BBWARB OF DRUGS. How to Get to Sleep Without Their Assistance. BaoOKLT*. N. Y., Not. 29.—As 1 look over my correspondence, with a view t> selecting the subject which seems to possess the greatest interest for my readers, I am amazed at the number o£ persona who ‘ ‘do not sleep o’ nights ” A gentleman writes from Augusta that both he and his wife tried the devitalizing process for several nights, and his wife, who had been a poor tle-psr for years, was much helped by "the peculiar and —excuse me for saying it ridiculous exercises.” But he received no benefit whatever, and is, consequently, very much discouraged, ami thinks that he will be compelled to resort to chloral or morphine for relief. I beg of him not t) do this, for l am confident that there are natural ways of promoting sleep if he will only have a little more patience. lam acquainted with a lady of this city who began to take mor phine for insomnia by the quarter grains three vears ago. She now takes twenty to tfc rty grains a day, and these doses are said to be absolutely necessary to keep her from insanity. With some temperaments morphine acts like a charm for a little bile. But the absolute destruction of both mind and body is tae price of keeping up the charm. My correspondent says that he does not drink wine nor liquors, nor does he use tobacco in any form. He is careful about his diet, takes regular and tiring ex ercise in the open air, and does cot study or write evenings. ••I go to bed in a dark, well ventilated room.” be adds, "and try to think pleasant thoughts.” I should not be surprised if the trouble could be traced straight to this endeavor. For some physical or mental cause this patient formed the habit of not sleeping. 't his at last became unendurable, and ho be gan to study his stomach and hi3 nervous system, and endeavor to live according to hygienic principles. But the habit of in somnia, once formed, is the most difficult of all habits to break, excepting al ways the morphine habit and similar habits of self indulgence. The original cause of sleeplessness may b? removed, but the nerves, tuose tiny and all powerful tiodily sentinels have taken the alarm from the spirit, aud a state of fear ts inaugurated which is fatal to rest. “I have not dspt in a long time,” the mind remarks as the subjoct prepares for bed. "And be cause you haven’t,” the nerves respond, "I am very much afraid that you wili not get a nap to-night." This is usually quite enough with a Rauai tive person, and after all it is only the sensi'ive who are victims of sleeplessness. The piliow is punched, the light is turned cut, and with a sigh the sleep seeker stretches himself out. If he feels a wave of sle p approaching, bo is so apprehensive that it will not roll over hint in sufficient force to steal his senses away that he scapes it altogether. Who of us that have suffered from insommia can fail to appre ciate this expectation of the sleepy wave, and the aggravating action of the nerves in reference to it. Now, there are a few per sons with whom 1 am acquainted, who have Learned to turn off thought as they turn elf the gas in their bed room. I can do this say seven times out of ton very successfully, hut never after I have started a train of thought. I’leasaut fancies after retiring are quite as fatal to sleep as unpleasant ones. To give an intelligent description of the process of turning off thought currents is, Isuppu e, quite out of the question. To begin with, £ assure the rampant aud domi neering something to which wo give v arious names that I have no use for it. I posi tively decline to think on any subject whatever. When the little demons begin to bob up with their suggestions, as they are always sure to do, I nip ’em in the bud, so to speak. Even a thought, which is the strangest thing in the universe, can te successfully snubbed, To count monot rnously one two, one two, in time with the respiratory process, is my favorite way of going to sleep. If this monotony is inter rut ted by a reminiscence, a plait, a detail of business, then the brain must be emptied again and the process recommenced. I know that this practice will generally suc ceed if the insomnia victim will give himself to the task. It will boat all opiates, drugs and bromides. It will not, of course, be of much service in c.so of dissipation in either food or drink, and wifi not act in lieu of proper exorcise. But, when the nerves only are rampant it will work, and does work, as I can testify. A Virginia mother wants a receipe for biking beans. New England fashion, aud a Baltimore lady asks for u recipe for old fashioned rusk, and a most bewitching; girl correspondent desires to know a way of Basing a pretty hat out of nothing. To the beans first—Take a quart—the Knallest size is the best—aud put to soak over night in three quarts of water. In the morning drain off the water aud parboil for fifteen minutes. Then pour off this water and add boiling water and a pound "Ipork which has beau washed, scraped Rtfi notched, and a little salt. Til till the beans begin to Back, then pour iuto a bean pot or wppan, placing the pork in the middle, bait a little more and pour over the top two great spoonfuls of molasses. Bake wveral hours, the longer the better, being sure to keep them moist by the addition of boding water if needed. Old-fashioned nil: is made as follows: A qsartof sifted flour, a little salt, a cup of sugar, two eggs and a Fieischmann’s yeast wke. Dissolve the latter in a little warm ,! o*, 01 ' 9at ! ' lO eggs and add enough warm Muk to make a soft dough. Set to rise. ' “ 4n I'kht add a pound of stoned raisins, a utile cinnamon, a pinch of cloves, a little More sifted flour if necessary, put into pans f™ raise once more. When very light ta,,e in a moderate oven. This requires neither so la nor baking powder, and is de licious. *; m F Kiri correspondent can buy a be “i,aß hat or toque frame for 15 cents, M.. cover it with felt—which is very inex pensive-making ih hull on top, she will we something stylish. Stiff loops of perhaps she has some old velvet in l house—are much used. Wings are * r T fashionable and it doesn't much mat wcat kind of wings. A touch of c lor mil i noe^ ond yellow, if the complexion - f ‘ Bta nd it, is the favorite shade. Some etas prettiest hats I have seen this fall cahen “rag bag hats” by their owners, wse they have nought nothing new. Eleanor Kikk. & kailroad meeting. That woman had tried it. And it’s a medi cine which makes itself felt in tonirig up the system and correcting irregularities as soon as its use is begun. Go to your drug store, pay a dollar, get a bottle and try it—try a second, a third if necessary. Before the third one’s been taken you’ll know that there’s a remedy to help you. Then you’ll keep right on and a cure ’ll come. But if you shouldn’t feel the help, should be disap pointed in the results you’ll find a guarantee printed on the bottle-wrap per that'll get your money back for you. How many women are there who’d rather have the money than health? And “Favorite Prescription” pro duces health. Wonder is that there’s a woman will ing to suffer when there’s a guaranteed remedy in the nearest dr my store. Local Record for the Morning News. Mclvkr A Baker, Proprietors. Gentlemen —I have suffered for years with a kind of tetter, or breaking out all over my body, and at times these small pimples would terminate in boils. While traveling in the south last year 1 had occasion to try a bottle of P P. P., which was recommended to mo by a friend, and to my surprise it helped me so much that I got six bottles more, and, after taking the full contents. I felt better than I hau since the be ginning of my trouble, and, while I have no symptoms of the disease returning, lam still using the wonderful blood medicine at intervals, and aru fully satisfied that I will be entirely cured of a disease that for fifteen years has troubled me. I cannot express my gratitude to you for so wonderful a benefactor as your P. P. P. (Prickly Ash, Poke Root and Potassium). I am yours truly, JACAT PETERS, ■s-Adc. Traveling Salesman. Savannah. Ga.
