JOKES OF THE WAS.
rtnod stories About Confederate 6ol
diere-A Georgian's Persistency.
from the Chattanooga Times.
Once Gen. Hardee came across a strag
gler and asked him “why he did not travel
Lter and keep up with his command.”
The soldier wished to know “what in the
deuce he had to do with it.”
••Only that I am Gen. Hardee, the com
mander of this department,” was the reply
“Ob, you wrote a book on tactics, did
T °“i did,” said the general.
“Well,’’ said the private. “I have been
taught ’according to your rules, how to
duuble column at half distance. Now I
wish vou would tell me how to double-dis
tance on half rations.”
Gen. Hardee stuck spurs to his horse and
traveled on.
Early in the war one of the men in a
South Carolina brigade was on picket duty
(so-called) near Mananas. There was not a
Yankee within twenty miles of us at that
time. The next day there wasto be an in
spection, and oar hero had taken bis gun all
to pieces and was rubbing it up so as to
make a sine the next day, when inspected.
While so doing, Gen Barham, who was un
known to the soldier, who was anew re
cruit. i ode lip ' What ar e you doing thereT
said Geu. U. “Ob, lam a kind of a senti
nel; who are you, anyhow?”
“Oh, lam only ‘a kind’ of a brigadier
general,” was the answer.
“Hold on; wait until 1 get this darned old
gun together, and 1 will give you a kind of
a present,” 'aid the sentinel.
But Gen. Barham did not wait. Ha went
off and reported the luckless soldier, who in
a short time found himself “a kind” of a
prisoner in “a kind" of a guardhouse, and
had to do a number of extra hours of duty
as “a kind” of sentinel.
On one occasion a man from Georgia had
been very persistent in personal application
to Gen. lee for a furlough. Oue morning
the general asked his tormentor if he under
stood the position of a soldier. The latter
said he did. He was ordered to assume it.
Gen. Lee then gave the command: ‘.‘Right
about face, forward, march.” As he never
gave the command to “halt,” the Georgian
kept on marching until he got tired; but
this little hint cured him, and bis next ap
plication was through the usual channels.
When Gen. Mabo e was wounded at
second Manassas, someone, to comfort Mrs.
Mahone, said; “Oh, don’t be uneasy; it’s
only a flesh wound.” Mrs. Mahone, through
her tears, cried out: “Oh, I know that is
impossible; there is not enough flesh on him
for that,”
1 don’t know whether this is a joke on the
general or the private. A day or so after
the old first rseched Manassas junction, in
August, 18G1, one of the men, who did not
clearly comprehend his position, bad the
impudence ro ask Gen. Beauregard “where
certain big guns that had just arrived from
Richmond would be placed.” The general
replied: “Young man, if the coat on my
hack knew the secrets of my heart, I would
cut it in pieces.”
On the Peninsula the gallant and jolly
Gen. Bankhead Magruder had ordered a
tneal for himself and staff. A hungry reb
—and who ever saw one who was not hun
gry ?—came up to the farm house, espied
the nicely-filled table, and, without leave or
license, sat down and began to annihilate
things. Just then the general and friends
walked in, escorted by the host. All were
surprised.
“Halt!” said flery Magruder, in terms
more ozolicit than polite, “do you know
whose table that is you are eating at?”
“No, sir, said John Reb, with his mouth
full. “Whose is it?”
“Gen. Magruders sir, the commander of
this department ”
“All right, general,” with another big
mouthful. “These war times I ain’t par
ticular wnere leat or who I eat with; sit
down and make yourself ut home.”
The foraging private was unceremo
niously fired out, but not before he had
nearly gottea outside of a pretty square
meal.
TILS STRONGEST DEBATER.
Senator Morgan of Alabama Said to
be the Best All Around Talker.
From the Baltimore Nun.
In opening the congressional directory the
first name to greet the eye of the reader is
that of Senator John T. Morgan of Ala
bama, who is unquestionably the most gifted
debater in congress to-day. Senator Ingalls
can pour out au abundance of sarcasm and
invective after due preparation; Edmunds
can expound the intricate points of consti
tutional and general law; Sherman can dis
cuss finance and kindred topics in a masterly
manner; Vest can equal any man in the
Senate in rough-and-tumble political discus
sions: Vance can give a humorous turn to
the most dreary subject, and Harris can
dissect the parliamentary practice of the
Senate with the skill of a surgeon. There
are other senators who possess especial
qualifications to deal with certain subjects,
but as an all-round general debater the
equal of Senator Morgan does not occupy a
6eat in the national legislature.
He was born in Tennessee, but at an
early ago he emigrated to Alabama, and
received an academic training there. He
was a member of the state convention
which passed the ordinance of secession,
and afterward joined the confederate army,
in May, 18fil. Entering the ranks as pri
vate, he worked his way up to the rank of
brigadier general, and commanded the Vir
ginia and Alabama brigades, respectively.
He entered the Senate in 1877. has been
twice re-elected, and his present term wili
expire March 3, 18D5.
Veteran congressional officials do not
hesitate to pronounce Senator Morgan the
most remarkable debater within their
recollection. He can talk on almost any
subject with the greatest fluency, and the
official reporters seldom havo to call upon
him to revise a speech. If the “force bill”
is to be defeated by free discussion and pro
tracted debate on the part of the demo
crats in the Senate, Mr. Morgan may be
depended upon to do all in his power to con
tribute to that end.

Pure Water.
An article in the Times of the 37th states
that some of our citizens send away for
spring water for drinking purposes. Why
should they do this when by the use of one
of Pasteur’s Germ Proof Filters the river or
artesian water can bo made absolutely pure
and wholesome?
This is anew invention by the celebrated
French physician after whom it is called.
The water is forced through a number of
porcelain tubes, which are so arranged as to
be protected from the least danger of con
tamination, as it passes directly from the
hydrant. Physicians and others interested
are invited to inspect its workings at the
crockery house of James S. Silva, where ail
information will be cheerfully furnished.
