Tie Little villegra Keeping Face With
Its Enterprising Neighbors.
While Guyton, Pooler end the other 1
rJ burban town* along the line of the Cen
tal have come in for a good nhare of public :
attention in the way of noting their increase !
ia p ipulation and improvement*, but little,
if anything, has been said of quiet little
pioomingdale, station No. 1} j, near the line
of Chatham and Effingham.
Its people do not boast of any very sud
den increase of population, nor of being on
a boom, yet in a quiet way the little town
has been forging ahead and can now boast
of a steady growth, with corresponding mi
provemeots.
George H. Miller, who some two years
ago purchased the Meldrim property, laid
off a large portion of the land tributary to
the depot in lot* and disposed of them on
easy terms to all those who desired homes.
Many mechanics and laboring men who
work in Savannah located there.
8. W. Hester, an enterprising gentleman,
has'recently erected three very handsome
cottages, which he readily found tenants
for.
James Mordecai, connected with the cot
ton warehouse deportment of the Central,
has recently moved his house back on a
line with the new bouse* erected by Mr.
Hester, and otherwise gave hi* home a
thorough overhauling, with neat, new fenc
ing and other desirable and tasty changi s,
so making it one of the prettiest places in
the village.
C. H. Hebause, D. E. Waller and {Calvin
Moore are having material put on the
ground, and will at an early day begin the
erection of neat cottage houses.
Many of these people live at Blooming
dais and work in Savannah, and, sine* the
recent changes in the running of trains,
they are not so well provided for in reach
ing the city at an early hour as their neigh
bors at Po >lsr. It is apprehended by some
that, unless more favorable arrangements
are providod for their little town, is growth
will be retarded.
THE! CITY'S DRAINAGE.
Sanitary Inspector Desvergera Points
Out a Few Things.
Inspector Desvergers in his weekly report
to the Citizen 1 * Sanitary Association says
that the low lands on all sides of the city
are more or less submerged from the recent
rainfall, and it will be a fortunate circum
stance when the drainage commission la
organized and the people of Savannah
know who to hold responsible for unsani
tary conditions in the matter of drainage.
The inspector says that then, perhaps, the
people will know whether the railroad com
panies, who have created borrow-pits in and
immediately around the city, can be com
pelled to drain them; whether railroads, by
purchasing lands contiguous to the city
limits, can destroy or impair systems of
drainage established in behalf of the city’s
sanitation long anterior to the purchase,
and whether the city can allow its tenants
to pasture cattle o i lands purchased by the
city with a view to secure drainage and san
itary conditions, and thereoy defeat the
object of the purchase.
The people will know, too, whether it i3
expedient for the city to have two gangs of
laborers under dry culture supervisors reg
ularly employed to open and keep open
drains at a heavy expense to the city, and
gangs of cattle daily following behind these
laborers treading the ditcues in, and
whether brick manufacturing compauies
can make excavations on lands purchased by'
the city in the interests of sanitation and
afterward sold or leased to sucb companies
and then leave other excavations to become
sources of malaria until the city is forced to
employ the labor and sustain the expense of
of draining them.
It will also be learned whether the county
commissioners will meet with continued
discouragement in their work of draining
around the city or find in the commission
an organization which will co-operate with
thorn in their efforts to promote sanitary
conditions around the city.

A Growing Dry Goods Trade.
It is a pleasure to chronicle the advance
ment and prosperity of a business enterprise
where push and energy are the basis of their
endeavors, and in this instance it is a grati
fying fact that the dry goods house of Mor
rison, Foye & Go. has risen into promi
nence during the past three years.
Bv strict attention to all of the details of
a first-class dry goods establishment, the se
lection of the choicest fabrics and a well
trained and experienced corps of assistants
they have succeeded in building up a trade
that is gratifying to the proprietors and a re
ward for ti.eir earnest and persevering ef-
IO! ts.
store comprises three floors filled
with a well selected stock of staple and
fancy dry goods. A special feature of the
firm s stock is a fine line of black and col
ored dress goods and silks. Tbese lines com
prise all the leading novelties, and are
always kept in large varieties. Linwortb
Hosiery, of which they are the sole agents,
are constructed with reinforcements of
linen at the heel and toe, which results in a
Stocking of great prac: ical merit.
Morrison, Foye & Cos. keep a large stock
01 Eoods for the jobbing trade which con
sists of children’s clothing, muslin under
", ear . ladies’ blouse waists, jerseys, notions,
*'*• They have established quite a growiug
trade in this line. Au inspection of their
large stock of novelties is interesting to
tnose who appreciate excellent selections in
nrst-class goods.
A Big Factory.
From days beyond the ken of man
wheeled vebiclos for transportation have
been used. Wagons of a rude shape wero
used at the building of the tower of Babel.
Chariots we read of as early as Pharaoh,
ihe carriage, coach and wagon are indis
pensable agents for the convenience of man.
oavannah has a number of concerns de
voted to this moat useful of trades. Some,
however, from longer experience, better
training while acquiring the mastership of
the trade, and Datura! aptitude, coupled
with industry and enterprise, take prece
dence of their competitors. Amopg this
class is recognized the establishment of D.
A. Altick’a Hons, successors to D. A. Altiek
Boos, who established their business in
this city many yt ars ago, and have, by dili
gent and careful attention to their trade,
built up a business of enormous propor
tions. Their main factory is iu Lancaster,
Ba., where their predecessors have been in
business for forty-three years. The work
!*of the very beet description, symmetrical
,n Build, strong, durable, carefully and
completely ironed and painted.
B. A. Altick’s Sons have on exhibition an
e ‘ ? gant line of carriages, buggies, surreys,
toad carte, phaetons and wagons. They
have introduced this season the “Climax' 1
cable buckbnard, which is a marvel in cop
•truction and convenience, being three com
fortable vehicles iu one. It will beoome de
servedly popular.
A peculiar fact with refer
ence to Dr. Pierce’s Golden
Medical Discovery is, that,
unlike sarsaparillas and
other blood medicines,which
are said to be good for the
blood in March, April and
May, the “ Discovery ” works
equally well all the year
round , and in all cases of
blood-taints or humors, no
matter what their name or
nature.
It’s the cheapest blood
purifier sold through drug
gists.
Why? Because it’s sold
on a peculiar plan, and you ,
only pay for the good you
get. Can you ask more?
“ Golden Medical Discov
ery ” is a concentrated vege
table extract, put up in large
bottles; contains no alcohol
to inebriate, no syrup or
sugar to derange digestion;
is pleasant to the taste, and
equally good for adults or
children.
The “ Discovery ” cures all
Skin, Scalp and Scrofulous
affections, as Eczema, Tet
ter, Salt-rheum, Fever-sores,
White Swellings, Hip-joint
disease and kindred ail
ments.
