A Bright Prospect Ahead for the Eater* crletr.g People Them Rocky Ford, on the Central read, at the junction of the Central and Sylvania rail road* in Scrlven county, is 6t> miles from Savannah, and os a shipping point is by no means an insignificant place. One mile from the town runs the Ogeecbee river, which separates the counties of Scriven and Bulloch. The splendid farming inter ests of the two counties, representing a soil capable of producing anything and almo t everything that grows on Georgia lands, including corn, wheat, oats, long and short staple cotton, and fruits of many varieties, are alone sufficient to make the little tc wn desirable. Added to this is the splendid pine forest, which insures a delight ful climate, aid, it is claimed by those who reside there, the best of health all the year round. The water is fairly good, but, like most of tbs low country, during a rainy season, there is a surplus of surface water. The railroad facilities of Rocky Ford em brace the old reliable Central, the Sylvania road, and the private road of RE. Foy & Cos. The volume of businee* handled by the station through these roads and the local wagon trade is immense daring the year. The Sylvania branch road, known as CoL Dell’s pet project, while not in first-class re pair, it is said is a good feeder to the Cen tral. It runs through a wooded sec-ion in terspersed with fine farms and neat farm houses, and puts the ancient but beautiful towfl of Sylvania In easy communication with the outside world. The private road of Foy & Cos. rung out from Roclty Ford across the Ogee oboe river into Bnlloch county, some ten miles or more, tapping qne of the finest lumber aud naval stores’ sections in Geor gia. The extensive lumbar and naval stores of this firm required something more than the usual way of transporting the products of their infill. Therefore, to do a successful business, they built them a railroad, which is thoroughly equipped with steel rails aud the most Improved engines. The enterprise of Foy 8c Cos. has bees the means of developing a fine section of the country and opening the way for people to go lq and settle up the country. Johnnie Foy, eon of the senior member of the firm, has charge of the Urge lpmber mills, while A. J. Brinson is in charge of their extensive naval stores business. The main line, including the numerous side tracks, covers a distance of fully twenty Elites of wall-hud track. The populaMbn claimed for Rocky Ford numbers about 890. and is made up of five, energetic peoplat The Methodists and Bap tists hare each a handsome church, which in architoctual beauty are in keeping with the progress of the town. A. J. Brinson, one of the splid men of the place, has just completed a handsome private residence. R. W. Calhoun, contractor and builder, who erected the Dasher residence at Guyton, re sides at this place, and the progress of the te*b in the way of building demands most of bis tithe, The mercantile bnejness of the place is dime by Messrs. Brinson &. Newton, W. 0. Barker & Sons., E. M. Barker and Cu:n ming & Wilson. j.'he Scriven County Lumber Company, run by Stillwell, Sullen & Cos., is located We. This extensive plaint has been iu ex istence for five years. F6t four years of the time It was in charge of L. D. Jonas, a gen tleman of experience, and one thoroughly posted in the luthber business. When Mr. Jones assumed charge this plant had but two little pl&inera, now it has four capable of dressing staff LB Inches square and 65 feet long, and Its daily capacity is about 66,00(1 feet. He attached to the plant, atgiut a year ago,a sash, doer ahd blind departmont, with a o&paeity of 2,000 pairs sash per week, 1,000 doOrs per week and about the same number of blinds. He also attached a turning scroll, sawiug and molding drjiartmout; a ,s<y pat ent portable houses, and takes contracts for framing large;factories for the foreign and domestic trade. Mr. Jones has ou exhibi tion near his residence a neat little portable office, made on the some plan of tho houses this concern constructed a few years ago for Meesrs. Bacon & 00., which were ex ported for the Panama Canal Company. This company has a complete plant in all its department*, and does an immense busi ness. W. C. Shepherd is at present superin tendent. Near the town is located the Rocky Ford bndkyard, run by Brinson & Heard, who turn out a superior brick, which is dis tributed all along the Central. This firm has an abundance of the best clay and uses the latest improved machinery. The school academy is fairly suppcr'ed by the citizens. Prof. Janies OaU is the principal and enjoys the confidence of the patrons. The Morniwo News’ Guyton correspond ent, while taking notes of the little town was reminded by a promihent citizen that Rocky Ford needs anew depot; that the in creased business of the place makes this a asooßsity. While this is true, the depot and telegraph office are not such as the busiueei vf the town would warrant. It js under stood that the fault or the failure to erect a new depot does not lie with the Central lailroad authorities. They have long had the erection of anew depo; in view at that point, bnt have been hampered wjthunfor teea obstacle thrown in their way by parties who cared more for personal interest than the convenience of the public. At one time a site was tendered the com pany by a public spirited citizen, and when the plans for the building were made some party who, perhaps, had a remote or slight interest In the donation, interposed objec tions and prevented tho consummation of thei arrangement, which deprived the town of better depot facilities. It was then sug gested that the company use the same depot the, but the owner of the premises, think ing there was a small-sized gold mine be neath it, has asked compensation accord ‘hgiy. Thus the town is without proper depot facilities. Louisville, Ga. , Feb. 28.— There was a public meeting here yesterday for the pur pose of hearing W. W. Pemble explain the aims and purposes of the Southern Inter state Immigration Bureau. Most of the leading business men of the town were p~e.‘nt Capt. J. H. Polhill, the chairman, introduced Mr. Pemble, who is the organizer of branches er bureaus 1 for the states of Georgia, South * Carolina and Florida. Mr. Pemble stated that he bad organized a number of bureaus through out Florida and South Carolina, and had just recently orgar lzed one In Augusta.
