o mile a'.ove its confluence with the river.
A crowd soon aiseuibled, and when the
body was taken front the water it was soon
apparent that the unfortunate man bad
come to hie death by violeaoe. A brief ex
amination showed that hie skull had been
crushed in, and that he bad received a
frightful knife-stab under too right arm.
He had evidently been murdered and his
body thrown into the creek to conceal tho
crime. His general appearance indicated
that he was a Common tramp.

gentleman could raise his baud in defense
Mrs. Lagerquest struck him several times
with a cowhide, and after breakiug it at
tacked him with her lists. Mr. Giles as
soon as possible mounted his buggy and
drove away B3fely out of the dutches of his
assailant. The cause of this vigor.ius on
slaught is variously stated. Mr. Giles has
long been noted for his freedom in express
ing bis opinions on anything that attracted
Lis attention. As to the exact nature of the
remarks or observations made by Mr. Giles
on this occasion t er# exists a great diversity
of opinion. Mr. Gilo* was formerly a mem
ber of the board of Bibb county commis

did not want the other generator, whioh is
only fifty horse-power, to be overtaxed. The
passengers, as each car was approached,

obliged to walk home or wait for a pasting
hock. The rain was decending in torrents,

electric cars. The care were ordered in one

John Drink water of Albany had a thrill
ing experience with a highwayman at
Kincharoonee bridge, four miles from the
city, several nights ago. The bridge in
question is a covered one, and while crossing
it a negro suddenly sprang from the shadows
of a neighboring beam, and, catching the
rains of Mr. Drink water’s hone, called to
him to halt The burlv highwayman held a
olub in bis hand, but, nothing daunted, M:.
Drinkwnter got out his tobacco knife ana
ordered the would-be robber to unioosa his
reins. The order was not obeyed, where
upon Mr. Drinkwaler sprang from ;
his buggy and adsanoed cn !
tim highwayman, who aimed a tre- !
niendous blow at Driukwater, but inis<ed
him. this frightened the horse, which,
making a plunge, unloosed the grip of the
highway tuxn an the reius, aad striking him
with one of the buggy wheels, sent him
sprawling on the floor. As he fell Drink
water sprang upon him, and then ensued a
terrible struggle, in which the rubber's
clothing was ripped in many places by the
dull tobacco knile of the determined white
tnan. The negro finally, by an almost su
perhuman effort, threw his antagonist off
and escaped in the darkness. Sir. Drink
water pasted through the thrilling exper
ience without a scratch.

such things to bis face, and be worked him
self almost into one of his hysterical fits
while fuming over it Ho assured every
body yesterday who asked him about it that
he bad net the slightest fear of being dis
turbed by the officers of Dodge or Telfair

anything to be arrested for. “And tbe.i,”
continued Burch, “even if they do arrest
me, I’ve got a heap of friends down there
thatGi stick up to me through thick and
thin.”' hi spite of this s rt of talk, how
ever, i| wa* noticed that Burch made no
objection to the escort provided for him by
the federal authorities. Tbe main reason
for sending an officer down there with
Burch is said to be that threats have been
made against his life by the frieuds of tbe
