BAIL AND CRQ3STIS.
Work has begun at lying the founda’ion
cf the new freight extension of the Central’s
freight delivery warehouse at Macon. The
building will be about 3UO feet long, ex
tending from the present building to Pine
at-eet.
The Savannah and Tybee railway will
put into effect anew schedule to-day. The
only change will be in the Saturday 5:10
o'clock a. m. train from the island,"which
will leave at (5 o’oi :ck a. in., and the 2:30
c mock p. m. Sunday train from Savannah,
which will leave at 2 o’clock instead of 2:3d
o'clock.
It is understood that final surveys are be
ing mads from Camden to Asheville, X. c.,
for the construction of the Camden, Chest r
and Gaffney City railway, and that the
contracts will be let about the first of the
new year. This road when completed will
give Charleston anew line through to the
mountains.
Judge Alien Fort will be railroad com
missioner of Georgia from Jan. 1, in place
of Hoa. Alex 8. Erwin. He was born in
Lumpkin, Stewart county, Ga.. in 1549,
says the Chronicle, He graduated at Ath
ens in 1860, and shared first honor with
Sam Spencer of Columbus, afterward
manager of the Baltimore and Ohio rail
road. He read law with Judge Willis
Hawkins, of Americas, and in 1868 com
menced to p: active. In 1872 he was sent to
the legislature from Sumter county. In
18 1 6 he was a delegate from Georgia
to the Tildea convention in St. Loui-.
He was one of the framers of the
“Fort-Rankin” bill, which established the
railruad commission law of Georgia. Gen.
Toombs wrote to Allen Fort admiring the
strength and completeness of the law. Mr.
Fort was a member of the board of man
agers on t! e part of tho House in the Ren
froe impeachm mt trial in 1879. In Novem
ber, 1882, he was elected judga of the su
perior court of tho southwestern circuit, to
succeed Judge Crisp, He is still on t-ie
bench.
