SAYXOMORE ABOUT HEAT
WHERE AN AMERICAN SUMMER
WOULD SEEM A COOL. WAVE.
Places of Terrible Heat Under the
Tropics—Let Us be Thankful Our
Lot is Cast In a Cool Zone—How
People Live In Torrid Regions.
From the Chicago Daily AVtrj.
When weary mankind swelters in the
stifling summer beat, and refuses to be
comforted by the predictions of the signal
service they may find relief in the thought
that men have to live in places which,
after all, are much hotter even than Chi
cago in the middle of Julv. By comparison
thev may imagine themselves almost cool,
and, if their imagination is sufficiently
vivid, it results in a measure of comfort
independent of the readings of the ther
mometer.
Hottest of all torrid spots upon the sum
mer earth is Aden, at the mouth of the Red
sea, where the English government main
tains a c >al pile for its navy, and a force of
soldiers to watch the pile lest it be set aflre
by jealous powers. They lead the life of
lonely salamanders upon their isolated rock,
with a view of an almost boiling sea in or.o
direction, with wide stretches of baked snn.l
in the other, and behind them rugged
ranges of mountains, dry and red, wo .ere no
green thing is ever seen to grow. No mat
ter whence the wind may blow, it brings no
moisture to the straits of Bab ei Mandeb
even dew is a rare phenomenon, for the
clouds which appear in the sky at sunset
serve as blankets to make the night st g
nant with heat more unendurable than the
blazing sun by day. About once in four
years the thermometer registers as low as
!)0” in the coolest part of the day just be
fore sunrise. The lowest point of ordinary
nights is full five degrees warmer. But with
the sun returns the heat; hour by hour tho
mercury in the thermometer emulates the
course of the sun in the skv; it climbs
higher aud higher, and brings more discom
forts to suffering humanity. Shortly after
midday it reaches its highest notch, which
it maintains untd nearly sunset, and it
is never lower than 115°, and fre
quently travels many degrees higher y t,
and lias beeu kuowu to register 135° iu
the shade. It raius on this blistered military
pos‘ about once in three years, and that is
the sole water supply, for there are no
springs, and well borings tap nothing but
seams of eternal drought. As for much else
in Arabia, King Solomon is credited with
the responsibility for the Aden reservoirs,
and to this day thev are called King Solo
mon's wells. Wells of the neighboring
mountains tiavo been dammed at some re
mote antiquity, and ihe work is so enduring
that it may well have been done by afrites
under the mighty spell of the mystic seal.
Here is collected the water of the triennial
shower, and by economical use it may be
made to last until the rain comes again.
THIS IS STILE WORSE.
Bad as the ease is ut the southwest corner
of Arabia, it is even worse at the southeao
angle, where lie the Bahrein islands, just off
the coast of Oman. It is as hot here as at
Aden, and there is the additional discom
fort that it never rains at all. Hates grow
upon the islands and provide food for the
population; ior their drinking water they
are forced to seek it in the sea, which
is the last place where one would
expect to find fresh water. Strange as
it may seem, not a drop of water is drunk
by the Bahrein islanders which has not bee.i
brought from the bottom of the sea. Springs
ex s; atadep h of several fathoms, aud the
only way of getting a drink is to dive for
it. Water-hearers go down with empty
skirs and bring them up full to peddle the
precious contents.
Australia is probably the hottest of the
tcnipcra'e lands inhabited by white raoes,
and it is at the same time almost the driest,
excluding such absolute deserts as a large
portion of the Pacific coast of South
America. From the time when its summer
begins in September until the coming of
white -in July, not only does no rain fall,
but during those nine months there is
scarcely a cloud to shade the eart i. The
earth gives up all its moisture, almost the
large t bodies of water dry up, the air is
dry, aid day by day the sun sends down
ever fiercer beams. Adelaide, which is
upon the south shore of the con
tinent, finds 115° no unusual
temperature for Christmas, a id an addi
tional ten degrees scarcely calls for com
ment in the journals. Strangers to the
climate are prostrated, and yet retai > ani
mation enough to bo filled with amazement
that the natives seem so little affected by
the heat. Not content with the appalling
state of the thermometer in the shade, they
expose it to the sun and find to their dismay
a temperature of anywhere from 15 1° to
19u“. The native colonials go about their
business unaffected by the heat and look
not at all at the thermometer, but m st
religiously at the weathercocks. When
the wind shows a disposition to get into
the north they begin to tremble, and bv the
time the vanes have united in pointin'* to
the invisible pole star Adelaide is like a citv
of the dead. Doors and windows in every
house are tightly closed to keep out the heat
borne by the w ind from the northern desert •
workmen leave their work and idlers vanish
from the streets; even th j cabs are driven
home to si able. Then the wind begins,
gentle at first, as though trying to mask its
real ferocity. Little usts of breeze snap
about tue corners, little throbs of heat
steal upon one as though innocent, yet
every pulsation of heat, every whisper
of the wind, brings lassitude’ with it.
m about turee hours the wind
comes steadily from the north; the
heat comes diroctly from tho furnace.
Ihe stranger who finds the heat intolerable
m his closed room thinks to enjoy greater
b . v throwi ,g ope i the windows to
catch the breeze which he can hear, whose
force he can measure by the bending tree
tons and the tossing boughs. The idea is
SMuctivo, the execution is destructive.
