Skin Betoe Track and th Mam
moth Gambling Dana.
from the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Saratoga Springs. Sept, ti.—This cele
brated spa his degenerated. Time was when
wa ters had fame and effect. Now they
are kept up with liberal rock salting. Not
oue in twenty of the many waters hare
medical properties. They act upon man
tled as they would upon a graven Image.
The modern Saratoga is given up to the
gamblers. All the respectability and gilt
aice which congregate in a season cannot
leaven the other lump. The hotels are just as
,„r~e mav be as well kept, but the glory of
Saratoga t -day is iU skin race track and
fts mammoth gambling deus.
Every day at 11 o’clock the racing be
gins, and br 2 o’clock it is over. No con
siderations which attach to other first-mass
racing tracks apply here. Form in a horse
is no criterion of prowess. It is a mere
game of ctuck-a-luck, in which a b ind
man has probably the best cbaaca. Old
timers keep their money and look upon the
suckers as they they throw it away. And
when the surprises over the slay’s event cui
m„ ate one can hear the remarks:
‘•A little raw, partners
“Yes indeed, sir. A few grams raw.”
The 'Saratoga cf to-day divides itself
loeieatlv. In one of the great hotels and in
the cottages lodges the respectability—of
the others, further deponent sayeth not.
You must judge of the passing throng as
you see it. The sport and the overdressed
of the w eaker sex predominate. The scar
let woman is likewise here—and then, also,
there is eminent respectability. The con
siderations which attract the better classes
are the gifts of nature. No place is more
beautiful. Its towering trees, grassy lawns,
tempered climate, all conspire to attract the
eye. Only man is vile. .
The gambling begins here when the races
are over. Tijree o’clock in the afternoon
the tiger is in his jungle in the fullest blast.
From then on until the morning light the
game i unceasing. More than a dozen
places are given over to games of chance,
but the one place pre-eminent is known as
Spencer's, years ago established by the
eminout statesman and pugilist, John Mor
* The gambling palace, for it is worthy of
the name, is a square, red brick building on
a street only one remove from the principal
thoroughfare. One wing of it abuts on the
fashionable Circular street, and overlooks
the handsome CoDgress Hall park of goodly
acres and well kept lawn. The main en
trance i9 unpretentious, and the more select
one with the appearance of approach to a
literary retreat. Inside there is a sumptu
ous view. The approach to the gambling
room is through a well lighted hall, from
which you epter a general eafe, to the rear
of which is a restaurant famed for its tooth
some gustatory spreads. From the cafe a
dozen open entrances lead to the large room
where the gambling goes on. O e has no
trouble to reach it. There are no peep holes
or wicket doors. Simply walk in unmo
lested, without introduction, and play or be
a wallflower, as you piease.
The large room in which the gambling
paraphernalia is displayed is furnished with
much elaboration. It is not so dazzling as
Phil Daly’s Long Branch place, but it is
rich in its velvet carpets and heavy Turkish
portiere-. It is at night a flood of light,
reflected irom four magnificent crystal
chandeliers. Between 9 o’clock and mid
night hundreds crowd the rooms. All,
though, are not engaged in play. The club
has become a place where men engage to
meet, with uo thought of being more than
lookers-on.
In this symposium of chance the roulette
wheel is the lavorite. There are three
such wheels, while one faro table does the
work. The limit of the faro table is SIOO.
It is largely patronized by horsemen, poli
ticians, a..d youthful sports. A well-known
New York lawyer is a steady devotee and
quite ahead of the game. The Labold
brothers, owners of Montrose and ether
cracks, are steady patrons with varied
fortunes. Here, also, the Cincinnati high
flyer of Phil Daly’s place is now encamped,
and thus far a goodly loser. Roulette is
the attraction for such as are mere tyros
in the gambling art. Here, too, the limit
of SIOO is fixed. The house gives every
liberal chance. There is but one zero upon
the roulette wheel.
The place, though, does not have about it
that ease which marks its Long Branch
rival. The dealers have more avarice
clearly shown. Not a few of the attaches
are old men, who have weathered years of
courting the lucky goddess.
The dealer of the faro bank wonld hardly
tip the scales at a hundred weight. A
youthful face, hardened with his life, the
blood gone even from the lips. But to see
him handle the checks and deal the box,
wuh a precision and mathematical nicety,
is the evidence of his perfect calling.
At the hazard table there were fewer
patrons. Such as here do woo fickle fortune
bet upon the colors, black and white, and
upon tue numbers, odd and even, rather
than upon the serial numbering. Occasion
ally one can see a fool blow in a SIOO stack
Ui:on the raffle. I happened in on a night
when a Cincinnati youth, well known to the
Queen City Club, came over to the hazard
| table from the faro bank, a fairly heavy
loser.
“U e must have a carriage to go home,”
he said to ins companion, and he added,
there goes my last five. Put it on the

and locks of iron gray, is a noted figure on
the porch. Judge Groosbeck. of Cincinnati,
with his erect form and molded eagle-face,
attracts the eye.
But Saratoga is the place of delicious idle
ness. It is given over to eating and sleep
ing, driving and yawning. It is too demo
cratic for gossip, and is no place for Miss
Fry ©r Grundy to indulge the propensity.
The gowns worn by the women are marvels
of the art, and tho diamonds exposed suf
ficient for a king’s ransom. Society here
regulates itself with austerity. The lambs
and wolvee, while in hail almost, are as far
apart as if an ocean divided them. Here
pride and aristocracy affiliate to crowd out
such as do not fill every requirement to class
them such.
But it has its tough sides. Here the
gambler aid the patron of the turf form
the larger elements, with their women,
loud in dress and face, with freedom un
restrained. Here the politician, from the
small beer to the Ajax, fixing fence and
giving direction to the affairs of state. It
is a place, essentially, where money talks.
But nature has endowed it with ampli
tude of beauty. Its climate is as a balm,
vitalized by the Green and Adirondack
mountains, the outlines of which loom up
in a magnificent vista. The towering
trees, shaded parks and lawns, the wealth
of equipage, the daily promen ides, its mag
nificent hotels, its splendid drives, ail com
bine to make it indeed an “ideal spot,” and
its waters, well, they do not harm if, indeed,
they do no good. W. C. Macß.
“A RACE WITH DEATH!”
Among the nameless heroes, none
are more worthy of martyrdom than
he who rode down the valley of the
Conemaugh, warning the people
ahead of the Johnstown flood.
Mounted on a powerful horse, faster
and faster went the rider, but the
flood was swiftly gaining, until it
caught the unlucky horseman and
swept ou, grinding, crushing, anni
hilating both weak and strong.
In the same way is disease lurking
near, ready to falL, without, warning,
on its victim, who allows his system
to become clogged up, and his blood
poisoned, and thereby his health en
dangered. To eradicate these poisons
from the system, no matter what their
name or nature, and save yourself a
spell of malarial, typhoid or bilious
fever, or eruptions, swellings, tumors
and kindred disligurements, keep tho
liver and kidneys healthy and vigor
ous, by the use of Dr. Pierce’s Gold
en Medical Discovery. It’s the only
blood-purifier sold on trial. Your
money Is returned if it doesn't do
exactly as recommended. Sold by
druggists, in large bottles, at SI.OO.
