FILTH IN THB MARKET. ■rhe Eanitary Inspector Deals With a Needed Reform. Inspector De. verger. of the Citisen.’ unitary Aa -ciation, in hi. report of in erection* for the week ending last night, Inerts the quality of food produce in the Savannah market as follows: Dressed meats fowlin'** beef, pickle i beef ”i Vegetables fair; green fruit la f*Tne inspector reports little game in the mrket so far. He reports that the market bu l ingUin a very bad eoudition. The rn 'l-aks- water has to be stintingly used [ n cleansing the butcher tenches bemuse uL 3nor underneath them is of bricks so corous as to admit of water circulating through thorn or leaking bet ween the in terstices and rat boles, saturailng the vuuit roofs and rendering the vaults damp, moldy at.d so unhealthy as to jeopardize the health of the occupants. The butcher benches are constructed of wow l—wide boards, the seams in them open and crammed with particles of flesh and clotted blood. It is consequently a hard matter to cleanse them even with an un stated use of water; and It is therefore a calamity to have the upper floor of the market in a condition which restricts the „. e of water whilst the market is being washed out. If the benches were of mar. ie slabs instead of wooden boards, which are hacked and roughened on the surface at every market hour, they might be kept clean with a limited application of water, but wooden boards become saturated with fluids which even thorough and repeated washings cannot remove. i be market floor i self, the inspector says, should be th- roughly drenched with water immediately after market hours and well scoured and t craped, but the doing of this will sorely incommode and injure the occu pants of the rooms below; so there is no possible obviation of unsanitary conditions m the market as long as the building re mains in its present radically defective state. And as to the vaults beneath, par ticularlv those ou the north side of the base ment, some of them are simply unmitigated nui-ances—too dark, sooty and disgustingly filthy to I e photographed to the imagination of a person who has not seen them. May not the indifference to the sanitary condr ion of their cellars, of tenants about and near the market square, the inspector avks, be attributable to the example of in difference or toleration, if not positive maintenance on the part of the city of the* places in its own public market Bouse? Within a stone’s throw cf the mar ket is a cellar, in which tons of filth have been allowed to accumulate. EARNINGS PILING UP. The Central’s Good Showing During August. The Central railroad has just sent out its August statement of the system’s operations. The gross earnings in August, 1890, show an increase of approximately $104,000 over the earnings of August, 1889, and the net earnings show an Inc: ease of $75,000. Billing Wen at the Central Wharves vv aut More Pay and Shorter Hours. The demands of the shipping clerks at the Central railroad wharves, and the prompt recognition by the company of tueir claims, was the topic of conversation yesterday among the other clerks employed at the wliarvos, who aired their grievances. The billing men say that they have far greater cause for com plaint than the shipping clerks had, and toey have made demands of the company at different times, but have never received any satisfaction. In speaking of the mat ter last night one of the baling clerks made some pretty strong statements. “The shipping clerks,’’ said he, “no doubt Had goed cause for their action, and I am giail to know that they were successful m having their claims recognized, but there is another class of clerks employed at the " uarves that has much greater ground for complaint, and they are the men of the bill department Imagine a man working twenty-four hours on a stretch, as I have exI e TfI laDy < r ccasi ? ns . without any rest except for meals, and then starting in again worrI b6r day ’ s work ‘ F " r this extra Tin Snl reC3lv ® no extra compensation, lho bunday work which wo have to oer oute*trnilS the busy Soasou done with out extra wages either.” the river and harbor. The symptoms of catarrh are, headache, obstruction of nose, dis charges falling into throat, some times profuse, watery, and acrid, at others, thick, tenacious, mucous, purulent, bloody, putrid and offen sive ; eyes weak, ringing in ears, deafness ; offensive breath ; smell and taste impaired, and general debility. Only a few of these symptoms likely to be present at once. _ Thousands of cases termi nate in Consumption and end in the grave, without ever having manifested all these symptoms. The regular monthly meeting of the Pooler Rifle Club will take place next Thursday. Steve Collins has so far recovered from his sickness that he is able to be out and at tending to business. Mrs. M. Walsh, who has been visiting the home of Thomas McEvady for the past month, has returned to Savannah. Miss Gruver of Charleston, S. C., who has been visiting the family of George W. Gruver, will return to Charleston to-day. The Central has about completed the turn out at this place, and hereafter the e will be no trouble about getting room for the long freights to take the siding. Mr. Rothwell has commenced to remodel the small house at the head of Morgan street, and will convert it into a neat and comfortable residence, to be occupied by him Nov. I. Mra Cook, relict of the late Mr. Cook of Pooler, died Thursday of old age, at the home of Mr. Oliver, on Pine Barren road. Her funeral took place Friday afternoon, and was largely attended. The Pooler Social Club held a very de ligntful meeting at the residence of Dr. W. X. Bleakoey Friday evening. The Pooler baud was present, and a goed time w as had by all who were honored with an invitation to attend. The public school will open to-morrow, and it will be a busy day for the school children. Mr. Furgerson, who has so ac ceptably filled the position as principal for the past two years, will still have charge. He will be assisted by Miss Clarke, who was with him last spring. E. L. Commtns, telegraph operator for the Charleston and Savannah railway, bos been put in charge of the junction office again, lie was removed to Savannah river during the summer. While in charge of the junc tion office Mr. Commins will board in Po ler, going to the office every morning on the ’’vestibule,” and returning in the even ing on the “sboofly.” Thomas Wiokbam, one of Pooler’s best citizens, was complimented last week with a promotion from junction conductor to yardmaster at the Central’s wharf. This is one instance of “the right man in the right place.” Mr. Wickham has been with the Central for a number of years, and has held several important positions, all of which he has creditably filled. A New York society journal says that the Princess of Wales has shown a great fondness for Miss Leiter, which is a long, curled feather in the Chicago lairl’s cap, as the princess has always been slower in showing her preferences than her lord and master. It adds: “Especially unusual is the compliment to American women, who usually impress the prince only, with no thought of her royal highness. Miss Leiter is an attractive girl. Her complexion is not spotless enough for a beauty, which is her own fault, and shows that she is ab sorbed in others and not in herself entirely. Miss Leiter was a success in Washington society, and, also, at Newport, and showed good practical sense os well as strong filial affection. Sir Arthur Hall, the wealthy English barrister, to whom she has been reported engaged, has much independence of thought and action, and is, too, n great friend of the Prince of Wales and his family.” MISCKLLANBOTXS.
