captured at Childereburg, Ala, Saturday,

It is reported that Seaborn Crow, a gen
tleman who has been run log a store at
Roswell station, was imbued of #1,500 Mon
day night by some unkuown parties. He
was on the point of leaving Atlanta for the
west when the news reached him.
At Columbus, Monday, Walter Going
was picking the powder from a dynamite
cartridge when it exploded in his hand,
tearing and lacerating tne flesh of his left
hand so os to render the amputation of the
two first flnge sand thumb necessary.
The special term of Muse -gee superior
court convened M nday, Judge Martiu pre
siding. After charging the jury tbs court
adjourned until Monday to aliow the grand
jury to return indictments. There are
seven murder c& es to be tried, and
Judge Martin is dl qualified in all but one.
Mrs. John M. Weigle of Augusta excit
edly called the attention of her husband to
a little animal which was sporting on her
sitting-room hearth Monday night. Mr.
Weigie soo - saw that it was a pretty flying
squirrel He tried to capture it, but it es
caped from the room and was overhauled
by the dogs. There was no possible way
for the little fellow to get into the room ex
cept down the chimney in the face of a hot,
burning coal fire.
The Macon Volunteers are in better
financial condition, and in every wav more
prosperous than over before. During the
past year two bonds of #I,OOO each have
been retire.i, tbe armory has been well
p luted and improved inside, and ninety
five of tbe tiest uniforms in lieorgta have
been purchased. The company now has a
roll of 116 meu, of shorn ninety-five are
uniform members—an increase of forty
during the year. The income has been
SB,OOO.
Tbe House postoffice committee has re
ported favorably tbe bill to give all towns
whoso gross postofflea receipts exceed $5,000
a free delivery service. Tbe bill will piss.
The Georgia towns that now have no free
delivery, but will got it by this bill, are:
Albauy, Americas, Athens, Marietta and
Tboiuosville. Tbe Alabama towns are
Bessemer, Eufaula, Florence, Gadsden,
Huntsville, Talladega and Tuscaloosa. Tbe
South Carolina towns are Spartanburg aud
Bum ter.
J. B. Reese of the Young Men's Christian
Association of Athens has in his possession
a watch that has a queer history. The
watoh was originally tbe property of a
raftsman on the Columbia, who pawned it
to a saloonkeeper to procure some red-eye
to alleviate tbe horrors of delerium treme is.
The saloonkeeper sold tne watch to a drum
mer out in lowa who committed suicide,
leaving the watch to a friend of Mr. Iteese’s,
from w ora Mr. Reese procured it It is
an excellent timepiece.
Tbe en tire side of tbe public square at
Gnenvillo was burned M-nday. The fire
broke out upstairs in tbe saloon of McOehee
Bros., iu the en:er of ibe soutn side of tbe
square. The flames quickly sproid east,
burning the shoe shop of Jacob Harris, t e
carriage repository of O. IV. McGehee, the
clotbing store of Gruchenakv & Cos., and
the warehouse of A kinso’n Bros. West,
tbe grocery store of I. D. Fincher, the saloon
of Charles Floyd, the grocery store of Harris
& Davis and the Hnr is corner, occupied by
Tom Kenor and J. T. Cato. At 5:30 o’clock
the fire was under control, Greenville
never saw such a fire. The entire south
side is gone, and not a dollar of insuranoe.
The buildings were all wooden and old. The
losses are estimated at about $16,000. M.
Davidson is the heaviest loser. His loss is
about $5,000. Atkinson Bros, are the next
heaviest losers. Their loss is a wooden
building and stock, $2,500. Two persons
were hurt by falling timbers.

Arlington Banner: It Beams there is a
regular band of horse thieves at work in
this section. Saturday morning a week ago
Mr. Marsha’l, who does the l-gging for
Carter’s saw-mill, got up to fiud all the
mules out of his lot, about twelve head, and
on the same night a band of gypsies missed
all they bad—four or live. All t ese were
found during the week, with the exception
of one mule belonging to Marshall, and he
was returned ytster lay by Jim Price, who
says he found him in Miller county.

Burd Kimball of Miller county had two
mules to get out, which were fouud ne ir
Edison. Eb Greer had a mule and cart
stolen from in front of Doc Segara the same
night. He had been driven several miles
and turned loose. Sid Farmer, a young
man living near Edison, was suspectsd of
the theft. He was arrested ad carried to
Blakely, where he confes-ed that he had
carried off t ,e team, savi g he thought the
mule would go back home after being
turned loose. C. C. Mansfield, the candi
date for clerk, drove into Morgan a few
evenings ago in a road carl and hitched bi-<
horse to one of the racks. When ha started
to go home he found bis horse gone and no
trace of him has yet been found.

A cricket club is being organized at Fort
Meade.
Florida’s birth rate is 34.8, the lowest of
of all the states by a fraction.
David Klinger, of St. Petersburg, has
received the appointment of constable for
that district.
J. H. Bagiev, former resident of Pensa
cola, well known in railroad circles, died at
Moss Poi. t, Miss., a day or two ago.
G. W. Powers, formerly sawyer at the
East Apopka mills, charge of the
Windermere Lumber Company’s mill at
Lake Butler.
D. B. Givens, W. A. Carter and C. W.
Stevens have been appointed by Judge
Mitchell masters in chancery for Hills
borough county.

Thomas C. Watson, Pensacola’s enterpris
ing real estate man, will hereafter be ad
dressed as Col. Watson, he having received
from Grand Hire John C. Underwood his
commission as lieu onant colonel and special
ade-de-camp for the state of Florida of the
Patriarchs Militant, I. O. O. F.
Gen. O. O. Howard of New York, depart
ment oointnautler of the Atlantic division,
is in the state inspecting tbe fortifications
of this coast. He will go to Cuba this week,
after which he will return to St. Augustine
for the season. Gen. Howard is se ond in
command of the United Stales army.
An important event iu army circles will
transpire on Jan. 22, in which tho people of
Florida feel some s ecial interest. It is the
retirement from active service of Brig. Gen.
Stephen V. Benet, the efficient chief of
ordnancs of tbe United State* army, a poel
t on which be has most ably filled since June,
1874. Gen. Benet was born iu this state,
and from her# entered the United States
military academy at West Point, N. Y., in
July, 1845, graduating with distinction in
the class of J uly, 1849.
Tarpon Springs Truth: A bad wreck oc
curred on the Orange Belt, about two miles
south of town, last Thursday morning. Tho
express train from tbe north ran into two
cows, which caused tbs locomotive to leavo
the track and partly roll down tbe euibank
mont.The tender was thrown across tuejtrak
and the steps on tbe front express car were
torn off. Fortunately no one was injured.
It was said that anew engineer was run
ning the locomotive, and when he saw the
cows reversed the engine, and, not being
under enough headway when the cows were
struck to knock them off tbe track, they
went under the locomotive with the fore
going result.
Gainesville Sun: The case of homicide,
whicb occurred in the western part of the
county on Saturday evening lust, in which
Albert Stroble lost* his life at the bands of
Mr. Howard, has since been inve.-tigated.
All the evidence went to show that tho
shooting was purely accidental, aud Mr.
Howard was accordingly discharged. The
meu were good friends 'and had been hunt
ing during the day, and after it became too
dark to shuot game they were playing,
when the gun iu Howard’s hands was acci
dentally discharged, the contents lodging
la Btroble’s breast, resulting in death in a
few minutes. It was a most unfortunate
accident, but no blame whatever attaches
to Mr. Howard.

all reliable meo. The opening up of the
sponge tfiakes anew era in tho
history of TAf pon Springs. It means more
for our town than We now can realize.
