Newspaper Page TextBAPTISTS meet at boston. seventeenth Annual Session of the Mercer Association. Boston, Ga., Oct. 21.—The seventeenth annual sesriOß of the Mercer Association evened in the Boston Baptist church on Wednesday, Oct. 15. The introductory „ rmo u was preached at 11 o’clock a. m. by , X. A. White of Boston, his subject hems “The People of God." Tne attend ance was large from the beginning. Tbe delegates and visitors were given carte blanche to the town, its houses and homes. Dinner was served on the ground each day. The association was called to order at 2 n'clo-k and was organized by electing Hon. Tohn G. McCall of Quitman moderator, t ey W J. williams of ’ihomasville a sistant, and Rev. W. A. Pard e and Wm. T Gaulden as clerks. The association is composed of churcbee from portions of Thomas Colquitt, Lowndes and Clinch cmnties, and all of Brooks county. There were present twenty ministers rep resenting forty-four churches, with a mem bership of ab ut 4,000. The reports from the various committees aud churches show a prosperity and zeal worthy so coble a cause. An increased membership, a larger and more regular attendance on divine services and a greater number of Sunday schools and scholars were reported. The commit he on finance reported SI,BOO. THE TEMPERANCE COMMITTEE. The report of the temperance committee, while brief, was strong and pointed. Teh se ’.iment of the association seems to be that it is better to secure legislation to make a state tempera ce (prohibition) law and submit the same to the people for rati fication, than to try to enact local option laws. Very strong and persistent influence will probably be brought to bear on the next legislature with this object, as the farmer element is largely in the majority there, a.d they generally are prohibi tionists. A move to establish a fund for the sup port of indigent ministers withiu the bounds of the association was set on foot. It met the hearty support of those present and was warmly indorsed. THE REPORT ON MISSIONS. The report on missions was warmly ap proved by the associati n. As was that also of the Sunday school committee. The devotional exercises were a promi nent feature of the occasion, and some very fine sermon- were preached, notably, those by Rev. Dr. Hatcher of Atlanta. Rev. Mr. Ragsdale of Quitman, and Rev. Mr. McCall of Macon, wno is the financial agent of Mercer University. Tbe entire session was charade: ized by great harmony and unity of purpose. The Methodist church was placed at the disposal of the association during its ses sion, fo , as anticipated, the Baptist church c uld not hold the large crowds assembled. The association adjourned Friday after adopting resolutions of thanks for, and appreciation of courtesies ad hospitalities ex ended, and selecting Hickory Head church in Brooks county as the place of the next meeting. PUNTA GORDA POINTERS. Two Important Lawsuits—Drowned in a t-quall. Punta Gorda, Fla., Oct. 2L—Orang-s are being put on the market and some early shipments are being arranged. There will be a great shortage in this season’s crop and it will be 50 per cent, smaller than last year. A general development association has been organized. Its object will be tbe busi fit::’-' ami social development of the town. A schooner line has been estai lished to run front I’inita Goroa to Key West, ship ping l.ve eatt.e. The shipments will be about 2uo cattle a week. THE PHOSPHATE BOOM. The secretary of state reports twenty seven phosphate companies chartered, rep r.senti g a capital of $11,000,000. New discoveries are co tinuallv being made and new cunjanies being formed. It looks as though within a year the shipments through Boca Grande will equal 100,000 tons per mouth. A LIGHT HOUSE KEEPER DROWNED. William Elliott, keeper of the Boca Grande light house, was and owned last Thursday evening. The town of Punta Gorda seems to have won everything at last in its suits. The supreme court holds on appeal that tl e legality of a corporation cannot be called into question by a bill of injunction, the complainant having I.is remedy bv quo w arranto. Since the ren lition of this de ctsi n the complainants have applied aid t.een denied the quo warranto remedy, as the facts and positions taken are untena le. A RAILROAD SUIT. The great suit of Carey, Wailos, Cbipley and their associates against the Florida bouthern railroad occupied most of the time ot the last county court.
