TEE HERMIT’3 QUEER PROPHECY
Some Portions of It Hava Already Been
Remarkably Fulfilled.
From the Nashville American.
In August, 1857, the Bavarian AUgemeine
Zeitung printed a remarkable prophecy
which bad been mads by an old hermit
many years before.
In it the rise of Napoleon IIL was clearly
outlined, as was also the Austro-Prussian
and the Franco-Russian wars and
the commune of Paris. He told
how the death of Pope Pius would occur in
1876 or 1877, and how it would be followed
by a Turku- Russian war. being but slightly
wrong in either prediction.
He said that Germany would have three
emperors in or:e year before the end of the
century, which was verified to the letter.
He missed it one, at least, in the number of
United States Presidents that were to die
by assassination, which was remarkably
close, to say the least.
He’said that when the twentieth century
opened, Manhattan Island and the whole of
York city would he submerged in the
waters of the Hudson, East river and the
bav; Cuba will break in two, and the west
half'and the city of Havana find a watery
resting place.
Florida and Lower California will break
loose from the mainland and carry their
load of human freight to the bottom of the
sea.
Tt e twenty-fifth is to be the last of the
United States Presidents, and Ireland is to
be a kingdom and England a republic by
the end of the century.
The United States is to be divided, and
San Francisco, Salt Lake City, New Or
leaus, St. Louis, Washington and Boston
are t" be made capitals. There should be
some consolation to the Mormons in this, if
not for the other parts of our great union.
To return to Europe: The end of the
century will not find either Italy or France
upon the maps, and Berlin will have been
totally destroyed by an earthquake.
Curious Chinese Habits.
From the Society Times.
When a Chinaman desires a visitor to
dine with him he does not ask him to do so,
but when he does not wish him te ?tay he
puts the questton:
“O, won’t you stay and dine with me,
please !”
The visitor will then know he is not
wanted. When a Chinaman expects a
present and it does not come he sends one
of lesser value.
A rich man’s servant gets no salary, yet
many are the applicants, while big salaries
are paid to the servants of the common
people, but few make applications. The
perquisites of the former often more than
triple the salaries of the latter, which is the
sole reason of these differences. To encour
age honesty and sincerity, confidential
clerks and salesmen in all branches of in
dustry receive an annual net percentage of
the tirqi's business, besides their regular
salary. The highest ambition of a Cniua
man is to have a nice coffin and a flue
funeral.
In China one can always borrow money
on the strength of having a son, but nobody
would advance him a cent if he had a dor >n
daughters. The former is responsible fur
the debt of his father for threo generations.
The latter is only responsible for the debts
of her own husband.
When a Chinaman meets another he
shakes and squeezes his own hands, and
covers his head. If great friends have not
seen each other for a long time they would
rub shoulders until they got tired. Instead
of asking each other’s health they would
say: “How is your stomach?” or “Have
}•■ >u eaten your rice?” “How old are you?”
“How much do you pay for your sandals?”
Men wear long petticoats and curry fans,
while tho women wear short jaokets and
carry canes. Boats are drawn by horses,
carriages move by sails. ' Old men play ball
and fly kites, while children fold their arms
and look on. Old women, instead of the
young, are the idols of society. Love mak
ing is only done three days before mar
riage. It is not only considered the safest
way to get ahead of a rival, but the surest
way to get a wife without losing much
time. A previous acquaintance between
the male and fenisle prevents them from
marriage. For this reason a man seldom
weds a girl of his town. If a Chinaman
desires the death of an enemy, he goes and
hangs himself upon that enemy’s door. It
is considered a sure way to kill, not only
that particular enemy, but members of his
entire family will be in jeopardy of losing
their lives.
