A DANGEROUS COUNTERFEIT.
Tba Treasury Department Discovers
a Bogua $2 BUI.
Washington, March 28.—A sentation
has been caused at the treasury department
by tbe discovery of a counterfeit $2 silver
certificate so nearly perfect in all ita
parts rs to be almost impossible of detection.
Heretofore all counterfeits of our paper
curreucy have been readily detect and by the
failure to imitate the distinctive character
of tbe p.,per on which tbe government notea
are printed, which is so arranged that each
par: of it forming a complete note contains
a small thread running through it length
wise.
A CLOSE IMITATION.
This paper is for the first time almost per
fectly imitated in tbe counterfeit just dis
covered. So far as is now Known it has
been used only in counterfeiting the two
d liar silver certificate of the series of 1886.
This note was designed under the supervis
ion of Treasurer Jordan, aod contains on
Its face a vignette of Gen. Han
cock. It is estimated that
there are now nearly $40,000,000
in these notes in circulation, and the prob
lem before the treasury department is how
to get them back into the treasury and to
substitute anew series without serious em
barrassment before any considerable quan
tity of the counterfeit notes get into circu
lation.
RESULT OF A CONFERENCE
This was the subject of a secret confer
ence at the treasury department this after
noon between Secretary Foster and leading
officials of the bureau of engraving and
printing. It was practically decided to
suspend the printing of $2-silver certificates,
and to institute anew series of anew
denomination. These will contain a
TigDette of Secretary Windom and will be
Issued as soon as the necessary plates can be
engraved. It will take about two months
to pit pa e the plates, and in tbe meantime
the government will exert its utmost en
deavors to secure and destroy the plates and
other paraphernalia used in the manufact
ure of tbe counterfeit.

that quantities of brandy have been sur

Three Tugs Trying to Get Her Out of

An effort is now being made to float the

but the sand thnt bas piled up around

Tbe lighthouse keeper at Gay Head reports
three lugs hauling on ber this morning.
The weather bas been extremely favorable

Fbsdebicksburg, Va„ March 28.
George W. Shep iard, who owns the ground
on which the tomb of Mary Washington,
mother of George Washington, is situated
gave to Colbert & Keely, real estate
brokers, an option on the property. The
brokers at once advertised the tomb for
sale at public sale at Washington. This
aroused indignation and Mr. Sheppard noti
fied the brokers that he could not give a
clean title to the ground. Thereupon they
withdrew their advertisement and insti
tuted suit for $2,000.

PROSPECTUS.
CHATHAM CONSOLIDATED LAND AND
IMPROVEMENT COMPANY.
The Chatham Consolidated Land and Im
provement Company Has o Cions on several
large tracts of land south of the city. After
allowing for streets and lanes their lots will
measure 6,000 feet, or twice the site of lots
usually offered in suburban property.
It is the intention of this corporation to give
to each subscriber a title to one lot for every
share he or she may subscribe to, in fee simple;
reserving an equal number as an investment to
be managed by the corporation for the mutual
benefit of each subscriber. So if a man takes 10
shares he will rec dvp 10 lots, in fee simple, and
the company will also retain 10 lots to be sold
for the benefit of subscribers.
The company is to begin the sale of the lots
held in common at once, and to try to pay yearly
or semi annual dividenda
These lota are most advantageously situated
south of the city, in the path of its growth, and
must become extremely valuable as soon as the
Vernon Park railway is built, which will be by
May 1,1891. Tnia company holding a large in
terest in said railway, the line will run directly
through all of their property, thereby greatly
adding to Its value. Every lot sold by the com
pany must enhance the value of the lots held in
fee by the subscribers, aud a large profit before
the last installment is paid is certain.
Every share gives you a lot which you can sell
or keep. Meanwhile the company is at work de
veloping an equal number of lots in which you
have a pro rata share.
Every lot sold by the oorapany increases the
value of the lota held by stockholders 100 to 200
percent.-
With low lands on the east and .west, the city
can only grow in one direction—toward the
south—and every foot of growth in that neces
sary direction adds to the value of these lots.
The great features about tills plan are;
1. Subscribers get possession of lots in fee
simple, which they oan manage outside of the
corporation.
2. Subscribers have an equal interest la all the
lots remaining in the company, as well as a
profit Interest in the railway.
3. The terms are SSO tier share, payable sl2 50
per share upon call after April 1, aud $1 per
share per month thereafter.
4. The lands are the best located and the
cheapest ever offered subscribers.

Hood’s
Sarsaparilla demonstrates its peculiar
merit in the scrofulous and impure blood
made rich and pure, in the relief it gives from

preparations last from ono to two weeks;
therefore Hood's Sarsaparilla combines
economy and strength.
