Publication of a Marriage Notice Leads
to a Hapoy Reunion.
From the New York World.
Pittsburg, Nov. 4. —The publication of
a marriage notice recently in the Leader
has led to the reunion of a father and son
after eighteen years of separation, during
which neither had had any tidings of the
other.
Eighteen years ago there dwelt in an
humble farm house near Bargettstown the
family of William Maxwell, a well-to-do
agriculturist. There were father, mother
and three sons, the youngest Ralston, a
bright little chap of ten years, besides
Nancy and James Ralston, the grandparents
of the Maxwell boys. Ralston, or “Rollie,”
as he was nicknamed, was of a roving
nature, aid from his earliest childhood
yearned for the bu ,y life of the city. One
fine morning before daybreak, and when
the family were all abed, he packed his
valise and stole away, bidding good-by to
home and friends. That morning when the
Maxwell family gathered around the break
fast table there was a vacant chair. A
search through the house and over the
Sarin failed to reveal any trac9 of the
truant son. Thinking that the boy was not
•ar off the family at ill'st paid little atten
tion to his absence, but when the country
berm to don its cloak of night a search
was instituted for tbo missing youth. But
In taat uncultivated country it was like
nunting for a needle in a haystack” search
ing for a lost child, and, after many weary
tours, the hunt was abandoned until the
following day. Not an eyelid dosed in that
lOme that night. Mother’s heart was almost
broken; tho father’s anxiety was too great
jor tears; only the children could find relief
t giving vent to their pent-up grievings,

FORTUNES UNDER TER WaV2S.
Some of the Big Wrecks of Costly
Treasure.
The close of the last century, a writer in
CasseWs Magazine says, seems to have
been very prolific in wrecks. The British
frigate De Brook, lost in a storm off Lewes,
in the United States, in 1793, is stated to
have had on board no lew than $52,000,000
worth of specie and jewels, taken from an
intercepted Spanish fleet while on her
voyage to Halifax, and with it were
also taken 200 prisoners. The latter
were in irons on the lower decks
when the vessel foundered and all were lost.
Many years afterward (in 1881) search was
being actively prosecuted by a diving com
pany for the purpose of recovering this ej>e
cie, the result of which has not yet been
chronicled. I: would scarcely be believed
that valuables have been recovered uearly
330 years from tho date of the wreck, but
nevertheless it is recorded that the good ship
Harleem. which was driven ashore at Table
Bay in Mav, 1648, and became a total
wreck, had on board many cases full of cu
riosities and antiquities for sale to European
museums. These cases contained idols, rare
china, glass, silver, etc.
As lately as 1883 salving operations wore
rewarded by tho recovery of several of
these articles. The china was not at al[
injured by having been 233 years under the
sea, but the silver articles had suffered
considerably. Another very notable case—
not only for the amount of treasure on
board, but also for the big “windfall” for
the salvers—is that of the Tnetis, a Britii i
frigate, wrecked off the coast of Brazil in
1830 with £162,000 in bullion on board.
The hull went to pieces, leaving
the treasure at fee bottom in five or
six fathoms of water. The admiral of the
Brazil station and the captains and crews
of the four sloops-of-war were engaged for
eighteen months In recovering tho treasure.
The service was attended with great skill,
labor and danger, and four lives were lost.
A good deal of litigation was the result, as
disputes arose between the parties as to tho
amount of reward for the salvors. The
court of admiralty awarded £17,000, the
privy council £29,000 aud £25,800 for ex
penses.
In the reign of James 11. n very success
ful salving expedition took placed A rich
Spanish vessel, which had Is en lost on the
coast of South America, rowarded her sal
vors with no less than £300,000, stated to
have been forty-four years at the bottom
of the sea. A medal wns struck iu honor
of this event in 1687. One of the
most recent cases of ruccessful salving
operations is that of the Spanish mail
steamer Alphonse XII., bound from
Cadiz to Havana in February, 1885, and
sunk off Point Gando, Grand Canary, in
twenty-five fathoms of water. She had on
board treasuro valued at £103,000. The
underwriters who had insured the vessel
organized a salving expedition, which was
dispatched to the scene of the wreck in the
following May. It is reported that a few
months later most of the specie was recov
ered.
