The public schools of of Augusta have

W. W. Howard was thrown from his
buggy at Augusta, Saturday, but escaped
serious injury.

J. W. Jones, a farmer living near Bar

Crawfordvilie Dispatch: A few days ago

with pearly white teetu. The teeth would

for a charter for the Central City Gr eery
Company. The corporation will do business
in Macon, and the capital stock is #40,1)00,
with the privilege of increasing it to $200,-
000. The incorp rators are 8. Mayor, W.
B. Watts and James D. Stetson of Hawk
iusville and B. T. Adams of Macon. The
Macon me über is one of the firm of Ham,
Adams & Cos.
Shearer Casber had a painful accident at
the glassworks at Augusta, Saturday night.

glass from the furnace, while not in use
rests upon an irou stand iu front of the
furnace, widch is known as the ‘'dog.”
This ‘'dog” stands on two legs and was
accidentally o. erturned by Casber iu picking
up the hoe. The heavy dog fell on his foot
and split his great toe from end to and. It
was a painful accident, and a vehicle was
sacured and the injured man sent to his
home, where he could receive the needed
attention.
It looks as thoujth the state would have to
levy an additional tax. The finance com
mittee finds that the tendency ol’ the legis
lature is to greatly increase the appropria
tions. For iustauce, Mr. Jackson’s common
school bill, now pending, runs the school
uppertionment up to more than §1,000,000,
when it was but little over §700,000 this
year, including the poll tax Annin, Mr.
Holtzclaw has a bill rabking the military ap
portionment §25,000 instead of §7,500. And
there are other hills that seek to increase the
state’s annual outlay. Tiis being true, the
committee on finance finds that an addi
tional levy must be made.
Augusta Chronicle: Jdose Carter went
home Saturday night from his work, and as
he neared hu house, out in the “Territory,"
he heard screams issuing from his own
house. He rushed in and found Frank Bass,
another negro of burly fame, beating his
(Carter’s) wife with a walkingsiiek. Car
ter got his pistol and fired five shots at Baas,
one of which he tbit). s bit him on the finger,
but Carter’s wife claims that the wound on
Bass’ finger was caused by a bite wnich she
gave him. A police officer was noir the
scene at tbe time of the shooting anti rushed
In and arrested all the parties to the melee.
They were brought on to the court bousa,
and were remanded to jail—a rather solemn
reward for a husband who protects his
wife from assault and battery by another
man.

G. B. Coleman, a negro who went to
Tampa recently and was employed on the
'i am pa Bay hotel, dropped cead Saturday
while on his way to his work. It is sup
posed that he died of hicrt disease.
It is rumored that one of the ties' known

Among the exhibit* sent to Ocala from
Oviedo last Monday vena bushel of sweet

bushel was composed of fifteen potatoes.

T_ewifoof Bryan Burnett, living a few
miles south of Lake City, died very sud
denly, after retiring in perfect health, on
Friday evening of last week. Sna was
b ut 75 rears of ago and had not eom
pla ned. Her unmarried daughter. Miss
Susan Burnett, while iu conversation with
a visitor about noon Sunday fell forward
and immediately expired, without any
previous con plaint of illness. Bhe was
aged about 52.
A rumor is afloat that the Peace River
Phosphate Company lias been ordered to
move all their houses, wharves and all tbeir
belongi g* off t„e light-house reserve on
Gasparilla. It is said orders have been given
not to allow any boats to laud or take any
cargoes from the island, other then to let tho
Peace River Phoiphato Company move
what material they now have on the reserve.
Several hundred dollars have been expended
by this company building houses and
wharves at that place, which may have to be
torn down and moved off.
Kissimmee Leader: A serious cutting
affray occurred at Narcoossee last Tuesday
night. Jack Simmons and Mart Manning
became involved in a quarrel, when Tude
Kas endeavored to act as peacemaker.
Manning immediately drew n knife aud
stabbed Bass on t ie left side of the back, ex
tending under the arm. He tuen sltishtd

the heart. The third stroke severed the
muicles of the right arm to tho bone. The

handful of peanut candy he carried in his

his name was John Robinson.
