that alliance conference.
Tie Object of It, and Interesting Par
ticulars Concerning It.
Editor Morning Sews: Permit me, as an
aiaanceman, to tnank you for your impar
tial and well-tempered editorials on the
a.Uanoe complicatiea, growing out, as
alleged, of the.conference of alliaaoemea at
the executive mansion.
Biased and unfounded statements have
been male concerning that conference.
Those statements have been industriously
pr mulgated to influence the judgment of
aliiancemen in the state. Ma iy have un
thougbtedly suffered themselves to be com.
nutted to a verdict of "not guilty,” without
ku .wing what the charges were.-against the
alliance officials named in the conference.
A simple statements of the facte, how
ever. will show how baseless are the allega
tions against the conference and its mem
bers, and the motive for "endeavoring to
stultify the opinion of alliance members
and stifle the formulation of charges against
certain alliance officials.
The allegation that the conference was
called without authority, made to invali
date the action of the conference,
is completely refuted by Mr. R. L. Burts.
He only wrote to four aliiancemen
individually and not as secretary of the
state alliance. As only two of these came,
and there were ten times that number of
aliiancemen present, the utter falsity of the
allegation is apparent. There was no effort
made to get aliiancemen to attend a meet
ing called by authority, nor did any one so
understand it. Those present came in their
individual, sovereign right to co- suit upon
matters of vital interest. There is no neces
sity for any allianceman to ask any official
of the order for permission to meet and con
fer upon matters of importance.
The attempt is made to decry the con
ference by strictures upon those actually
present, and by reporting others present who
were not. Hon. J. T. Olive and Rev. J.
I). Smith were not present. The members
of the conference never stated that these
two men were present, nor authorized any
statement of the kind. The truth is, by
eavesdropping and stealth, a no-alliance
iiiao obtained a meager and incorrect ac
count of the meeting and ptblished it.
Right here let alliancemei stick a
pin. During the canvass Ur members
of the general assembly, it vas charged
that President Livingston had made a cer
tain compact by which he wasto go to con
gress and a certain man be eleJtel an officer
of the general assembly. That charge was
denied at the time, jet it is a matter of
history that President Living-ton urged the
alliance caucus to support tie raaa alluded
to in the charge, and he was elected. It is
singular to note that every movement of
the alliance is closely watched by certain
parties, perhaps explainable on the theory
that each guilty man fears an officer of the
law in every bush.
It is charged that some present were not
aliiancemen. The non- alliance reporter
did not know who were aliiancemen, and
reported in his ignorance men present who
were not there, and failed to name several
strong aliiancemen who were present.
Two of those pre*e it have been singled
out for special attack - viz., GoL R. E. Park
and Mr. George W. Harrison.
Col. D. G. Hughes, Hon. R. A. Nisbet and
others, representing a large body of the
farmers’ alliance of Bibb county, last year
requested CoL Park to allow the use of his
name in the democratic nomination for rep
resentative in that county. In declining
this honor, Col. Park said:
“I was the first accepted member of the
first sub-alliance formed in this county,
and have given to it mv unwavering and
loyal support. * * * The ten
deucy to convert, or I might sav, pervert
such a noble organization into an engine of
political power, and the self-seeking of as
pirants for political office, is, in my judg
ment, a sad disservice to the interests of the
state, and especially those of the
farming class,” Mr. George W. Harrison
is an alliance man, and has contributed in
dividually over S3OO to the alliance cause,
and he is not an office-seeker.
Tb o Southern Alliance Farmer had the
reputation of being the organ of the state
farmers’ alliance. It was supposed to have
given bond. When it was learned that the
proper custodian of the bond had never
seen it, aliiancemen began to wonder!
When Harry C. Brown, editor of the
alleged organ. In its columus charged that
President-Livingston had been using the
paper for h:s own personal ends that won
der was inoreased! When Harry C. Brown
iu private made charges effecting the moral
character of President Livingston the won
der reached its climax.
The question attracting the attention of
the aliiancemen iu conference at the execu
tive mansion was thisl Are the charges
made against Mr. Livingston by Harry C.
Brown true? If so, Mr. Livingston ought
not to remain in his position or In the order
one moment. If tbo charges are not true,
then Harry C. Brown should not have charge
of the organ cf the alliance. Remember
that no member of the conference had any
thing to do with making these charges.
Since the holding of that conference Mr.
Harrj- C. Brown in a published card admits
that there were differences between him
and President Livingston, but states that
those differences have been amicably ad
justed. Did the holding of the conference
have the effect of producing this settlement?
1 >: 1 they know too much on one another to
hazard a rupture?
As one of the charges made involved a
grave crime, and this adjustment is a con
donement on the part of Harry C Brown
OI -he offensbs committed against the order
and human society by President Ltving
