John F. Dunn for Senator—The Won
ders of the Blue River.
Bt. Augustine, Nov. 17.— Among lead
ing democrats here, there is noticeable a
growing sentiment in favor of John F.
Dunn of Mari n county for senator. He
appears to be the choice of the alliance and
progressive men.
The wonders cf the Blue river and the
phosphate mines of Dunnellon are being
explored by the editor of the St. Augustine
Sews, a winter edition of the Saratoga and
Richfield Springs (N. Y.) Society Journal.
Mrs. A. if. Mascotte, who is 001 respondent
for the Philadelphia Times and Home Jour
nals of New York and Boston; Miss Laura
Woodward, the Jacksonville. Tampa and
Key West railway artist, are also at Duu
neilort.
Marcus Conant of Mayporf, Fla., was the
successful bidder for work and material on
the Anastasia and the North Beach jetties,
St. Augustine harbor,
sfilaj. VV. H. Eckles and his clerk, C. B
Eckles, have just completed the payments
to the United States troops at St. Francis
barracks here. According to recent laws
the paymaster should pay the troops every
month.
The Silver Springs, Ocala and Gulf Rail
road Company is extending its east line
from Dunnellon toward the Gulf coast.
Tampa is most likely to be the western
terminus. The line for the past three year 9
has maintained its west end at the Homo
rassa river. It will soon build east to
Palatka.
•'Beatrice” (Mrs. Dr. Mareau), who bag
become so popular as a writer of fiction
touching on social life at Ocala, in her story
of the ‘‘Tragedies of Oak Hurst,” printed in
the deceased Jacksonville Critic, has had
her story put in book form.
Johnny VVhitaev and Lawrence Pomar,
two boys, were, on Saturday night, startled
by a whizzing sound over their heads, and
on looking in the direction of tns noise saw
a large bird strike against the wall of the
market and fall to the ground. It proved
to be a large water fowl—the “tern.” It is
now at Vedder’a museum, strutting about
apparently contented.
CIRCUS DAY AT VALDOSTA.
Several Men Fill Dp With Whisky and
Try to Butcher Each Other.
Valdosta, Ga., Nov. 17.— French &
Co.’s circus exhibited here to-day, and was
attended by the usual largo crowd of people
from the surrounding county. The num
ber of drunks and fights were somewhat
above the average.
Buck Ellington was severely cut twice in
the back of the neck by Thomas Dampier,
in the menagerie of the circus. Ellington is
a merchant and turpentine man, doing
business at Argyle, on the Savannah.
Florida and Western railway. Dampier
is a farmer living near Ous
ley, in this county. Ellington
claims that the cutting was unprovoked,
anil Dampier claims that Ellingtou jostled
over his wife and child. Dampier was ar
rested and iocked up, but afterward gave
bond to answer to the charge of assault
with intent to murder. Dank Terry, who
assisted in Dampier’s arrest, also came very
pear receiving a knife thrust, but escaped
with a slight scratch on the neck.
FARMERS FALL OUT.
Another sensation was caused later in the
day by John Hodges trying to shoot Wash
Bostwiok. Both parties aro farmers from
from Berrien county, and it is said that an
old lend was at the bottom of the affair.
Alanen Corbett, of Hunt & Corbett,
struck John Lofton over the head with a
billiard cue. Loftou was creating a dis
turbance in tho saloon, having bought a
bottle if whisky and refusing to pay for it,
and scattering things around generally.
Corbett says he had to serve four negroes
the same way this morning before break
fast.
Tho lockup is full of drunken and disor
derly inou to-mght.

LYNCHESBB STORM A JAIL.
Baxley's Marshal Opens Fire on the
Mob and They Return it,
Baxley, Ga., Nov. 17. —Jesse Crummey,
a woll-kcown citizen of this county, who
lived four miles from hero, died suddenly
Sa'urday morning. His death was alleged
to have resulted from strychnine poisoning.
Ho drank irom a bottle of alcohol. Sus
picion pointed to Charlie Hines, a colored
man, as the perpetrator of the crime.
Hines was arrested and lodged in jail. Last
n:cht a gang of armed men went to the
jail and were making rapid headway in
reaching the prisoner’s cell when his
screams tor help avou -ed the citizens.
THE MARSHAL OPENS FIRE.
When Town Marshal Lang awoke, and
had time to take in the situation, he opened
nro on the crowd from the upper window
of a two-story building near the jail,
where he slept. The gang immediately re
turned tii ' fire and oontinued to shoot in
lie direction of the marshal and into tho
ail, until probably fifty shots were fired,
jy that time the citizens were fully aroused
ana a determined party organized, and, ad
vancing to the jail, found the band had dis
persed. Sheriff Branch left with the
prisoner to-day for the Brunswick jail, and
tnei people now breathe easier. Peter Crosby,
an ther negro, has been implicated in the
eed, and has been arrested and placed in
]a,i here. The jail will be well guarded to
night.

There are some patent
medicines that are more
marvelous than a dozen
doctors’ prescriptions, but
they're not those that pro
fess to cure everything.
Everybody, now and then,
feels “ run down,” “ played
out." They’ve the will,
but no power to generate
vitality. They're not sick
enough to call a doctor,
but just too sick to be
well. That’s where the
right kind of a patent
medicine conies in, and
does for a dollar what the
doctor wouldn’t do for less
than five or ten.
We put in our claim for
Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical
Discovery.
We claim it to be an un
equaled remedy to purify
the blood and invigorate
the liver. We claim it to
be lasting in its effects, crea
ting an appetite, purifying
the blood, and preventing
Bilious, Typhoid and Mala
rial fevers if taken in time.
The time to take it is when
you first feel the signs of
wcanness and weakness. The
time to take it, on general
principles, is NOW.
Rail and cp.ossiib.
Anew rule went into effect on the Michi
gan Central road Nov. I, which would
greatly accommodate the traveling salesmen
it adopted by the roads genornliy. Up to
the present time lc has been customary for
the traveling salesman to pay excess bag
gage charges at each station where they
stopped. By the new rule ou that road the
excess for the entire trip on the road is paid
at the first s ation, and there is no further
trouble about tho matter.
General Superintendent W. N. Marshall
of the Savannah, America; and Mont
gomery railroad reports his road in good
shape, and work ou the extension to Mont
gomery is progressing vary rapidly. The
company has just completed an iron bridge
over the Flint river, aud are building iron
bridges across the Oconee river in Georgia
and the Chattahoochee river on the state
lioe. This latter bridge will bring the road
into Alabama. It is being constructed at
Fitzgerald’s landing, abd will be finished
within five months. The Savannah, Ameri
cus and Montgomery railroad will be
finished to Montgomery by June or July of
next year. It is already completed in
Georgia, and thirty-seven miles of road-bed
have been graded in Alabama, twenty
four miles being east of Hurts
boro and thirteen west of that place. Large
forces are at work on the grading, which
is being finished very rapidly. When com
pleted to Montgomery the road will be J 57
miles long. This will be the distance be
tween Savannah and Montgomery. The
earnings for tho Savannah, Americus and
Montgomery rood during October show up
well. With 172 miles in operation, the
earnings for the month were *51,550, or
nearly *3OO per mile. The expenses were 47
per cent, of the earnings, leaving the net
earnings at 53 per cent., which is abetter
showing, Capt. Marshall claims, thau auy
other road in Georgia, as well as the best
record per mile of auy road in the state.

A Negro Who Assaulted a White Wo
man Swung Off by Citizens.
Birmingham, Nov. 17.—Some weeks ago
a negro outraged an old lady named Mrs.
Calhoun near Wood station, on the dummy
line near Bessemer. Several men were
arrosted on suspicion and taken before her
for identification, but she said each time
that they were not her assailant. Yesterday
a negro named Henry Smith was taken
to her, and she Instantly pronounced
him to be the man. He was taken off by
the citizens who had Mm in charge, and
this morning his dead body was found
dangling to a tree near by. He was cut
down and buried there.

government, died at his residence here this
morning after an illness of several weeks.
The immediate cause of his death was com
