New York, Dec. o.—" The times are sim
mering and we must simmer with thorn,”
so says Crane, ia “The Senator,” and so say
we all of us who mingle with tho world of
people aad come to have an appreciation of
t ue b uy hurry in which everything is mov
ing.
All the girls were simmering last week,
and not only simmering but actually
steaming after the last now dec rrative fad.
please don't expect much, or you may lie
disappointed.
The fad was this. To obtain a pitcher of
biiv size and shape, the more odd and unique
ho better, then cover it with n. thick layer
of putty and orname -t it by st,eking acorns,
horse-shoe nails, broken bits of china,
nieces of cork, pencil stubs, stick-pins, cut
glass stoppers, seali g wax medallions aud
charms into the putty.
The whole affair is then gilded with two
coats of dull gilt, and, when dry, is ready
to adorn th > choicest corner of the chained
room in tho house. When the girls tirst
grasoed this new idea in all the intensity of
Us decorative reality, so great was the de
mand for putty that ail the artists’ material
shops laid in an extra supply, and thou ran
far short of the demand.
The commonest kind of ink bottles are
transformable into harlequin perfume
casks. After the ink has been drawn from
their depths the bottles a e cleaned and
painted ia stripes running from the neck of
the bottle down to the lower edgo. Tho
stripes are silver, gilt, bro ze. scarlet and
blue. A coat of varnish is added to the
scene and then perfumery i3 poured in, and
there is y >ur harlequin scent bottle.
Elliot Shephard, Georgo Vanderbilt, Jay
Gould, Seward Webb and all the other boys
were present tho first night of the flower
show at the Madison Square garden. All
classes and conditions cf people were at
tracted by the floral display. Gommon
people went because they loved flowers, and
for a few dimes c< uld enjoy the pleasure of
gazing uoon and smiling ulcoms that they
could never see anywhere else. Moneyed
people enjoyed it, because they learned so
much that was new to them in floral culti
vation.
The chrysanthemum was king, queen,
courtier and all the royal family combined.
N; thing like tho size and beauty of this
flower has ever before been seen. A single
flower made a corsage bouquet, and three of
them were as largo a center pieoe as a table
could fashionably carry. Many of the plants
were sold. One oft. era, the Mrs. AlpLeus
Hardy, retailed for $1,500 per plant.
Society people are stiil regretting the fact
that William Waldorf Astor has leased a
house in London and is about to remove
himself, goods, chattels, big bag, little bag,
bundle and bandbox, entertainments, big
dinners and all to that city. New Yorkers
do not wish lose so magnificent a host, and
it ia hoped that Mr. Astor will soon forget
the unappreciative American public’s
political snubs and roturn to the home of
the free and the land of the go-as-you
please.
When a voting woman has gone through
a course of figure development, rouudiug
the bust, hardening the muscles of the arms,
filling out the legs aud making the flesh
firm, she is not going to let tho results of
her efforts be hidden underneath a frock
whose fullness conceals all tho beauty of
shape that she has been to such trouble to
obtain. Her dress must fit like the paper on
the wait, and she must look as if she had
bein moulded into it. An evening dress of
tho period suggests a pair of Cghts, with
the legs made in one piece instead of being
divided. The wai tis more than skintight,
being drawn to the last degreo of snugne-s,
and it extends only high enough to hide the
“bosom’s voluptuous swell,” which we have
all read about in poetry.
A well-known young society woman, who
her stock of sensational enterprises
running low, actunily undertook to wear
live asps for bracelets, after the fashion of
Bernhardt in “Cleopatra.” It is well nigh
needless to lemark that tho fashion was so
unpopular that the woman had to abandon
it ere she had fully tried its effect upon a
large assemblage of people.
Mrs. Custer is one of the most widely
sought women in New York society.
Though bv no means a society woman, and
permanently saddened by the sad death of
the ge.ieral, sue frequently yields to the
importunities of friends and goes forth to
heo me the life and soul of the circle that
sue cao ses to e ter. Two clashes of society
holdout welcoming hands to this gifted
lady. The literary world, on account of the
excellent books that she hai added to their
libraries, and the social world, because her
r *B und family entitle her to enter its
domains.
!’ is said that Mrs. Custer suffers acutely
m writing ot her own and her husband’s
war expenrnces. Each pen stroke brings
hack the past as vividly as if days and not
yean; hail intervened between it and the
present. After au evening of such scenes
,tl tn her dead hero and love Mrs. Custer
retires to her room to walk the floor till
morning light.
ihe hygienic girl sheds all her clothes at
bight and puts on a night wrap to take the
Pace of the garments that she has worn
during the day. The day garments are
sung up anc i aired, and put on in the
morning fresh and sweet and un jaded by a
■gut s per.-onal association with tho body.

Mrs. Leslie refused to appear. The money
eas refunded at the box’offloe, and great
numbers of sirs. Le lie's friends adjourned
to her rooms at toe ll ggs House, wore an
informal reception was held. Mrs, Leslie
looked perfectly chormi ig ia pmk crepe.
Around her neck was aneckl ice much worn
by her, aad always greatly admired for its
value and unique brilliancy. It consists of
nine een diamonds as large as a silver dime,
exactly alike, and strung together so as me
to show any gold setting. Whenever she is
near New York Mrs. Le lie al ways tak -s a
rua to the city for a visit to her artistic
workshop in the Judge building, to wi.ich
she is devote ily attacaed.
Thomas Bailey Aldrich refused to write
Christinas or Thanksgiving odes, averring
that his muse caunot be restricted to time
and pdace. Its action must be spontaneous,
unfetteied, free.
The Connemara is another garment that
cannot be downei. It is so handy to slip
on, so comfortable when once on, s> con
venient ia concealing list season’s dress that
both soul a-id body cling to it with a great
clinging. The improved Counetnuras have u
band of eider down around the threat, and
are faced with a pretty contrasting color
bordered with eider down. Witt these
cloaks is worn a toque always, never a big
hat. The back of the toque is trimmed
high, and feather bands border the edge.
\ cry fashionable, indeed, are the men’s
coats with belt and cape, lined with scarlet
or, better still, tor cold weather, chamois
skin.
One of the most valuable collections of
diamonds in New York city is owned by
Mrs. \V Pitney, wife of the ex-Secretary of
the Navy. idhe has an exquisite d.amond
necklace, worth $?o,000, and solitaires ns
large as hazel nuts. One single diamond,
set in a pm, is reputed to be worth SIO,O K).
The entire collection is appraisal at a out
SIOO,OOO. Many of these gems were the
gift of Mrs. Whit ey’s brother, a western
oil king who adores his sister. O-ie of this
generous brother’s gifts was the mansion on
the corner of Fifty-seventh street and Fifth
avenue, which is the Whitney’s winter
reside.ice. At another time it was a check
for SIOO,OOO, “to be used in entertaining
friends.”
Mrs. William Astor has a wonderful dia
mond necklace. It is six strings doep and is
set with no gold visible, giving the dia
monds the appearance of being strung to
gether. Mr. Astor has lately had it en
tirely reset and has replaced all the smaller
and inferior stones with diamonds of sur
passing brilliancy, Mrs. Astor rarely wears
it, as she is not overfund of personal adorn
ment. Both she and Mr. Astor, however,
rejoice in the posses ion of beautiful jewels,
and are willing to pay a fortune anv day in
the week to obtain them, taking the same
pride in their ownership that they would
take in a beautiful piece of Haviland or
Sa'suma.
For some reason, not fully explained, all
the gray half-mourning frocks are made all
in one piece, running from the shoulder
around the waist down to the bottom of the
dress. In this way thoy are a little dressier
than the plain wuist-and-basq ie style and
are more becoming to figures both thick and
thin. Gray velvet sleaves, very full, are
also added, or sleeves of any thick ma
terial.
Those who do not care to buy fur sleeves
may find these full velvet sieoves servicea
ble to wear w ith the natty little capes that
everybody owns nowadays.
Jenness-Miller awoke the other dav to
find herself famous. In a brilliant, scintil
latiug moment she thought of devising a
gown with adjustable waist and skirt, war
ranted to fit all figures through all the fluc
tuations and variations of increasing adi
pose. A word to the Jennoss-Miller dress
maker and the gown was fashioned. When
first made it looks quiet, dignified aad ordi
nary. a sleepy sort of dress that no one
would look at twice.
But arouse that irock and It is awake all
over. A little rubber band loosens the
sieoves, the collar becomes freer in the same
beautiful way. The waist kuows a mar
velous elasticity by means of ribbons and
bauds and tapes, and as for the front of the
skirt, there is absolutely no limit to its
adaptability. The woman has yet to be
found who, by any feat of prowess, can get
beyond the compass of this all encompassing
garment. Surely the halcyon days have
come. It is time once more to bo plunged
in darkness and left to grope our way back
into the light of modern improvements.
The full blaze of this last new glory will be
overcoming and overpowering to the world
of women.
Please get us oie c>f these gowns. They
are. like Jamaica ginger, handy to have in
the house.
Walt Whitman is poor, old and para
lyzed. He can no longer write. Both mind
and body forbid it. But be occasionally
sends his greeting and good wishes to some
paper, and, in turn, is rewarded by as large
a chock as the editor seas fit 10 write. Ha
and Hubert Ingersoll are devotsd friends,
though differing widely in creed.
When you make eboealate now of an
evening, sprink'e a little cinnamon on top
after the chocolate has bean poured in the
cup. It adds the same piquancy and charm
that nutmeg adds to lemonade, Umon juice
does to vichy, sliced lemon does to tsa, or to
come nearer home, that salt does to an egg.
When your best young man is coming to
see you. you will want your mouth and
chin to be os presentable as possible. Pre
pare them after this fashion: Rinse the
mouth thoroughly with cemphor and water.
Then rub alcohol lightly upon the lips and
chin, rub hard with the towel, treat to a
wash of perfumery, and rub the lips with
a rough cloth and then again with per
fumery. Now, rinse the mouth with wiutor
green or any sweet smelling herb.
The boys get themselves up lovely with
bay rum and cardamon seeds. If very ele
gant, they mix a few drops of oil of violet
in the shaving water. Haven’t you de
tected it once in a while when you've been
right near dear Charley’?
Of course you have, dear. You needn’t
answer. Console your pangs of conscience
by committing to memory the Spanish
proverb, “All the world is made jus ; like
our own family." Carrie Careless.

A Poverty-stricken Millionaire C
This seems a paradox, but it is ex
plained by one of New York’s richest
men. “I don’t count my wealth ia
dollars,” he said. “ What are all my
possessions to me, since I am a victim
of consumption ? My doctor tells me
that I have but a few mouths to live,
for the disease i3 incurable. I am
poorer than that besrw&r yonder.”
“ But,” interrupted the friend to
whom he spoke, “consumption ran
be cared. If taken in time. Dr.
Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery
will eradicate every vestige of the
disease from your system.” “I’ll
try it,” said the millionaire, and he
did; and to-day there is not a health
ier, happier man to be found any
where. The “Discovery” strikes at
the seat of the complaint. Consump
tion is a disease of the blood —is
nothing more nor less than lung
serofula—and it must aud does yield
to this wonderful remedy. “ Golden
Medical Discovery” is not only an
acknowledged remedy for that terri
bly fatal malady, when taken in time
and given a fair trial, but also for all
forms of Scrofulous, Skin and Scalp
Diseases, as White Swellings, Fever
sores, Hip-joint Disease, Salt-rheum,
Tetter, Eczema, Boils, Carbuncles,
Erysipelas and kindred ailments.
