A HARD ONE TO HANDLE.
Officer Smith’s Lively Experience
’With a Bounder from Florida.
W. T. Manning, a white man of very
small stature, who eavj he is from Florida,
where bip-Tls and ‘gators thrive all winter t
was arrested last night near the Pulaski
house by Officer Smith as a nuisance gen
erally.
Manning, who wa3 coatless, and very near
shoeless, had imbibed just enough to make
him feel ‘’jolly,” and as a first step iu the
wrong direction, he walked up to a group of
gentlemen near the Screven house and
endeavored to make himself known.
His attempts to make friends with total
strangers was unsuccessful, and he walked
across Bull street, near Congress, where
Officer Smith was standing, and asked the
policeman the direction of Bay street. The
exchange was pointed out to him by the
officer, and the inquisitive man from the
clay hills of Florida started through
Johnson square. A young lady was going
in the same direction, and as she passed
Manning he accosted her.
Poiicetnau Smith was watching Manning,
and was in the act of going after him when
a gentleman who was pas-ing called to the
officer. After some difficulty the officer
succeeded in getting Manning to Congress
street lane arid th- re he refused to go any
further. The ambulance was telephoned
for, and during the interim Manning drew a
big crowd by his boisterous talking.
Manning saw the policeman coming and
.started off, but Officer Smith overhauled
him. Manning got i- uignant when told that
he was under arrest. The neighborhood of
Johnson square was blue with theanathemas
hurled by Manning on the l ead of the po
liceman. “I’m a gentleman,” said Manning
in an exasperated tone to the police
man, “and you are not.” The
crowd, which was getting thicker,
laughed, and Manning mistook it for an en
couragement to go on, and he did so. As
the "Black Maria” moved off a sympathiser
with the policeman said: “Hit him with
the club, Smith, if he makes any more noise.”
The policeman had an exciting time w ith
the prisoner on the way to the barracks, but
a more exciting one occurred when he was
taking Manning down the steps from the
sergeant’s office to a celL Manning attempted
to throw the officer down the stone step3,
but did not succeed,. and the gentleman
from Florida with the bifurcated whiskers
was safely lqckod in a cell, where, histori
cally speaking, "ho made Rome howl.”
POOLER’S NEWS BUDGET.
The Day’s Happenings In the Lively
Little Town.
• The Central railroad authorities are pre
faring the ground for a flower garden at
’ooler station. When the “umbrella shed”
is erected it will be near the garden.
The two-story brick residence being
erected by Thomas August on Collins street
is nearing completion. The building will
be quite au addition to Pooler.
Joseph Forehand on Rogers street Is hav
ing an'addition put to his house, which will
be finished in a few days.
Rumor has it that the “umbrella shod,’’
which General Manager Gabbett has
promised to build, w ill only be able to
accommodate ten to fifteen people at a time.
This is evidently incorrect, as the “goober”
train carries not less than thirty-five to
forty passengers every morning, and in case
of rain a small shed would not accomm >date
that number. General Manager Gabbett
will no doubt look into the matter before
deciding upon the sze of the “umbrella.”
Last Sunday’s Mohning News made it
appear as though the rifle club had changed
the date of its anniversary celebration
from May Ito May 12. The club will as
semble at 8 o’clock "a. m., on May 1, and
march to the shooting range where the con
tests will take place. The club’s gold
medal was receives! yesterday, and is on ex
hibition at Sternberg’s. At the drill Friday
evening the boys were instructed by two
active members of tbe Savannah Cadets,
who are also on the active member list of
the club. The ladies are preparing to help
the club get up the luncheon which will be
served day and availing.
Dr. W. X. Bleakney, and Mrs. William
Harrison, who went on the excursion to
Florida last week, returned Friday night.
Mrs. Bleakney, who has boon in St. Augus
tine during the past month for the benefit
of her health, returned with' the doctor
much improved.
AFTER CHINA WARE.
▲ Thief Breaks Into Allen & Co.’s
Store on Barnard Street.
A bold robbery was committed yesterday
morning between 12 and 3 o’clock at Bar
nard and State streets. The large plate
glass window of George W. Allen & Co.’s
crockery store fronting State street
was shattered with a brick, and an
opening was made large enough for
a person to put his hand in. At 2
o’clock the policeman patroling that
beat passed and discovered the shat
tered glass. Ho notified Mr. Allen, and it
was found that a $25 tea set was missing,ar.d
between SSO and S6O worth of china was
found broken ud in the showcase where the
brick crashedjthrougn. There is no clue to
the thief. The electric light in the square
shone directly against the window, and the
place was as light as day.
Near the tea set that was taken was a
show case containing S4OO worthjof solid sil
ver, which was not touched.
The officer passed at 12 o’clock on his
patrol and the window, he is positive, was
all right then. He discovered the broken
glass two hours later on his return, and the
thief must have got in his work between 1
and 2 o’clock.
AT THE COURTS.
Gossip Picked Up Here and There in
the Court Rooms.

the superior court yesterday.
Daniel Small (colored) was turned over to
the city court yesterday morning by the
mayor charged with the larceny of shoes
from the steamship City of Augusta, the
stolen property belonging to one of the fire
