EAGLE AND PHSSNIX MILL.
The Annual Meeting of the Stock
holders and the Elections.
Columbus, Ga., Feb. 18.—The annual
meeting of the stockholders of the Eagle
and Phemx Manufacturing Company was
held here to-day. The following directors
were elected: William H. Young, Joseph
Peabody, and C. E. Battley all of Colum
bus; J. S. Bigsby, C. A Collier, and J 0
Warnock, all of Atlanta; L. A. Trammell
of Marietta, E. P. Dismukes of Florida, snd
J. E. Armour of Greensboro. Great In
terest has been felt in the election for some
time, and it has been asserted, with a de
gree of positiveness. byllarge stockholders
that CoL William H. Young would be
tired from tbe presidency. Messrs. Bigsby
Warnock and Collier voted a large ma
jority of the stock to-day.
THE BY-LAWS.
During tbe day a report was circulated to
the effect that the by-laws would be changed
to as to restrict the powers of the president
and bring the directors more actively iuto
the management of the mill than heretofore.
This report could not be officially confirmed’
but an impression prevails that there is
something in it. At the meeting of the
directors this afternoon Col. Young was re
elected president. Col. Young is widely
known as the father of successful manufact
uring in the south, and in spite of the fact
that he is advanced in years is still active,
energetic, and considered by a large ma
jority of the stockholders the best available
man for the Important position. The prop
erty of the company is worth $8,000,000.
A NEW TREASURER.
E. P. Dismukes was elected secretary and
treasurer, to succeed Alexander Young.
Mr. Dismukes is a banker of Quine*-. Fla.,
and a man of considerable means, fle wili
move to Columbus at once. Both stock
holders and directors will meet again to
morrow.
The published announcement that the
Eagle and Phemx would close up its sav
ings bank created considerable surpri-o,
but nothing like a panic, os no possible loss
to depositors can occur. The deposits in
the bank amount to more than $1,500,00(1,
and will be paid in bunds bearing six per
cent, interest. Small depositors can get
their cash.
THRASHER THREATENED.
Strong Testimony for tbs Defense In
the Gainesville Trial.
Gainesville, Fla., Feb. 18.—In the
trial of Thrasher to-day Mrs. Brown’s testi
mony was: “Witkovski said to me, ‘I know
Thrasher is your only protector, and if he
interferes in any way I will kill him.’ Mr.
Kerr also told me of threats made by
Witkovski to him against Mr. Thrasher, all
of whioh 1 communicated to him the day
before the killing.”
F. S. Kerr, whoso guest Mrs. Brown was
in New Yorx, said that ho had been told by
Witkovski that if Thrasher interfered with
him he would kill him, and he told her of
it. He added: “A deteotive came tomato
find out where she was. I refused to tell
him, saying I thought Witkovski was a
scoundrel who was persecuting her, and
under the laws of New York would have
been sent to Sing Sing.”
CARRIED A PISTOL.
Gordon Winges, the deputy sheriff, said the
deceased came to his camp during the yel
low fever, ana there carried a pistol similar
to the one produced in court, and said to be
Witkovski’s. “The two pistols, after tbe
shooting, were pointed out to me in a
drawer in the sheriff’s office.”
F. E. Hughes’ testimony was iu writing.
He said as soon as Thrasher was carried to
the sheriff’s office he called him in and
turned over two pistols, his own and the
other, which he said he picked up by Wit
kovskis’ side.
This closed the testimony for the defense,
and the afternoon was oonsumed in the
speech of Mr. Erases, who spoke two and a
half hours for the state. He was followed
by Mr. Leggett, who spoke for the defense.

The South Florida and Georgia Air

Quitman, Ga., Feb. 18.—Quitman is
stirred up on the subject of anew railroad
—the South Florida and Georgia Air Line,
to run from Quitman to Tampa. A meet

THE ROUTE UNDECIDED.
About a week ago G. Montague of
Chicago, president of the construction
company which is to build the road, was
hero and told the t eople that it wa3 settled
that the road would be built, but that they
had not yet decided on the route. Mr.
Montague, with several other Chicago
capitalists interested in the road, is to lie
here next month, when a route will be
decided on. Quitman will have a handsome
subscription to offer when they come.

It’s sometimes said patent
medicines are for the igno

this idea.
“ The people,” we’re told,

comes to medical science.”
Suppose they are! What
a sick man needs is not
knowledge, but a cure, and
the medicine that cures u
the medicine for the sick.
Dr. Pierce’s Golden Med

It says—“ I can cure you,
