Theodore Merrils, the most prominent
colored man in all Bucks county, is dead.
To his final death Theodore believed himself
be under the spell of the Evil One. and
t v. e last words he uttered were these: ‘ I
want to die. I feel the frogs jumping about
in inv stomach, and I can’t stand it” Mer
•r. final illness and death yield a story at
(aoe startling and unique.
Three weeks ago Merrils met a smooth
spoken specimen of his race in the ferry
hVuse at Camden. Merrils was ailing at
tie time and made ccsual mention of the
fact to his chance acquaintance. The latter
at once announced that he was a doctor
himself and able to “cure any and all
di ease ” Merrils must have r.een im
pressed by the stranger’s glib speech, for he
offered him then and there an opportunity
alleged practitioner gave Merriis a
hit of pasteboard, on which was graven
this Inscription: ’“William West k D„
No 721 Scott street, Wilmington, Del.”
"Meet me here to-morrow at 9 o’clock and
Til give you some medicine.” said Dr.
West! as he bade his new patient good
m ßoth men kept their appointment, and
Merrils used up the be-t part of au hour in
telling the man from Wilmington just bow
he felt When he had finished talking Dr.
West said that he would agree to cure him
fora paltry fSO. Merrils considered the
price fairly reasonable, and counted out
*2O then and there to clinch the bargain. In
return for the cash he received a small
bottle filled with a dark-timed liquid.
Then they parted, Merrils returning to
Langhorne, firm in the belief that he would
soon be rid of that troublesome pain in the
Ct Three or four days elapsed. He took the
medicine, but experienced no relief. On
the contrary, the" pains increased and he
began to ieel nervous. He sent for Dr.
Frank Lovett, a well-known physician, in
Langhorne, who had attended Merrils
before, and had told him early m the spring
that he was suffering from dropsy, super
induced by a valvular disease of the heart.
Dr. Lovett gave Merrils some medicine,
advised him to keep quiet and not indulge
in buying any more high-priced medicines
from quacks, and then went away.
Tee next morning the dapper Dr. West
materialized. He told Merrils that he had
come all the way from Wilmington to cure
him. The sick man naturally felt com
plimented. He a lowed the “doctor” to
punch him in the ribs, and ask him all man
ner of personal questions. “Now give me
$lO and I’il teli you exactly what ails you,”
said Dr. West. Eager to possess the
knowledge, Merrils handed over two five
dollar notes.
“My dear sir,” said West with solemn
emphasis, “you are bewitched. You are
under the spell of the evil spirits. Your
neigiibnjs have tried to poison you. Even
now there may he live toads crawling in
your stomac . I must say that you are in
a i ret’y had fix, but for S3O more I can and
wili charm away the evil spirit and cure
you.”
Asa matter of course Merrils was im
pressed. He was badly frightened. “If
you will only drive them frogs out of me
I’ll pav you double.”
Dr. West said that he would, but that his
directions must be carried out to the letter.
He scattered big darning needles in every
room in the house. He cut grotesque
figures m the air with his hands, and mum
bled incoherent speeches. Kin dly he gave
Jl.-rrils another b ttle of medicine, bade
him a cheerful good-day and departed.
For four days Aler-ils took the medicine
and grew worse. Flo was satisfied that
there were at least four frogs iu his stom
ach. His sufferings were almost unendura
ble. On the fifth day Dr. West made his
reappearance. He told his patient that the
charm was working, and that he would
soon have the frogs quiet. Then he scat
tered more needles on the floor, sang a
hymn, and accepted Mrs. Merrils’ invita
tion to stop over night. The next morning
he left the bouse and village. Previous to
his departure he accepted $0 from Merrils.
Instead of improving, the patient grew
rapidly worse. The wife, becoming
alarmed, and not knowing where to find
Dr eat, called in Dr. Lovett. The latter
refused to touch the case until Mrs. Merrils
had tossed Dr. West’s charm bottles out of
the window. Then he turned Ills attention
to Merru*. After a superficial examination
Dr. Lovett told Merrils that he could not
five. "I don’t care. I want to die. Them
frogs are tickling me,’ groaned the patient
m reply. The next day Merrils died.
Last Sunday Dr. Lovett made a post
morieni examination of the body in order
to satisfy the widow, who insisted on know
ing just what was in “poor Theodore’s
stomach, but no frogs or toads were found.

A SOUTH BOUND CONNECTION
Which Would Open to Savannah a
Rich Country.
Greenwood, S. C., Aug. 9 .—Editor
Morning News: It may be of interest to
your readers to learn something of the coun
try through which it is proposed toconstruct
a railroad to connect with the South Caro
lina and the South Bound railroads to
secure intercourse with your city, and to
know the value of this place as a point of
connection. Greenwood is a thriving town
at the intersection of the Port Royal
and Western Carolina, the Georgia. Carolina
and Northern, the Columbia and Greenville
aud the projected Cumberland Gap rail
roads, thus giving her direct communication
with every point of the compass, and
making her the central railroad town of the
Piedmont region in South Carolina. The
proposed road south from here, designed to
form a link of the Cumberland Gap road,
will traverse one of the best tim
bered regions of the state, earnestly de
manding access to market, and also a
most fertile agricultural region, which has
become famous for its large cotton yield as
well as its adaption to fruit culture. Besides
these valuable products, this same region of
country abounds, it has been recently dis
covered, iu mineral wealth, which of itself
will necessitate the construction of railroad
transportation. Six miles south of us, di
rectly on the proposed road, has recently
been discovered immense deposits of man
ganese. iron, coal and mica. A company
has been formed and has gone t > work
with the assurances of large results. All
these interests combined demand the con
struction of ample railroad facilities, and the
opening up of convenient markets, among
which Savannah is the most desirable.
With this connection your city would be
easily acce-sible to all the northwestern
portion of this state, whereas it cannot now
be reached except through Augusta, Colum
bia or Charleston. We desire to have it
otherwise, and have resolved on tbe con
struction of the line of road indicated, and
hope to have the co-operation and approval
of the projectors of the South Bound road.
We have a charter already, and it can be
built at small cost. The route lies along tho
ridge indicated as the proper route for a
road by Mr. Calhoun so long ago as his day,
and just now about to be ulilized.

A WOMAN ON CYCLING.
The “Ordinary” Looks Pretty, But the
“-Safety” Has Other Charms.
Mrs. Pennell, in St. Nicholas.
Of all cycles, the most delightful is the
ordinary tall bicycle. If I were a boy I
would ride nothing else. There is a certain
swing of life about it, a certain sympathy
between it and the rider not to bo had iu
any other machine. The hight, too, of
the big wheel, above which the rider sits,
makes almost as if he were flying
through the air; and in countries where
hedges and walls are high, much more of
the landscape ca i be seen from its high
perch than from the low seat of a “safety”
or trycicle. But, then, on the tall
bicycle you must always take the risk
of “headers.” The smallest stone or
stick may send you headlong into the dust
or mud. Ido not think 1 ever realized the
treachery of the * ‘ordinary” until one day
when a rider I know came back from a
ride to the little towns near Home with his
nose patched up with postage stamps. A
tiny twig had pitched him over on the hard
road and cut his nose badly. Iu the next
vill <ge he came to there was no courtplas
ter nor doctor to bo had, and the villagers
recommended the postolflee as the most
likely place to have his wounds at
tended to. Now, if that twig had
been on the streets of Rome or
within immediate reach of courtplastor,
you may tfaake up your mind he would have
ridden over it as easy as you please; the
bicycle waits until it has you all to itself to
break your bones and cover you with cuts.
For long tours there is no objecdon to it; It
will not carry comfortably' even the very
small amount of baggage you will need. And
yet Mr. Stevens rode oio on his journey
round the world, and there are many men
and boys who would not give io up for any
safer cycle that could be invented.
Still the “ordinary” is not so much rid
den as it was a few years ago. Nowadays,
in England, you will see ten “safeties” to
one “ordinary.” The “safety” is the little,
low bicycle with the two wheels of almost
the same size; and for the last year or two
one kind has been made for the girls to ride.
If you have been on a three-wheeled
machine only, and then try the
“safety,” as '[ did last summer, you
will wonder how you ever were wil
ling to work such a dead weight as a tri
cycle over good or indifferent roads. The
“safety” is so light; it is a single track ma
chine, so that on tbe worst roads you can
usually manage to And a path; it is so low
that if you do tumble you will not hurt
yourself (how often did I roll over in the
dust, just outside of Dieppe, on my first
trip, and jump up, none the worse for it!)
aud it will carry a respectably large bag.
All these things, you will see, are greatly in
its favor.
I fancy I can hear some girl ask, “But
how can we ever mount it?” That was the
question I asked last summer when I made
my first trial. But, fortunately for me,
my machine was a tandem and there was
someone to hold it steady while I got on.
By practice, however, girls can learn—
indeed, many have learned already—to
mount by standing between the wheels,
putting one foot over the frame on to
the descending pedal, standing on this,
which of course starts the machine, and
then sitti ig oil the saddle and riding
away. There is always more or less diffi
culty about this—a girl’s skirts are so in
her wav and likely to catch, aud yet as
soon as She is Beated she must keep in go
ing. Lately two or three manufacturers in
England have invented what they call a
safety attachment, a contrivance by which
the machine can be steadied and kept at a
a standstill while the rider mounts as easily'
as if it were a tricycle.
I have experimented only on a tandem
safety with a : ider behind me to steer it and
put on the brake, hut I have never enjoyed
riding so much. O ;ce you have started the
machine seems to carry you along with no
effort on your part. It is not rigid, like a
tricycle, but swings and swajs with your
every motion.
But fur all that the trycicle has many
good points; it is safer than a “safety.” I
have charged a flock of sheep on one, and
the machine did not even upset. It needs
no attachment to make it easy to mount.
Iu a crowded street you can be brought to
a standstill without having to jump off, as
you must from a “safety” or an “ordi
nary,” aud as I bud to last sum
mer, coming down the crowded Rue
de Tivoli in Paris, when all the
omnibuses and carriages in front came to a
sudden halt. In a country lane, if you
wish to rest for awhile in a pretty, shady
spot, you can sit there quietly on your
tricycle. Nowadays the tricycle is made so
light and compact that you cun ride almost
as fast on it us on a “safety.” Indeed, some
I e pie say that on a tricycle you can make
better time, in the end, simply because you
never have to dismount.
There are so many cycle manufacturers
in England and Aineric i that hundreds of
machines are made which differ only in cer
tain small details. In making your choice
from among their number you must be
guided chiefly by your own special wants,
for if you go to a good maker you will se
cure a good machine; it is merely a ques
tion of deciding which one suits you best.
After you have your machine the next
thing yon must do is to learn to
mount it property. Do bo sure to learn this
in the beginning. If von acquire the i abit
of mounting awkwardly you will never be
■ " a v *‘ you oot sometimes won
dered to see a rider of experience climb into
hi* noddle a* if he were attempting it fur
the first ttmef Jn America riders nay more
attention to this than they do in England.
Americans, as a rule, though they may not
ride faster than Englishmen, ride belter.
