams Express Company passed through Savannah yesterday alternoon on the Flor ida special en route to Florida, to spend a week. They were unable to stop over here, as they anticipated, but th 6 probability is that both parties will stop on their return. President Roberts and party traveled in the president’s private ear, and President Hcey and party traveled in another special car. The parties were met at the depot by some of the officials of the Savannah, Flor ida and Western railway, who urged them to stop over a short time, but President Rob erts said that his plans, he was sorry to say, had been made so that they could not well stop then. He expressed a desire to see Sa vannah, and hoped that upoa the return of the party north a day may be spent here. The parties were entertained in Charles ton Sunday where the day was spent. President Robert! was loud in bis praise of the south, and he took occasion to compli ment the Atlantic Coast Line, Savannah’s great route to the north. He said: -‘ln my judgmont, i. compares favorably with any road in my knowledge. The management siiouid certainly bo complimented on the good work which it has done in the past few years.” In a short conversation with President Roberts yesterday, ho prononneed the rumurs that the PonnsylVa ia Railroad thought of scooopin' the Atlantic Coast Line groundless. “Ho such thing is in my head,” he said. Ho said that he came south to rest, and his presence is in no wise con nected with these rumors. At 2 o'clock the party left for St. Augus tine, and will probably visit Tainpa before returning. J. F. It is said that the Carolina Yacht Club will par ticipate in the regatta by urgent invitation. The club proposes to build an extended and elaborate bath house on the point just north of the club house at Thunderbolt. It is to be octagonal in srape, a.id will be fitted up with thejraost elegant finishings and furnishings. It u expected to be completed by May 1. How the Eden Extension Will In crease Savanuah’s Trade. Referring to the influence on the trade of Savannah by the Savannah and Western, a gentleman from Tattnall said yesterday that it will ba mutually beneficial to the city and the people of his section. The gentleman said that much of the products of that section has been carted to Savannah at a loss of time, and at great expense to the farmers. This will all come hereafter by rail. Tattnall and adjoining counties are in a rich agricultural and dairy country, and will supply large quantities of pork, beef, poultry," butter, eggs, fruit, syrup and melons, potatoes and cotton. Naval stores and lumber will he shipped largely in the future, und already the re ceipts of naval stores have been large. At least twelve distileriei will be located between Eden junction and Sterling. The product of these distileries will ave age GOO barrels of spirits rosin, increasing Savannah’s naval stores receipts that much. Tne lumber cut in the virgin forests tributary to the Savannah and Western will be heavy, and new san-mids are g.ii g up, aud others will be put up in the heavily timbered section through which the road is projected. , The connections westward will be feeders to the new road, and a large iu crea-e in the Central’s cotton receipts by the Savannah and Western is predicted for next season. The great delay in the road’s completion has teen due largely to the failure to get bridge timbers and crossties, but the work is now progressing more favorably, and when the road is completed to Sterling Col. Hawkins’ forces will be employed by the Central to aid in the.Central's portion of the construction, aud track-laying, it is thought, will be pushed at both ends of the line to close up the gap. EXPECTED SOME TIME TO-DAY. The Bostons and New Yorks to be Here Two Weeks Instead of One. The Nacoochee is expected in port this morning with the ball players. The two teams of the brotherhood league, the New Yorks and Bostons, compose the players, and William Ewi.ig of the New York team, who came by rail, said'yesterday that he thinks the clubs will remain here two w eeks instead of one. Ewing paid a visit to the ball park yes terday, and expressed astonishment to find it in such good condition. He said that it is in first-ciass order, and will afford an excellent ground for practice. It is under stood that there will not be an exhibition game this afternoon, although the players, if they gat in in time, may limber up by a little practice tor the games to be played daily thereafter. The teams will make their headquarters at the De Ho to, and O’Day, Slattery, Whitney, Griffin aud Quinn ave there now, having come by rail from different parts of the country. Ewing is stopping with his wife's people at No. 15 Zublv street. John Irwin of the Buffalo Players’ League, with his wife and child, is at tne Screven, and John wiil ba au interested spectator at the initial games between New York and Boston. In an interview with O’Day last night, he said that Savannah has grown rapidly since he piayed bail here in 1880. Ha expects the lovers of the national game will see some fine games between the two team i while they are here.
