SXBONQEr. THAN DYNAMITE.
Satisfactory Exporiments with Em
meneite and Gelbite.
From the Pittsburg Dispatch.
A speci li train pulled out froni the union
depot yesterday morning with a number ot
contractors on board. The party was bound
for baker's station, on the Ligonier Valley
road, to witness an exhibition of the won
derful explosive, emmensite, given by Gar
l*iid. Powell & Cos., at the quarries of Booth
& Flinn.
After the party arrived and divest* and
themselves of their outer garments,
previous to asceuding the mountain—for the
§ay was terribly hot —and after some exer
tion the bill was at last sue-essfully as
cended, the party sought the shade of the
trees and listened to Dr. Emmons’ son ex
ri.am the good qualities of the explosive.
He gave several tests to prove that the
powder would not be exploded by concus
sion * r heat.
About an ounce of powder was placed on
a shovel and a match applied to it. There
was no explosion, as some expected, but the
powder began to bum very slowly, and
continued to burn while fire was put to it,
but immediately went out after the match
was withdrawn. Mr. Emmeus then put an
ounce of the powder on a piece of iron and
struck it several blows in succession, which
bad no ef tel on the powder. He then
placed for* sticks of tbe emmensite against
a tree and fired a rifla at it. The ball pene
t rated the powder, bat did not explode, to
the amazement of the spectators.
Thirty-f) ve sticks of the stuff were next
dropped into a hole 19 feet deep and 2K
ir.cbes wide. A fulminating cap was in
serted into one of the yellow sticks of
powder, and this was attached an electric
battery. At a given signal the handle on
the battery box was raised by one of the
workmen, and there folio wed a most terrific
explosion. A massive blue rock weighing
at least fifty tons was displaced by the
emmensite.
A charge was then placed in nine differ
ent holes, each twelve feet deep, and they
were exploded simultaneously, blowing up
the tide of the hill for fifty feetjan average
depth of twelve feet. A test was then made
on the surface of a large rock. One ounce
of the emmensite was placed on the rock
and exploded, splitting the huge boulder in
twain.
A test was made then with dynamite, and
it took five ounces to crack the rock in the
same wav. The manner in which gelbite
was exploded was next shown. This is
nothing but an ordinary piece of paper
placed in a solution of emmensite. This
papier was wrapped up and inserted into the
shell of a cartridge, with a small fulminat
ing cap on the end. This was placed in a
revolver and discharged in the same way as
a cartridge loaded with powder.
The party then descended the hill and par
took off refreshments that had been pro
vided for the occasion and afterward
returned to the city. Every person was
satisfied that this new powder was “the
thing.” In speaking of the explosive a
prominent contractor said: “I think that
this new powder will be adopted universally
for blasting purposes and for an implement
cf warfare.”
The English government is now nego
tiating with Dr. Emmens to manufacture a
large supply of the powder to be used for
experimenting.
VERY LEARNED DOLLS.
Edison's Manikins that Can Speak in
teveral Foreign Languages.
From Our Second Century.
The Edison works at Orange are running
these days on anew delight for little folks.
They are at work on a lot of 50,000 dolls,
and the first installment was completed Sat
urday. Marvelous dolls are these. Not
only do these dolls have sure enough hair
and eyebrows, not only can they roll their
eves about as if looking for mother, not only
can their eyes be closed when they are
tucked into dainty little cribs with snowy
lmens and bright silks to cover them, not
only can they walk and clap their hands—
they can talk and sing. It is sure enough
talk, too, and not the exasperating combin
ation of sounds produced by reeds in the
dolls hitherto called talking babies.
Great larks the little folks are going to
have with these dolls, for mere talk is but
one of their accomplishments. They can
sing as well, and they can talk and sing in
many foreign languages. My little lady
will go abroad, taking along her doll that is
able to tell how Jack Spratt could eat no fat
and his wife could eat no lean, and such
other nursery rhymes as please little folks.
After a few mouths in Paris the little lady
has learned to talk French from a pretty
French nurse, while her doll may very likely
say something like this:
Dors, enfant cheri!
Dors bien.
Ton petit ventre
,Est vide de pain,
Mais a sa place
Four tout besoin
Tu as un phono’
Du grand Edison.
Or maybe Berlin is the place of residence
and the make believe mamma’s tongue has
got some of the kinks and twists in it which
young yankee tongues acquire in the Fath
erland, while the doll, when bed-time
comes, buries its head in a downy little pil
low, closes its eyes, and says softly:
Ach ich bin so muede, ach ich bin so matt;
Moeehte gern zu Bette gehen,
Morgen wieder frueh aufstehen.
From the lips of a beauty of castile it
may be made to say:
Ah, mi vida, mi corazon;
Mi pan de manteca. mi churcheron.
To complete its education and round out
the interest to be excited in the visitors to
the make-believe mamma the doll should be
able to say, “Och, Nora, agra, it’s glad Oi
am to see vez,” aud that will be as easy for
the doll to say as are the softer words of
the nursery songs. Indeed, it will be by no
means necessary for the doll to go abroad
to get all these accomplishments, for the
shop that turns out these dolls turns out the
tongues that speak all the languages.
The peculiarity of these dolls is that they
are modifications of Edison's phonograph.
As already intimated in tho French rhyme,
the interior ot' tho doll contains mechanism
for operating a phonograph. The cylinder
of wax is made harder than when used in
phonograph, so that it will stand rough
usage, and it is, of course, by no means as
large. Those cylinders are stamped with
all sorts of Mother Goose melodies and nur
sery rhymes, and as the dolls aro to be sold
everywhere, the cylinders have to bo im
pressed with all sorts of languages. Hav
ing become tired of the nursery talk in En
glish, the owner of tho doll has only to open,
its back, take out the cylinder, and substi
tute one in any sort of language desired.
T he dolls will cost perhaps $3 more for hav
ing the ability to talk within limits just as
real folks do.
Bald heads are too many when they may
