ECHOES FROM EFFINGHAM.
Bprir.gfleld. Marlow and Guvton Notes
and News.
Mr. & T. Courvoisie, agent of the Pori
Jtoyal and Augusta at the former plaea,
Who resided at Marlow and was connected
■with the Central railroad some time since,
hns disposed of his Marlow residence to Mr.
I_ Eiley, who will move up at an early
day to superintend te person tae construc
tion of several houses which lie proposes
to erect. The people of Marlow aro
very much elated over securing
Mr. Exley's preseuce a id influence to aid
them in building up the vacant lots of that
delightfully situated town. Mr. Exley is
largely interested m Guyton, and the people
regret very much that he did not buil 1 and
locate at Guyton.
Since the town of Guyton has bad the
tram road which ran through thp place taken
U p Mr. C. W. Shearouse, one of Eilinghain’s
nidi men, has moved up and established
a flourishing mill near Guytou on the
Springfield road, so as to be in position to
supply the local demand for lumber. Mr. L>.
G. Heidt keeps a line of wago is constantly
on the road t > haul the products of this mill
which has allayed the fears of those who
favored the retention of the trail road to
give Guyton her lumber supply. If reports
tie true, quite a number will locate and
build at Guyton this spring and summer.
The people of Springfield do not intend
that the South Bound railroad shall give
that delightful sanitarium the go by with
cut making a fight for it. Strongly forti
fied with that view that have resurrected
the survey made by Col. Fry’s engineer
corps which shows the distance starti:g
from Judge Pittman's reside .ce in Spring
geld to Savam ah to be 23 4-9 miles, and to
add the distance from Springfield
to Sisters' Ferry the place selected
to cross the Savannah river,
■will add eight milts more, making the total
distance from Savannah to Sisters’ Ferry
SO 4-9 miles. The people of Springfield
claim that this is the shortest line and by
far the most economical and most desirable
route; besides, they will have on the lino of
the new road a place of historical interest
and delightfully situated for suburban
homes and summer resort.
The protracted meeting which has been in
progress since Sunday last lias been well
attended, and the pastor, Rev. J. E. Wray,
feels encouraged to continue it awhile
longer. He has been assisted during the
last week by Rev. T. T. Christian, presiding
elder, Rev. T. D. Strong of the Springfie ii
circuit, Rav. J. C. Grimes of the E lea cir
cuit. and Rev. Mr. Morgan of Guyton.
While but few have sought conversion, a
deep and earnest feeling pervades the
church-goers.
It is said M. E. Robinson, with Rosen
heim & Cos., contemplates locating at Guy
ton.
Leonard Scott, a wealthy citizen of New
York, is at Guytou for his health.
J. F. Stone, traveling agent for the
Morning News, was circulating among
his Guyton friends Friday.;
Mr. Thomas F. Colcock, of Ocala, Fla.,
has been visiting the family of Capt. T. F.
Stubbs.
Dannie Arden, one of tha cleverest en
gineers oil the Central, now runs the Guy
ton dinner train and the evening ve-tibule.
Col. Morgan Rawls left Saturday for a
trip to Iteidsville over the Savannah and
Western.
The depot and warehouse at the junction
of the Savannah and Western and Central
is looming up, and will soon bo completed.
RAIL AND CROSSriiS.
The vestibule train will be discontinued
this week. The last train north arrived in
New York last night.
The Savannah, Florida and Western and
Charleston and Savannah Employes’
Mutual Relief Association meets tomorrow
night. Important changes iu the by-laws
are to be made.
A Covington dispatch says that Covington
turned out almost on masse to see the Mid
dle Georgia and Atlantic contractors “break
dirt” there. C l. Machon expects to extend
the road on to Atla ita, or connect it wit t
some other road jusf as soon as it i3 com
pleted that far.
The Fort Valley Enterprise says: "The
case against the subscribers to the Atlanta
and Florida railroad stock, who refused to
pay their subscription, will come up next
week iu Perry. The case will tie hard fought
on both sides, but owing to the non-com
pliance of the contract and the change of
name from the Atlanta and ilawkinsville to
Atlanta and Florida railroad, besides ina iv
other things, the subscribers think they will
gain their cases, and even if they appeal,
the supreme court will affirm the judgment
of the lower court. The case will attract
considerable interest and be closely
watched.”
Brunswick is figuring on another rail
road. A special from Tallahassee, Fla, to
the Brunswick Times says that the officials
of the Florida Central and Peninsular Rail
road Company aro seriously considering the
building of a northern extension of their
system. It will take in Brunswick, and
wifi follow along the coast to Havannah,
there to connect witii the South Bound and
other lines leading direct to the north anil
cast. For several davs past the officials’
private car of the Florida Central and
Peninsular has been in Bruu wick The
officials and directors of that Lne have
been here looking at Brunswick, and it
is thought that they were making a rough
survey of the proposed extension. The car
left Brunswick Wednesday for Savannah
and northern points. The pc posed exten
sion starts either at Fernundina or Hart’s
road, ten miles away, running by St.
Mary’s to Brunswick. Leaving Brunswick
the route goes by Darien and along the coast
to Savannah. If this route should bo built
it would greatly benefit Brunswick from
either direction. It would give a short line
to all parts of Florida, also a short line to
Savannah and the north.

The Neca went to sea yesterday after

SECURED AN HEIR.
An Allegheny Woman Will Now
Claim a Fortune iu England.
From the Pittsburg Leader.
The department of public charities of
this city has developed a story so strangely
romantic? in all of its details, that although
true it every particular, it would, if elabo
rate*.' upon, make a highly colored novel,
for it is undoubtedly sensational enough to
answer all purpose
Although the finale of this story was onlv
reached yesterday, the cireumstauces upon
which theopeniug chapter is built, occurred
a little more than a week ago.
About that period a w< man, who was
Prepossessing in appearance, stylishly at
tired and an intelligent conversationalist,
called upon Chief Elliott and asked if there
was an infant under 1 year of age at the
City Home which could be giveu into her
care for adoption. She was turned over to
Georgi Hoffman, who has charge of such
matters, for examination, and under his
cl sa questioning acted mysteriously aud
became much confused. Finally, after
having heen convinc al that her cise would
lethorougnly investigate and would re
ceive no consideration unless she told the
truth, she related the story below. She first
exacted a promise that her name would bo
kept secret, and as the officials of the de
partment of charities will not betray her
confidence she must bo known to the reader
as Mrs. Mary Thompson, for the reason that
this was not. her name, and the nearest ap
proach to the location of her residence must
be the statement (which is true) that she
lives on a certain 3treet between Cedar and
Madison avenues in the Third Ward, Alle
gheny City.
“I will tell you the truth,” sho said. “Six
pears ago I was married in England, a id,
as my husband’s family objected to the
union, we eloped, coming directly to the
United States. We resided f r a lime in
Now York, but finally came to Fit'sburg,
and about throe years bef ore my husband’ -
death, which took place six mouths ago, we
took up our residedeein Allegheny. Now, I
will t-il you why I want the child. My hus
band’s father, who has died since our mar
riage, was a wealthy mnn, and in his wifi ho
provided that ail, ftfi the greater portion of
bis money should goto our child or chil
dren, but that 1 should not receive one
farthing. Well, we have never had any
children and- -s- V,
“O, I see,” siid Mr. Hoffman, “you want
us to furnish you with au heir.”
“Yes.”
“But supposing we should consent to
do so, you would have to furnish some
proof.”
“I have that all fixed,” she replied. “I
have engaged two physicians, who will
furnish tne required certificate.”
As the department of charities is not en
gaged in the heir furnishing line of busi
ness Mr. Hoffman declined to be a party
to the contract, but told her ho would inves
tigate. He did so for the purpose of satis
fying his curiosity, and on going to the
number knd street in Allegheny that had
been designated, discovered that not only
the name and address she had given him
were correct, but that a few days after
their talk the lady hud succeeded in procur
ing an infant five weeks old, a fine, healthv
looking cherub, to which she pointed with
much pride and sati faction, and stared
that within a short time she would be pre
pared to go to England and pro: eat her
much wanted heir.
Tho Pig-tail Sridegrcom.
FYom the Columbus (On.) Enquirer-Sun.
The question has boon raised, and is the
subject of sime discussion in Savannah,
whether a Chinaman should be permitted to
marry a white woman. The discussion it
the outcome of the recant sonsational mar
riage between a Savannah celestial and a
white female in Augusta. The intermar
riage of Cninatnen and white women in the
United States is not uncommon, especially
in the northern and western states,
aud it is an interesting fact that
the marriage of Chinamen witii colored
women is almost as common. The mis
cegenation laws which exist in the sou hern
states do not apply to the Chinamen, and so
Pig Tail is left occupying a peculiar posi
tion on the matrimonial field. Ha is abso
lutely unrestricted, in any legal sense, in
the choice of a mate, and he may marry a
white female or a black female, as his pref
erence may lead him—the female consent
ing.
While there is no local interest iu the
question here, ax there is in Savannah and
Augusta, the Enquirer-Sun, upon reflec
tion. inclines to tne opinion t:iat the Geor
gia legislature should take Joan Washee in
hand, and define exactly his matrimonial
status. It should declare in terms
whether he is such a person of color as
may not lawfully marry a white female, or
that be is to all intents and purposes a
white man, who is forbidden such a mesalli
ance as taking unto himself a black rib.
However, tho probability is that cotigress,
at its present pace in the direction of Chi
nese exclusion, will not leave enough pig
tails here to make it worth the while of the
legislature to pass on the question.

the roofs of our office, storerooms aud pattern
shops were painted with your Rubber Roof Paint
last August, has given perfect satisfaction and
came tar beyond my expect .lions, and I think
your paint merits all you claim for it. Tit so
roofs are covered with corrugated irou, which
was rust-eaten and perforated, and I did not
think it wn* Possible for any paint to stop the
leaks, but i find that your Rubber Roof Paint
did the work to my entire sati dactiou. Yours
