Altmayer & Cos. on the conee-sloh they have obtained In the curtailment at. their hours of business from 7 o’olocgp. m. to 8 o’clock p in., I think it an uyuttice to the other half a dozen firet-class dry goods store* of the city, viz.: Messrs. B, Hogan, Morrison, Fove & C°-i O. Gray & Son, Jackson, Metz ger & Cos., Upßtave Eckstein & Cos. and Crohan & Dooqer, to let that article pass un noticed, or to 1 let ‘the general public re main under the erroneous impression that Messrs. A. R. i Aitmayer & Cos. were the first to inaugurates the 8 o’clock movement, or that the above named firms were in the habit of keeping their plaoes of business open until 7 or later. Such is uot tue oase, but qn the contrary, the stores have been closed, and the employes dis missed as -ooti after ii o'clock as thev were accustomed tor during the early closing movement that terminated on the Ist of October. I have to my own personal knowledge seen a great many of the em ployes on their wav home from their re spective stores at 6:05 o’olock, and on no occasion (Saturdays excepted! have the male employes beeu detained as late as 7 o’clock (not excepting yesterday, which was unusually heavr), but generally get ting out about 6:15 o’clock, whilst the lady olerks invariably leave their posts of duty between five and ten minutes past. Those dry goods stores alre idy mentioned are not in the babit of heralding taeir good actions with a flourish of trumpets, or of blazoning forth their philanthropic deeds to an admiring public. Prefermg to pursue thisr course u : ostentatiously, they feel secure in the knowledge that they pos-ess the confidence of their patronlzers, ns well a; the good will and esteem of their em ployes, who, in return, show a just apprecia te by their fidelity to principle and strict attention in tho discharge of their duties. Cincinnati, Oct. 15.—At the Latonia Jockey Club’s course this afternoon the track was excellent. A large crowd had assembled on account of the fine weather, and there was good sport. The favorites were beaten except in the fifth race. The results were: First Rack—For two-year-olds, selling; one half mile. Little Midget won, with Willow second and CaDricetnird. Time 1:50V4. Becond Race —Selling; one mile. Pickup won, with Argenta second and Robin third. Time Third Race— Selling; mile and twenty yards. Polemns won, with Aunt Kate second and Teu like third. Time L 1594. FLORID A’3 CAPITAL. Date of Opening the Leon County- Fair Changed. Tallahassee, Fla., Oct. 15.—The direc tors of the Leon connty alliance fair have decided to change the dates from Nov. 20 and 21, os first announced, to Nov. 25, 20 and 27. A board of lady managers hs been appointed. Vy, I. Vasoti, president of t e fair association, is arranging to have Pawnee Bill and his Indians and cowboys exhibit here during the fair. An effort will also be made to get exhibitors from other states en route to the Ocala exposition to stop over here. The indications are that the fair will be a financial success. The live stoca exhibit will be extra fine, and most of the exhibits wiil be sent to Ocala and entered there. The democratic county campaign will open at Miecosukie to-night. Mrs. Weeks, wife of United States Mar shal E. O. Weeks, is expected home to-mor row from Spencer, N. Y., where she has been spending the summer. Considerable building is going on here in the residence portion of the city, and there are indications of quite a building boom during the winter. Games Yesterday.
